Paramount International Coin Corp Slab

My wife collects Morgans and acquired this Morgan, 1883-S, in the Paramount Slab. She was thinking of sending it to PCGS for crossover but I told her I didn’t know about this slab if the coin had more value as it was or in a PCGS slab. I told her I would ask on the forum. Comments?

Did she pay slabbed MS-65 money for it?
Does she have a return privilege on it?
When this coin was graded by Paramount, it was before I invented Ms-63 and MS-67 at ANACS. Any decent original BU coin ended up in an MS -65 holder. Not nice coins ended up in an MS-60 holder. There was nothing in between.
I would definitely keep it in that slab if it were my coin.

I know there's a member who avidly collects these, maybe it's @BryceM. He should be able to help if that's the right member and he sees this.
It's my understanding that NGC will slab it in the Paramount holder like the GSAs.

In my opinion you would lose value if submitted to PCGS, there are collectors that like to collect these Redfield holders. If she(you) want a coin in PCGS holder the best option would be to sell this one and buy a coin in a PCGS holder.
My Collection of Old Holders
Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I dont think they grade these ats anymore,I could be wrong.Grant Cambell at Dalton gold and silver buys these.I would talk to him before cracking it out. There are folks that collect these holders.
Perhaps five years ago I tried to have some done by NGC and they were waiting and waiting and waiting for the bands or whatever they needed to do them. They couldn't give me any completion date and others had already been waiting 6-12 months for the same thing. To my knowledge they don't do them but that could have changed.
Or just read this...
NGC will grade Redfield Dollars inside these original holders by placing a plastic label band around the outside of such holders with its own assigned grade. Since the Redfield holders are not designed and tested by NGC for long-term storage, NGC cannot guarantee the grade it assigns to these coins. This grading is performed as a service to submitters who do not want to lose the nostalgia and collectability of the original holders.
Redfield Dollars may be submitted to NGC under any applicable grading tier for no additional fee. Redfield Dollars must be submitted on a separate submission form and cannot be mixed.
Sarasota has several of these graded by NGC. Below is a link sorted on NGC Morgans with the graded Redfields included. Sarasota definitely asks a premium for them (I don't know how well they sell). So this could be a good route to go.

It's worth more in the holder than having the coin cracked out and graded with "Redfield" on the label. When people want to buy a Redfield Morgan they want it to be in the original holder. I am not sure if PCGS can encapsulate the entire holder like they do for the GSA Morgans or not. ATS should still grade them in the holder and then put a label on the back of the Redfield holder.
I just had this one graded at NGC. It's for sale on E-Bay currently. To correctly resolve the OP's question, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT crack out as they are worth a good bit more in the Paramount Redfield holder. NGC will grade it as is, as they have mine.
Obviously the grade on the slab compared to reality is a point of interest.
My wife is not interested in selling this coin. Thank you for the suggestions and offers via PM.
Good looking coin Herb, and a 83-S is a tough date, of course.
I'd consider getting NGC to certify and grade it as many have suggested here.
You definitely want to keep it in that holder.

Buy the coin and not the holder of the holder……
Some years back I wanted a CC Morgan in a Redfield holder... Looked for one for quite a while, then got distracted - a custom handgun, some high level training... and forgot about it. Should still do that. Cheers, RickO
Not me. I've never even seen one.

Yeah, I didn't think it was you and the guy I'm thinking of had an ID similar but I think he was banned. Sorry about the incorrect shout-out.
NGC all day for this one, OP. Submit it under GSA service and they won't crack it out.

Bryce, I just realized it was one of the "Wabbit" incarnations that has been banned.
My opinion, Leave it alone -as-is

I see black and red inserts. Are there other colors? Is one color scarcer and more valuable than others?
Could someone provide information on the history of the Redfield horde? Perhaps a link?
Thanks in advance.
Bill
There are a few green ones known. It was for the very rare Mint State 65 + coins.

There are also known black holders (MS-60) with a blue Dymo label "MS-63" added.

There is a fun article in "Curry's Chronicles" Redfield Dollars – the Man, the Lore, the Coins By Paul Sudmeier here: https://www.carsoncitycoinclub.com/pdf/Redfiel_Dollars-the_Man.pdf
It talks a little bit about how the Paramount connection came to be.
Can you imagine buying tons of Morgans at $18/ea?

Interesting article and even more interesting person. I did an ebay search and many are listed, red and black inserts, no green ones, and many in other holders. Yes, I will buy all MS 60 (or better) Morgans for $18.00 each.
Thanks to all who responded.

Yes, I can. Once upon a time, people bought tons of them for $1 each.
