GTG 1838 $2.5 Classic Head

PedzolaPedzola Posts: 1,027 ✭✭✭✭✭

Big week for me, added 2 coins! Posted the first, an 1857 $5 already. I'll make this one a "guess-the-grade."

I was very happy to add a $2.5 classic head to my collection. My $5 is also an 1838 so I thought this was a nice companion piece. I have always been intrigued by the obverse bust variations for these, the 1838 being a single year type I think. Why did they keep changing the head?

Anyway I only need 1 for my type set! Let me know what you think. Easy to cheat by looking at my set on the registry link in my signature if you want to check your guess.

It looks very similar to mine. I’ll go AU50. I could see XF45 but I still think 50.

    53.

    I would guess a bit higher. I think it’s an attractive 53.

I’m in the 55 camp and really like it. I still need one for my type set. Very hard to find nice original pieces like this.

Alright, a couple hours seems long enough. Whats the difference between a 55 and 58? Though it may not show in the pictures the coin is very flashy with great luster.

I should have gone with my first thought. Excellent pick up.

Well... late again... Was going to guess 55 based on the OP pictures... The picture in the slab shows better though. Cheers, RickO

    Beautiful coin!

Love the coin. Surprised at the low guesses but gold is hard from photos (at least that’s my excuse when I am way off).
    Enjoy it!

Late but, was thinking 53 based on the first pics. As typical the further away pics are closer to the in-hand look thus 58.
Oh yea, sprinkle in some difficulty for the particular date.

Whats the difference between a 55 and 58? by @Pedzola

I consider the 1835 and 1836 quarter eagles that I posted to be AU-58s. PCGS graded the 1835 MS-62+, It has a CAC sticker. The 1836 is graded MS-62. I had it graded myself, and it has never been to CAC.

Both of these coins are graded AU-58. This one is graded three points too high, but it's a tough date. You don't realize that until you start shopping for one.

This 1839-O is graded AU-58 CAC. I think that this piece is very high end for the grade. I paid a premium price for this one.

Thanks BillJones for the examples. Its helpful. I guess I still have a lot to learn about grading.

It was a very tough lesson to learn when starting out that the grade on the slab is not good enough and there could be huge variation in quality from one coin the next.

I've been trusting my eye more but relying heavily on CAC to learn what a coin should look like at a particular grade. So to hear that you significantly disagree with cac on grades is discouraging.

My first thought was an AU55, and a nice looking coin at that.

After seeing some of the images you showed later in the thread, I can also see it as a 58.

Some really nice early Classic Heads in here, and some good pointers as well.

Beautiful coin. At first, I was thinking 53 but I don't know how to grade these.
