What would you like?

No, we are not going to have a name calling forum but we may have to implement Saturday classes on sharing and consideration of others. If you can't make it, you can substitute an hour of Barney. image

Seriously, what do you all want on this board?
With all of the posts made here it's impossible to read them all.
I do look at as many as possible and the one pointed out by concerned members.
After reading the thread I try to decide where the best home for the topic is. Sometimes it is the open forum, sometimes it is the trash and other times it stays here.

Keep in mind, many of the people in this forum do not go to the open forum nor do they ever want to.

I have had complaints that Clankeye's Monday stories are not coin related and should be moved. Personally, I think the best home for these threads are here in the coin forum since they deal with the characters found in this forum.
Where should a thread about a new Paypal policy reside? Many of the people on the coin forum use Paypal so I feel it's home is here.
Is it one of your birthdays? Why can't we have that thread here?

So many have complained of a perceived censorship lately but at the same time want us to lock this board down on such a straight and narrow path that no deviation is tolerable. You can't have your cake and eat it too (whatever that means...how can you eat it if you don't all ready have it?) Keep in mind that one person's treasure is another person's trash so if there is going to be leeway it has to be for everyone, not just for what you think is appropriate.

Here is your chance, what do you want?

Carol

    Carol,

If I don't like a post, I just ignore it. If a particular poster continues to post material which does not interest me, I ignore the particular user.

You can't possibly please all people all of the time, so I wouldn't try to do so. People here are sort of a family. If someone wants to post about a birth in the family, a birthday or something significant which is happenning in his or her life, fine (as long as it doesn't seem to be a regular occurrence).

The only place where I would draw the line is if someone is being verbally abusive toward someone else, or else using unacceptable / bigoted language on these boards. Some people like to complain all of the time (I have some family members like that). I try and ignore them, and suggest the rest of us do the same in this particular situation.
    "Vou invadir o Nordeste,
    "Seu cabra da peste,
    "Sou Mangueira......."
  • I miss your stories so I hope they will return someday Clankeye.

Russ, more than one has commented that the post doesn't belong.

This is where it gets tricky, people have different views and you all need to be able compromise.

    Thanks Carol.

Personally, I want Clankeye's stories to remain here. After all, they are about forum topics/members.

I would insist, however, that he be required to post one every week. Being that I am a very flexible (coin)guy, I would not require that it be on any particular day of the week.

On any other matters, I'll go with the majority.

I must get ready for the St. Louis show, so I will end this for now. I will, no doubt, have much more to say on this matter at a later date. Thanks again.

From what I've seen on the 'net, the best boards are self-policing.

A good board only needs a few ground rules. The only time I would interfere is if one poster attacks another and tries to hijack the forum. Or if a poster is too limited in their vocabularly to only using 4-letter words. That's it. Leave it alone and the majority posters will do the necessary weeding.

  • ccrdragonccrdragon Posts: 2,697
Ditto what Elcon said earlier - if I don't like the post or what someone has said, I simply ignore the post.
Same goes for the abusive posters.

The only thing that gets me are the spam posters (and you are doing a great job of keeping that nonsense under control!)

Good to see you read my post about the name calling forum. It was really meant for people to think about what they write on the forum and the negativety it creates. I agree we don't have to read certain posts but what about the people who don't post and lurk on the way we talk to each other.

Things I would like to see:

    1. a permanent sticky post on the top of EVERY forum from you (carol) of the rules of that forum. It could be a condensed version with brief descriptions of the rules. example: no name calling, be nice, respect other viewpoints etc.

    2. larger size of attachments

  • I think it should be as it has been. Moved posts when they are totally out of line or not coin related, but the semi coin related ones like the paypal post would be fine in here since we use it everyday.

If I don't like a post, I simply ignore it. Posts about Paypal/eBay are very pertinent to this board and I would like them to stay that way. Within reason, everything that is coin related and not a category for the other forums should be here. I personally have not complained about any thread. Some are corney, but I still read them. I like to read most threads, even if I don't respond to them. Censorship is generally bad for those folks of coin buying age.

US Coin forum: Anything to do with US coins, Mrs. Coinboard, or any of the
users of the US coin board. Topics which don't interest me I will not open.
There should be no buying or selling. It would be nice if thread titles were
more descriptive, but this is determined by the author since there is plenty
    of room.

Registry forum: Anything to do with registry coins including buying and selling.

World and Ancient: Anything to do with world coins.

Open forum: Anything. (but after 1,000 posts the threads should be moved to
    the testing forum)

General collectibles: All collectibles but especially tokens, medals, and exonumia.
Until it gets going well buying and selling might be permitted.

It would be nice to have some of the rules delineated, because it's been impossible
to achieve concensus. Off topic threads and posts are occasionally distracting but
rarely much of a problem on most forums.

I don't think any changes are needed.

What amazes me is that when a thread starts to become a "name-calling" thread there are over 100 replies.

That's what keeps the thread alive, everyone feeling like they have to respond to name-calling or just plain stupid threads.

Ignore them and don't respond and the thread will go away all by itself.

    Joe.

  • Name calling isn't going to stop until people can find a shred of consideration for others. Sad but true.
I don't believe we have a size requirement for a single attachment in a thread but please use some consideration or I may contact you about resizing it. If you are referring to the limit on attachments in your signature line they will not be enlarged anytime soon, I personally would like to see them reduced a little more but I'm willing to compromise on that issue.

In the last few weeks here are a few of the complaints I've gotten.

"What do you think of this auction?"
    "Is this A/T?"
    "My results are in"
"Did this person cheat me?/This person cheated me!"

Elcontador rules!! Great point! image Carol, this is a forum which is frequented by adults (sometimes) they should be able to handle themselves here with a bit more maturity (hopefully). You have better things to do than "babysit". image

Russ; Can I get some Barney targets from you?!! I would love to take my Sten MkII and riddle the purple menace!! image

Clankeye, please don't move your posts, they are different and thought provoking and entertaining. But most of all they are coin related.
In any public forum or gathering there will be the people who just don't get along well or go out of their way to spoil things for the majority to those, I just ignore your babbleimage and go on my way reading and occasionally posting.
"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, I won't be laid a hand on; I don't do these things to other people, I require the same from them."

And when those that complained see a thread with any of those titles, DON'T READ THEM.

Plain and simple. But just because someone doesn't like a topic does not mean that someone else is not interested in reading it.

All topics are not going to be for everyone. If that was the criteria there would be few threads indeed.

I agree with Elcontador 100%....even though he did try to rip me off recently (joking!)

Except for those extreme examples he mentions (which would be obvious, no-brainers to Carol), let us self-govern with our clickers. But those Saturday classes on sharing are a great idea, can we bring snacks?
  • ccrdragonccrdragon Posts: 2,697
To respond to your post, Carol:

A/T - will always generate a lot of heat because it is a very controversial topic (and just like the saying, everybody has an opinion on the subject). This one at least is ALWAYS coin related - though it does have a tendency to devolve into name calling.

The auction threads - I only read far enough to see the auction and then go make up my own mind about it

Results - I think people should post more results here since it gives all of us a chance to look and learn about grading

The cheat/flame/etc threads - unfortunately, not everyone on this forum is mature enough to handle this type of discusion thru PM's, emails, etc. Since that is the case, I almost always ignore these threads and don't get caught up in the BS associated with them.

I still go back to what Elcontador said - read the threads that you want to read and get involved in the threads that you want to get involved in.

Bottom line - it is not Carol's job to play nanny to the people on this forum, nor is it her job to make this forum conform to ANY standard other than that which PCGS has set forward. If you don't likes them apples or want the forum run a different way, either talk Carol out of her job and do it yourself, or go create a forum that is run by your rules, your morality and your standards. Either way, get a life and spend your energy on something that is tuly important (like collecting coins or saving the world) - quit wasting our time being a cry-baby!

Whew! Sorry, just had to vent there...

    Carol,
Personal accounts on postal inurance claims have been a life saver for me. Learning what people think is asking too much for s/h/i on eBay has been helpful for me. These and other topics in the U.S. Coin Forum don't directly relate to PCGS, U.S. coins, but I would hate to not have that info. available to me. While I don't appreciate "flame" throwing threads, I also understand that I don't have to read them and so I can simply, self censor. I do that with the TV, internet, library, etc. You're offering a free service and for that I'm at your mercy. I feel that you're doing a good job at censoring inappropriate comments and posters and that is your prerogative. Thanks for making the forum available to people like me who enjoy expanding their numsimatic knowledge. Keep it up! image

What's this about Clank's stories? I finally get a cameo appearance and poof! they're gone? By the Gods!

This forum is a great collection of coin and semi-coin related stories. This can't be a just a coin only forum. The members have many dimensions that are all inter-related. Jobs, family, finances all play a role in our collecting interest.

None of the threads apply to all of us, but many are of interest. Coin collecting is a hobby driven by passion. Passion can lead to disagreements. Like many others, I read the ones I find of interest and pass on the ones that don't. Isn't that why Baskins Robbins has 31 flavors?

I agree, the types of threads I posted earlier do belong here. (with the exception of flame posts) but people do complain so I'm trying to get a handle on if there are posts that the majority can agree on don't belong. (beside the obvious)

I like the sticky note idea.

    Some issues i'd like included

    1. Thread title should describe the thread somewhat.. not titles that are incomplete sentences like "Well doesn't this make you mad.." where you are forced to open it to see if it's coin related when someone could have said "Well doesn't ACG make you mad"(for example)
this would include B/S/T posts that are just redirections like HALF DIMES FOR SALE!!! then you click inside it and see <EBAY AUCTIONS>.. i already cruise the ebay auctions so I already saw it. just put EBAY in the title!

No complaints here with the exception that Clankeye's stories are not on time.

I do ignore many threads but I am not going to whine about the content or whine that 100% of the content is not acceptable to me.

  • mrdq, I agree completely with the titles so how do you propose we enforce something like that?
Keep in mind that for moderation you basically have me. I'm on mainly Monday - Friday normal work hours no holidays and I'll be traveling to shows for one week out of the month for the next 3-4 months. I'll be away for 2 weeks in July.
I do pop in on some weekends and holidays and I try to pop in while I'm at shows but it's not much.
I'm all for suggestions but keep in mind who you are stuck with to enforce them.

<< <i>a permanent sticky post on the top of EVERY forum from you (carol) of the rules of that forum. It could be a condensed version with brief descriptions of the rules. example: no name calling, be nice, respect other viewpoints etc >>

This suggestion is, I think, the first thing that this board needs. At least until it's understood. One other board I participate in often has a very visible link to the terms of service available on every page. They also have a few volunteer hosts who will help monitor what is going on and are known to be fair and of good judgment.

I sincerely cannot believe people would complain about Clankeye's Mrs. Coinboard posts. That annoys me greatly. His sense of humor has been one additional thing that has made this forum fun and not simply a never ending insult fest.

Personally, I do not worry about the somewhat off-topic posts or even tangential posts. But what I do find annoying are the personal attacks and the "THIS PERSON CHEATED ME" threads. If the administrators controlled those two types of threads (by locking the thread), then over time the people who create perpetuate them will stop and join in the various bashing threads constantly perpetuated on the NGC boards.

    Neil
  • Carol,

I like most of the things that have been said already... This is such a tough one - we are an incredibly diverse group.

However, for me the only threads I think that should stay out of this forum are
    a) the attacks (especially when things have not been worked out through more appropriate channels)
    b) the hurtful posts
    c) the immature flames
There are a few times when a mature flame is appropriate, as long as it isn't a) or b), like "I hate it when I dropped my favorite Barber coin on the floor!" or "I really wish eBay wouldn't add subcategories without my permission."
  • DCAMFranklinDCAMFranklin Posts: 2,862 ✭✭
Carol- I can't imagine this Forum without Clank's Mrs. Coinboard threads. Please continue to allow them to stay here!!! Anyone that sees Clank as the author and Coinboard, kingdom, castle theme to the subject, should simply pass it by.

Insightful information about PayPal should remain here as so many use it in their auctions. Though that is beginning to dwindle.

I agree the A/T thing has been beat beyond death. It just seems to go on and on.

PLEASE DO restrict the size of pictures attached to the signature line. In fact, do away with those attachments all together! They take up a ridiculous amount of space and are simply clutter.

I have really enjoyed Andy's (Mr.Eureka), recent threads about the Guy/Mark/Doc situation. They have created a lot of insightful thought and meaningful contributions. Members contributing to those threads were always able to offer their opinions and even disagree without attacking anyone. Quality discussions!

Differing opinions are OK. Attacking Members that disagree is not. I think you can help my requiring more courtesy and consideration. The personal attacks need to disappear.

Neil, constantly bashing threads on NGC? Would you kindly point those out to me? One of the main reasons I spend more time there is that the boards are more moderated and the quality of the posts are generally of a higher nature. You subtract out the flame threads here, the ebay threads, etc., the number of quality threads are about the same.
  • P.S.

I realize future posts are up to Clankeye, but if he wants to write again, I'd love to see his work here (no pressure - I'm grateful for what we've already had). It is related to the members of the board and their week "together." They are works of art and genius, and they get people to think about the humanity of what we do and how we interact.
  • I have no intention of moving clankeye's stories. I believe this is the correct forum for these.
I also agree that there are many informative posts that are not technically about coins.

Good question, Carol. When does it step over the line from protection to slander or libel? I don't know. The good news is that many of the members will almost always jump in and help things moderate themselves out.
Several "you done me wrong" threads have actually resolved out to be OK for everyone involved.
  • What Cladking said.

Essentially, I think things go relatively smoothly as they currently are. There don't seem to be all that many OT threads (unless they're gettin' yanked before I see them) and occasional digression is not particularly annoying or unwelcome. IMHO
That humanity at large will ever be able to dispense with artificial paradises seems unlikely. Most men and women lead lives at the worst so painful, and at the best so monotonous, poor, and limited, that the urge to escape, the longing to transcend themselves, if only for a few moments, is and always has been one of the principal appetites of the soul.

I think you have done an outstanding job. But so have the forum people here.

I for one appreciate when some one is trying to take advantage of our hobby, typically in an Ebay auction, that the forum members
get right on their case. We all learn something through this action.

The other bright star of our forum was the donations to airplanenut. It was wonderful and something many should be proud of.

I do appreciate you keeping transparent threads that only want us to view their auction and buy their coins. I always feel like I'm

On a more serious ( or realistic ) post to the last one, there was talk of a seperate forums for Copper/Nickel/Silver/Gold coinage. I don`t know if there is a want or need for that now or not. It`s one suggestion.

Maybe a special occasions forums. Like for birthdays, wedding anouncements, a new addition to the family, or a loss in the family. It`s probably a corny idea but I`ll throw it out.

There are complaints about different threads here and I'm trying to see if there is a majority in agreement.

I'm not new to these forums so from your past experience you know I have not moved the posts I've questioned here.
