Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
My avatar, which I have posted before, but my photography skills have improved greatly. I purchased it in 1971 (when I was a mere child ) for the astounding sum of $95 at a time when most of my coin purchases were under $25. When I saw it in the dealer's case, I HAD to have it! It was in my first grading submission to PCGS in 1988.

Fishing on eBay for choice original coins tonight. The catch:
This "original" coin turned out to be another cleaned coin where the seller deliberately hid the extensive hairlining on both sides.
I'm glad the other coin "got away" because that one was probably cleaned as well.
Lately, coin collecting has really sucked for me. Much of it has been my fault but every purchase I've made lately has been poor to horrible, despite the TPG grades and green stickers awarded to these coins.

Of course eBay is a crapshoot yet on balance you’ve come out ahead, right?

Bought this Trade Dollar from Monarch Coin in Salt Lake City. Paid $370.00 for it. Definitely a gamble to buy a Trade dollar raw. This one paid off. Graded as AU58.

Bought this Seated Half Dollar from Monarch same day. Graded as cleaned. This gamble did not pay off, but it is still a gorgeous coin even if the PCGS graders got it all wrong.

I can return a coin on eBay, so that's not much of a problem. EBay has become tougher to find nice raw coins though. Lots of sellers hiding their coins' problems these days means lots of returns. Overall, I've done OK. Anyone who has been collecting seated halves the past 17 years or so has done at least OK, financially speaking.
What's gotten to me is all the coins that I was so excited to win that I posted seller's photos here before receiving the coin, only to have them turn out to be cleaned, horrible coins. This quarter is another in a string of disappointing purchases off eBay. This reminds me of the frustrations I had collecting midgrade Barber halves raw off eBay.
The one coin that I've liked was a VG8 1876-CC WB2 Large CC that has a nice circ cameo look to it. It's nicer in hand than in the photos below.
A few newps. The 1831 was a staple scratch and a weak motto from a + designation or a grade bump. Looks amazing in hand. Especially the reverse. It glows pink!
Here are some coins (mostly copper) that are eye appealing to me.
Questionable color. But I like it.
Cuban toner (MS64)
Questionable color. This cent has great color, frosted devices and mirrored fields.
This cent has great color, frosted devices, mirrored fields and it straight graded (PF65BN). The photo does not show the coin very well.
Why this coin straight graded (PF65RB) while the 1950 cent above did not (QC) is a mystery to me. The color on the reverse is wild and stunning. This cent also has frosted devices and mirrored fields.
Another cent with great color (PF66RB). In hand the green color is darker and richer than it appears in the photo, plus the demarcation line between the green and orange color is very defined.
You don’t know me but I ended up with one of your coins. Was raw.
I remember that coin, back from when I had a large set of capped bust halves, I think Habaraca ended up with that coin at one time . That coin is a great EF coin

Fishing on eBay for choice original coins tonight. The catch:
The one that got away after a 'tough fight':
I have posted these photos before. However the color on them is so attractive they decided to show themselves off again.
The both came from a 1958 double mint set.
The dime that got me hooked on early U.S. coins.
1907 High relief
1937 George VI 5 pounds gold piece
This is about as much toning as I like on Morgan dollars. To me it says "I have been in an album for decades" (although it may not be true)! LOL

I like showing these together as it looks like the purple from the top coin is shading the lower one.

I liked this enough, to pay enough and won this 1810 Capped Bust Half on eBay a little over six years ago.

Still like this one. Not expensive, but it just pleases me.
I liked this 1796 Cent....a purchase made by in 1966 by 12 year old me with lawn mowing money! It was $27.50.![](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/editor/mh/t2vw0hqoy7yz.jpeg)

The 1819/8 makes a trio of 1819 overdates I own.

For Barberian. I put the 58-S together a little nicer and gave it a hint of additional focus.

@fastfreddie Love the coins you post here. I know I’d really enjoy seeing your collection in person. You have a great eye.
