Battle of the Old Holders

PCGS, NGC, and ANACS each have their old holders that are beloved by numismatists. But I want to know what you guys think!

My vote probably comes as a big surprise, although technically not a holder.
The Photograde holders are honestly really unique so its totally understandable, I just wish they were so much cheaper so I could afford one!

From a holder only standpoint, I'm going to say I have a great love for the old NGC Fatties.
PCGS OGH/Doily's are also there.
Not sure which is 1A and which is 1B.
All selected are very cool. I'll have to wait and try to remember to vote later.

I really like the 2 part PCGS slabs and the green fatty NGC holders.

Gold embossed NGC fatty
The anacs photo grade would be a close 2nd
The old rattlers are kind of cool, mostly because I actually remember when they came out.
However, I don't care about any of the older holders. The current PCGS holders are far superior.
True, although I feel like some of the older holders look kinda cool

NGC fatty holders are really nice
They're bland in terms of holders, considering both modern and old, but they have a look to them that the modern holders just couldn't possibly replicate!

I love the toning found in old fatty holders. The thick profile adds character

Fatties, but man they do easily scratch, my OCD kicks in with scratched holders.

OGHs a close second.
These are just about perfect

ANACS Gen 1. Sometimes original is best!

I love my one and only Regency holder…but the rattlers are nice too!
Best by far is the first-generation black NGC slab.

Regency holders are really cool! Just wish they weren’t so rare…

That 20 center is sickkkkk
I have many of the OGH’s, as that’s when I first seriously started collecting certified coins. They look and feel pleasing. As a side note, I also like the sturdiness and feel of the gold shield holders.
OGH 3.0 is my favorite generation. It's one piece, so less bulky than the doily/2.1/2.2, but still has the old school font style.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.
NGC fatty was my first love. I still love it but the Ogh and rattler have gained a strangle hold on the second place spot.
All the holders on the list are great.
The NGC fatty is honestly one of the coolest looking holders! I feel like the coin inside is always complimented by the simplicity of the NGC Fatty.

I like and appreciate the rattlers, fatties, and ANACS soap boxes, but I love the OGHs, especially with gold coins in them.
Pretty surprised by how poorly rattlers polled. Just 6% of the vote at the time of this comment.
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
I thought I had voted, but perhaps not.
Overall, my favorite single generation holder would likely be the NGC 3.0 with heat stamp logo on the reverse. I'm not choosing an exotic or overly rare generation holder, or one that has an enormous premium built into it. I like the early NGC fatty holders because they stack well, they feel heavier to hold, they have edges that have good grip on them, the lack of a hologram on the reverse means that is one less thing to get destroyed and their plastic appears to be very optically clear. I also think they look pretty nice.
The coin below has nothing wrong with its holder, I just edited the cert number out of the image.

How much cheaper do you want?
I haven't looked in more than a handful of years, but, from memory of then, they weren't highly priced...for most of the "common coin" ones
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
I hadn't voted yet either ... but honestly, when it comes to the older holders, for many of the same reasons @TomB just stated, I think it's still the Fatty.
Not the greatest image, but a really nice collector coin that I've owned since September of 1994. Obviously, the sticker came MUCH later.

Nice coin, @pursuitofliberty but they printed the cert number oddly!

Anything under $100 seems decent to me in that front.. too bad they’re like $250 minimum

Here’s what seems to be very popular today. Green on green aka OGH/CAC. I thought I overpaid for this, but when I see what they’re selling for, now, I think I did well.
Tonight’s Heritage auction left me with my jaw hanging down. Couldn’t believe some of the prices for the combo. Had a single lot that I planned to bid on and it reached 15% over my outer limit maximum during Internet pre-bidding, before the live bidding even started. I’ve never had that happen!! During the live auction, it went even higher!!
Sooo glad that I finished my Walker set over four years ago, as I simply can’t imagine trying to compete in today’s climate.
My OGH/CAC
The NGC 3.0. Some of my favorite holders.

Great coins @Walkerfan.
Would you be comfortable sharing what coin went so high on the HA auction tonight? Since you didn't win it, it seems like it might be harmless to share. At least we could look it up.

OK, I suppose that I don’t mind. It would be bad form to leave you hanging and wondering. 😉
10 or 12 years ago this was a $550-$650 coin. And yes, even with the OGH and the bean.

I was tracking that coin, too!
I did not bid on it, either, and yes it did go for a lot of money.

I look daily on various auction sites. I could probably put together a date set of Morgans pretty quickly.
Thank you sir! High praise considering the source!

This doily did really well. If it’s sent to the bean factory, the owner could probably get double for it, assuming it passes.

There's something really vintage about the make up of an ANACS photograde setup. Peace Roy

For purely the aesthetics of the holder, I think this OGH is my favorite, the later one, from 1993 to 1998
Especially with Coins midsized in them…
Next favorite, for looks would be the doily, and I’m also a big fan of the NGC fatty’s as well…
Truly, I love all old holders!

I love those ANACS Soapboxes. They feel so nice and the small size really highlights the coin.
I've always loved miniatures too, and it's the closest thing to a miniature in the world of encapsulated/graded coins.

May as well post all of my examples of the slabs from the post. I mean, why not! (I sadly don’t have any ANACS Photogrades)

My one and olnly ANA slab.

Not sure I understand the question in the OP. I would vote "none of the above" if a favorite is the question.
It’s nice many of them have held up well over that long period of time (vs the atmosphere, etc.).
Thank you! 😎
