The piece has what has been called "envelope or cabinet friction."
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I am just starting out with this series and thinking of collecting CBH's. I will go with AU58 on this one but as others have said it could be MS62. I have a lot of research to do.
As many have said it's either a 58 or a 62 ... neither would surprise me ... and in many cases for coins like what this one appears to be, neither is necessarily wrong
Nice eye appeal IMO as well

55 or 58. There seems to be clear wear on the bust, cap, and the facing wing. Still has a lot of nice luster so I'll put it at 58, too much wear for an MS holder though.

Exactly, well said, I'm at 58 too.
(I would have gone 55, but giving it extra merit for the great EA)
The uneven toning on the obverse is suspect. You need to see this coin. If you really want to buy an Unc. in this series, it needs to be MS 63 or better. Due to these coins not being minted on the steam press, Uncs are often not fully struck and you need to know the variety to see if this is an issue.
Also, coins with "cabinet friction" ie., wear on their high points, sometimes get a pass if they have nice appeal in the MS 58 - 63 range. Lastly, NGC has traditionally been 1/2 to 3/4 point looser in MS 65. Don't know re MS 63, but I imagine this sort of thing applies in MS 63 to some degree, as well.

We'll it is an ngc ms63... But your point about a little cabinet friction may be what many of us saw as potential wear. It can be hard to distinguish the two in hand, nevermind by photo.
I guessed without cheating and I came up with 62. There's nothing AU about this coin. I can see PCGS being cranky about the weak scroll on the reverse.

My WAG is AU55, even though I don't collect the series and there are missing letters in PLURIBUS.
Au 58 ez
Edit: But my guess is AU 62
And to the OP and DennisH : I enjoy and agree with your sig lines, immensely.

MS 62
I’d grade it 58 but wouldn’t be at all surprised if it’s in an unc. grade holder.

AU58 and pretty.
AU-58, but I image that it's in an MS-62 holder.

I would think 58. Looks like light friction but could be a soft strike.
I thought as high as MS-63.
AU 58
First thought was 58 but in an NGC 62.

Your hobby is supposed to be your therapy, not the reason you need it.
Not surprised... Sometimes areas that look like wear aren't in hand. Coin photography is tough.
