You might as well talk to a brick. They have their business model, and it's working for them. Their standard response to pointing out a counterfeit to them is, "This item is consistent with our policies." That says it all.

Someone just posted this thing, which is in a bogus PCGS holder on another site. I'm sure that it conforms to eBay listing policies. You know you are off to a bad start when it says "Morgan" on the slab label.

It seems to have become acceptable to list any holder company as certified coins now. NNC SEGS NMI and all the other off brands are listed in abundance now.

What is the potential of them eventually ending up in a lawsuit (even class action) for allowing counterfeits to KNOWINGLY be sold on their venue?

@MsMorrisine (and all), I was amused by that ad... and grateful that I don't see too many of them. I'll share the secret: ad blockers. (Which a lot of you probably know - but here's how to level up). There's a great ad blocker called uBlock Origin. I originally installed it in my Chrome browser as it was one of the few (the only?) one that blocks annoying YouTube ads. A few months back, Chrome changed its architecture and made it infeasible for uBlock Origin to function. They created a "lite" version but it wasn't as good.

So I downloaded the latest Firefox browser and changed my default browser to Firefox, and promptly installed uBlock Origin. (It asks a few questions at first, which I just take the default on). It blocks TONS of garbage. This reduces your access to hot pictures of Mary Ann and Ginger, of course. But blocking the garbage minimizes frustration and reduces bandwidth/loading time. It's a great tool.

Disclosures: I have no stake in uBlock Origin (or Firefox) but I would recommend them to any friend. (In fact, I installed this combo on my 91-year-old neighbor's PC, even though it meant she had to learn something new, which she tells me is uncomfortable for her). I also am a Windows PC user and I don't know if this solution is available on Apple or mobile phones.

I have learned everything I know about motorcycle mechanics from YouTube and my buddy Ed. If I had to listen to either of them ask me, "tired of occasional irregularity?" I wouldn't like it.

Yep. And translated, it means something like.... ' Hey, it makes money for us!! Thanks for your concern... but we con't care! '

I ended up getting some garden tools with it; thanks eBay. B)

We had mixed feelings about attending, much less setting up at the OKC ANA. Talked with many others who were hesitating.

OKC and vicinity a “ coin town “ ? Oklahoma and its surrounding area a hub for tornadoes with US weather increasingly unpredictable and devastating in its intensity at ANY time of the year. Direct non-stop flights to OKC few and far between and expensive. Examining the online ANA bourse floor map, as of 2 weeks ago there were quite a few unassigned tables, and up front too.

But, as so many also said, it IS the ANA. So in the end we decided to attend. Hoping for the best.

But, as I previously said, global warming and erratic high intensity destructive weather will increasingly impact the venue choice and frequency of coin and collectable shows.

I am from Oklahoma so I am unashamedly biased in favor of this show being held in OKC. With that said, I am also realistic enough to admit that OKC does have it's limitations/drawbacks. However, don't let the fear of severe weather prevent you from attending the ANA in OKC. Most parts of the country have their own unique severe weather issues, whether that be tornados, earthquakes, wildfires, hurricanes, etc. Additionally, while tornados can happen any time, late August is not typically severe weather season in Oklahoma, not to mention that the data suggests "tornado alley" is actually shifting eastward.

I thought that too. When I used to try to sell a SEGS coin as uncertified it would still get taken down. Now it appears acceptable even in a title.

it appears selling counterfeits is acceptable too.

i've reported a few "obvious violations of replica" policy. coins with "copy" on them(not allowed) and "gold coin!!" but the description says plated but not the coin- the coin has 1oz .999, etc

reports denied! i think i only had 1 success.

I'd love to talk to them about counterfeits and why ai is determining there is no violation when text and pictures are provided

I'd ask them why can't places like pcgs and cac and more can't report, directly to ebay, counterfeits of their items

why i've reported coins with copy on them and others listed as gold eagles where the description says "plated" and my report is rejected

    etc

Is the easy solution charging for listings? Maybe refund the charge if the item sells?

I'd rather see ACEF's table next to that wretched hive of scum and villainy. For those that do engage, be sure the bot hears "eBay" and "causing harm" in the same sentence with regard to their handling of fakes.

  • MsMorrisineMsMorrisine Posts: 35,745 ✭✭✭✭✭

and they need a special report entry for plated coins and other counterfeit bullion.

also, i wouldn't just call them replicas, i'd use counterfeit too, maybe replica is broader? how about "counterfeit holders, stickers and labels?

The ANA also officially announced a collaboration with eBay, the online auction venue, to combat numismatic fraud. This effort resulted in a “code of conduct” for those selling numismatic items on eBay and the formation of the Coin Community Watch Group. (This was not particularly effective, and many fake coins, tokens and medals continued to be sold on the Internet, as they are today in 2016.)

I was among a group of numismatists who worked with Judith to combat fraud on eBay. She was obviously very dedicated and great to work with. I think things started going downhill as soon as her position was terminated.

Also need a way to report raw coins listed as being certified. I hate that crap crapping up my search results. Like with fakes, when those get reported ebay AI comes back and says it's fine.

Reports rarely accomplish anything these days. However, there has been (and still is) a way to report the practice you described. The practice of including the names of grading companies in listings of ungraded coins falls under the violation of “Keyword Spamming”, which is an option in reporting.
