1812 CBH - a new arrival GtG, and a neat Die Marriage - Grade shown in post #21
![pursuitofliberty](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/authoricons/29 10c Raw.jpg)
I had owned an example of this Die Marriage for a couple of years, but really wasn't happy with the piece I had (it had some issues on the reverse), and so I decided to sell it last summer. For some CBH enthusiasts this is a cardinal sin ... "do not sell a good Die Marriage before you find a suitable replacement" ... but since I doubt I have the means to make a run past a specific point anyway, sometimes that logic doesn't seem to fit for me. I did okay on the sale, and hoped another I would like better would find me someday.
.
About two weeks ago now, I saw this coin on a dealers site I frequent but have done very little business with. It jumped out at me immediately. I waited a couple of days, considering her more carefully, and then wrote them. For reference, I'm not exactly sure why I haven't dealt with them much, as they always have nice coins and are a friendly and easy to deal with bunch. However, my records show this is only the second CBH I have purchased from them. Anyway, by the time we agreed, I sent a check and they shipped, it took a little bit to arrive, and I haven't had time to put her up until now.
.
The world of CBH's, especially early issues from the teens, are fraught with wonderful anomalies such as overdates, re-punching's, cracks, chips and clashes. Fascinating stuff, especially if you're into those things.
If you've seen me post, you know I'm really, really into those things!
.
Die lines and lumps? Damage from a different punch? I'm not sure there has ever been a conclusive definition on this one, but the areas around the right wing on the reverse are fascinating to look at and ponder. Evidence of some of the mysteries at the early mint.
.
So, this is my NEWP
The Overton should be easy for anyone with the references and a quick dive.
The grade we'll leave for a guess, and of course, since we have beans and stickers and other such ornaments, you can guess if it has one, or you think it might deserve one.
It's all good. I just love the coin!

I'd say 58, beaned for sure........
(edited from '55 after a few more looks.....)
Best, SH
Ooh!!
That's a great one!
I too have let this marriage go and would be excited to find another one...
Looks more 55 than 53 but I'll take 53 since it's only a guess after all
(Your gtg's are alot trickier than when @lkeigwin used to do them frequently 😂)
Nice one, Todd. 55?
Most seem to want the later state with the reverse die damage, but I prefer the prime state.
I'd say AU58+ for her - obverse looks to be MS to me with a touch of rub on the reverse.

Looks "good" to me.![;) ;)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

55 CAC. Cool to see those die made marks!![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)

I am at 55. Nice surfaces Todd!

Wow, it really looks like something fell into the dies and caused damage as they were being used. I am in the 58 camp for this one.
I'm going to say 62 because I think the reverse is a weak strike and not rub.

I’m all in at AU58. Nice coin!
@BustDMs That's great Brad ... "Picket Fence", I like it!!
@jayPem That's probably because he takes WAY better images than I do! Plus, for a long time, I think he only bought two grades!!![;) ;)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)

When I reveal the grade later, I'll try to remember to share some of his text exchange with me on this one.
@OKbustchaser Lovely example of the 109 prime.

I'll go with AU-58. Nice coin.
Not a GTG type but like the look with the slight color. Interesting 'stuff ' on the reverse as noted.

Another great coin, Todd. You’ve taken a big leap forward this year.
BHNC #248 … 130 and counting.
I'm going with 58, and a nice one at that!
Beauty, I also feel a 58. And love the die line off the Eagle's wing. Congrats on your find.

See slight wear on head, beak and left wing tip. You really need to see a really nice AU coin in person to see if you are dealing with a strike issue or a luster break.

I'll guess 55 with a bean, looks great!
Think I’m going to hedge my bet on this one.😂
AU53-55.
Beautiful coin, Todd.
Okay, now that @HillbillyCollector guessed, I guess I can post the grade.![:D :D](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/lol.png)

Thanks for all the comments!

First of all, back to my earlier comment directed towards @jayPem
After I bought it, but before I got it, I sent Lance the images from the seller (below), told him the grade, the bean status, etc.
He said "Yum! I like very much!" Then asked, "58?"
Thinking he might have missed it, I said, "No, 55."
He responded a few minutes later, "No, 58."
@spacehayduke You had it, nailed it, right off the bat!! And THEN you changed your mind!!!![:D :D](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/lol.png)

If I saw the seller's photos I would have said 58! A bit more luster than I thought. Beautiful 109a.

Love this die marriage and this one is a really nice 58 showing the variety well.![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Gosh remember like it was yesterday discussing this 15 years ago if it was a dropped screw
I went and looked at images for my 55's and 58's I used to own. I redecided to upgrade it to 58 bc of how the hair looked, but mebbe not as much luster for a 58?
Best, SH
First impressions from first set of photos was 55 CAC. Seeing the new photos, I could see it AU-58 in a new slab. Stunning example of the very interesting O-109a marriage.
I take the side of @OKbustchaser. I am a fan of primes and crisp detail across the series. This die damage is just too interesting to ignore! I plan to handle a few high grade examples with some extra time to come up with theories myself one of these days.

Nice, Todd. I still like it very much.
I favor the later die states over the primes. I love blunders, die failure, etc. But my 1812 O.109 is an early one. I was sold on the hammered strike.
Lance.
Super hammered 👍
