Special Request for my Birthday

CatbertCatbert Posts: 7,349 ✭✭✭✭✭

I so enjoy visiting this forum several times a day to learn, listen, and to share our collective passion for this great hobby. As I reflect on my 63rd year of life and overcoming some recent health challenges, I’d like to hear from you a complimentary testimonial regarding a poster here (not me) that has favorably influenced your enjoyment of the hobby and why. An associated pic would be cool too.

From my perspective, there are so many that deserve to be acknowledged. Most recently I’d like to recognize @Crusty for his love of CAC seated dollars, his commitment to learning and admitting early mistakes made, and his invitation to be his friend even though we live on opposite coasts. I don’t have pic access from where I am presently to underscore the point.

So cheers to the Crusry man and let’s hear from you!

PS he would love to buy your gold CAC SLDs!

PPS. Oh gosh, I must add @robec and will do so later. Breaking my own thread rules!!!

Happy Birthday! We may be the same vintage, but I'm not sure if you have just started or finished your 63rd year. I have finished mine. I was thinking about Crusty also for all of the same reasons. His expertise and kindness are exceptional.

    Happy Birthday @Catbert

You know, there are a lot of people I really appreciate here ... and maybe some good stories I could tell ... some people mentioned already, and some not yet ...

But really, you're one of those too. I appreciate your thoughts and posts, your positive, friendly attitude, and your infectious spirit regarding our great hobby!

Hope you have a great Birthday!!

Soooo many good people over the years with sooo much knowledge and camaraderie. Couldn’t even begin to pick just one. @Catbert Happy birthday, my friend!! Thanks for being an honest-to-goodness, genuine person. I have fully enjoyed our conversations. @Crusty thanks for the mention and I have really enjoyed our Liberty seated dollar discussions. You have given me great advice and information, ever since I started navigating this wonderful series, just about two years ago. Also, @MFeld -For someone who was a grader at NGC, former dealer and who currently works for Heritage auctions, he is very friendly, responsive and helpful. Not pretentious, in any way, and I feel privileged to know him.

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Very thankful for everyone here that has helped further my knowledge of numismatics. Admittedly the forum got me into collecting after signing up here just to sell some inherited items.

Specifically @JimTyler and @MFeld have been really helpful in identification and analyzing certain items for me.

@Inspired70 cant believe I forgot to add you on my list above. Your 43 $ is incredible in the true view and even better in hand!

    Happy Birthday!

Although he has rubbed some people the wrong way in the past, his contribution to numismatics has been huge. Not long after I joined this forum, I expressed my interest in Peace Dollars and of course everyone knows I like varieties...so, RWB sent me this. He's an amazing source of knowledge that is no longer able to play in this sandbox. Thanks for the coin and for your contribution to numismatics, Roger.

Based on those already mentioned in this thread, I second @MFeld @robec I also can't go without mentioning @CaptHenway and @TomB for their contributions. MFeld, CaptHenway and TomB are always here to tell you how they see things without sugar coating much and share their experience/knowledge with everyone. As for robec, a good friend indeed...plus a good source of knowledge and good taste in coins. Honorable mention might go to @Floridafacelifter for his willingness to share his fun toys with the forum.

I'll have to think for quite a bit to drill it down to just a couple folks because this forum as a whole has been awesome for my personal development as a collector and numismatist, but for right now, I hope you have a great birthday!

Happy Birthday and great idea for a thread! I would like to thank @robec for introducing me to the world of toned Lincolns (and selling me a gorgeous one). I also have to thank @MFeld for being a tremendous help evaluating coins in Heritage auctions. I have enjoyed corresponding with both of them over the past 7 years!

So many have earned my respect on this forum that it would be impossible for me to narrow it down to one. I really enjoy visiting and learn something every time I do, not to mention some fabulous coins I'd never get to see otherwise.

And oh man has @robec been a friend to me carefully photographing my coins and shipping them so carefully back. I owe him big time and we are going to someday meet where I will treat him to a dinner and his favorite drink many times over. Top shelf guy!

I imagine some may think this is somewhat of an over the top kumbaya thread, yet as we share our frustrations and complaints about this incredible hobby, the people here are what gives this place substance and fun. We should remember that.

And yes @lermish I do have that Catbert comic persona at times and try to reserve it for the occasional observed absurdity.

Thanks to all who have joined in!!!!

Happy Birthday @Catbert ........ Mr Ron Pope (sorry but I can't recall his exact CU ID handle) gave me so much new insight into collecting Buffalo Nickels and became a good friend, unfortunatly he is no longer with us as of last year.

    Happy Birthday!

I cannot narrow it down to two either - I have learned so much from numerous posters on this forum which for me has not only made me a better collector, grader, and photographer, but in the process had made the hobby much more fun!

  • FlyingAlFlyingAl Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭✭✭

There are too many that have been such a blessing!

One thing is for sure - this forum is the best thing that I’ve experienced in numismatics. I can’t be more grateful and thankful for it, and more importantly, the people who spend their time here.

I wish you a great birthday now and for the future, Catbert. Like many have said, there are so many on this forum who have generously helped me for nearly 20 years and so many dear friends have passed that I'll not list them as most also know and have benefitted by their past presence on this and other forums. I will name two who have helped me immensely. Joe Best... @crazyhounddog who has photographed a hundred or so coins for me and shared his love of buffs with me. We are such good friends to have never met, but hopefully someday. Another is Greg... @WalkerGuy21D who helped me so much when I started collecting quality Walkers instead of the dregs I had previously garnered. I spent a week on vacation not a mile from his house but did not know it at the time. Drat! Gosh I would love to name so many more, but I'll not overburden you. Might sneak in another post. I have so many beautiful coins from them both, but I am away on a sad trip to Tennessee and cannot access them here. Bless you all and thank you and PCGS for being there for me.

This site has helped my knowledge and passion for the hobby to grow exponentially.

Before joining here I had never even been to a coin show. I had only been to a few brick and mortar stores and browsed a few internet sites.

@habaraca has been a great mentor in the bust half arena. I have been able to ask a million questions walking around with him on the bourse floor. His only request is that I chauffeur him around on long trips 😂 a perfect coin to post is the bearded goddess he sold to me, knowing it was a dream of mine to own one. Cheers 🍻 Phil!

    …yes it’s straight graded F15

Also to all the great folks willing to lend an ear, give compliments, provide free services out of the goodness of their heart, good deals and provide constructive criticism! @pursuitofliberty @lkeigwin @Crusty @winesteven @Herb_T @Capstick

    Happy Birthday Catbert!
There are so many very knowledgeable and patient members here that I too have a difficult time pinpointing one.
I might just mention a couple that personally stand out.
@BryceM for his knowledge, overall voice of reason and wisdom.
And @ricko for his warm steady and consistent hand in welcoming newbie’s along with his solid appreciation for bright silver.

I started along this journey in the year 2000 by collecting bullion. That lead me to this forum where I discovered numismatics. I found myself enamored by this tiny little thing called a half dime. The next thing I knew @MrHalfDime and @Barndog welcomed me into the half dime world with open arms. They educated me, mentored me, inspired me and without them I would not have become a coin collector, numismatist, coin nerd, half dime geek, what ever you want to call it. I owe them both a debt of gratitude for their time, friendship, openness and willingness to bring newbies into this wonderful world we all share.

There are lots of board members who deserve my thanks, but I’ll limit this reply to three who have known me for over half of my life…

@TomB introduced me to coin shows and showed me the ropes when I began regularly attending.

@MFeld has advised me on numerous purchases, but beyond simply opining on the coin I bought (whether his or from another source), he’s commented on countless more. I owe him more than anyone else for my eye when looking at coins.

@MrEureka has given me tons of advice over the years and found ways to include me in numismatic experiences far beyond what the average collector can dream of. Nearly two decades later and they’re still highlights of my life.

Beyond the above, all three have always been respectful and patient from the time I was a teenager with little money to spend, when it would have been easy to dismiss me. When I have the chance to give advice to a young collector now, doing so is in no small part paying forward what was these three (and many others) did for me.

Happy birthday @catbert My involvement in this forum, has greatly expanded my knowledge base of the study and collection of numismatic items. I appreciate our host and their attention to topics and decorum. I am grateful for those contributors who have showed me the way into the history and legacy of this hobby. I shall endeavor to do my part to be a member in good standing and have some fun along the way. Have a good day. Peace Roy
