This caught my eye in the price guide. A PL 1796. I didn't dig any further for info. Thought I would post for viewing.

Nice old coin... and I am attracted to any U.S. coin whose date starts with '17'. Cannot determine what that 'flattening' on the Eagles breast is .... Cheers, RickO

Impressive coin- I even saved the Instagram post back in 2019 when it was announced- apparently a show submission to PCGS

Back in the ‘70s, it was said that there were perhaps 100, 1796 Quarters with P-L surfaces. There was said to be a connection to the Col. Green collection. There was a period during that stretch that the Bowers auction house would offer a P-L 1796 Quarter in each of their sales. Since then the supply seems to have dried up. I have not seen one offered in quite a while.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Interesting and it looks like it happened just shortly after pcgs started grading PL for all (July 2, 2019 announcement).

Interesting. If one, then could be more. I wonder how many that pcgs would grade PL today. Only one since 2019 but then who is trying.

The high grade examples that I have seen in hand (maybe 3-4 total in the MS 65-66 range) have consistently had highly reflective fields and appeared prooflike when compared to the other coins I have seen in hand from the 1790s. It seems they really took very special care in preparing and striking these first quarters.

TDN has (or had) the Pogue / Jung MS-66.
See the roster/provenance at the bottom of the CoinFacts page:

Did all the quarters start out this nice, since it was the first year ?
Or was this coin, maybe, one of the first minted ?

I owned this coin in the past, and TDN may have owned it at one point as well, but it’s not currently in my collection.

Was PCGS calling these PL all along or is that something recent, like how they started calling business strike gold coins PL if warranted? NGC used the PL designation all along.

The answer is in the 3rd post in this thread.
PCGS started designating PL in 2019.
As also posted above, probably most of the high grade 1796s are actually PL but many or most have not visited PCGS since 2019.
Also PCGS CoinFacts has many pages with rosters which have not been updated in awhile.
