Does this 1917-S Mercury dime squeak by as an Uncirculated dime?

Sometimes a buyer will see what they want to see.
Would you grade this as an uncirculated coin or an AU?

    AU55 maybe.

This is why I am glad I asked. I paid $25. for it and as a AU it is a decent deal (it's for a Library of Coins Type set). An MS60 would have made this a bargain.

Hmm, I am thinking it just might. Conserve the surfaces with some soap and water (and more water), possibly with some acetone and repost if you would. The rims look very nice and without ticks, nor do I see substantial wear. I'd jump on that at 25 dollars.

A bath in acetone may help but an AU is still an AU!
    Looks like an AU55!

Based on the images, I wouldn't want to assume anything better than AU. I wouldn't be surprised, however, to hear that after conservation, it turned out to be UNC.

I was hoping to see a weakly struck unc, and maybe it is, but you’ll have to see it in hand for me to say better than a nice AU.

With the obvious circulation wear to the top & base of the wing, plus along the hairline in front of the cap, muted luster in the fields, I grade it AU-53 - 55. Still a very nice Mercury dime, & a great hole filler for a coin folder. I think you did well!

Nice ChAU with a nice strike and decent luster over what looks like original like surfaces. For $25. you got a nice deal IMO

I don't think it will make an unc. grade. Looks 55-ish, but good buy at that price.

  • logger7logger7 Posts: 8,675 ✭✭✭✭✭

It looks like it has been handled too much to go unc.. Though we have seen a fair number of even gold coins with that dark Euro look go unc.. Rub, wear, friction vs. a seasoned assessment can make the difference. Graders know market valuations on all the coins and are not going to give the bump if the market or finalizer gives the thumbs down.
