February begins with some beautiful, low grade, hard to find Yankees goodness. The first is the baseball legend in an obscure and tough to come by though star heavy set in a beautifully posed 5x7 action shot that was also used in other period issues. Sadly, I don't have a ton from his playing days but I'm certainly making an effort to change that and this is a big get in that regard since it dates to 1930. If I send this one to PSA (I might, rabbit, I might), it would even the population report off at 20 total examples graded.

    1930 W554 Babe Ruth

Pickup number two is a much nicer copy of an item I already had - though still beat up because its me we're talking about - that is also considered a toughie; Rawlings pumped out a lot of material with his likeness and since his gloves often sold out and the photos were pretty popular too as pinup posters, several unique poses ended up being issued over the years. This one likely dates to around '62 specifically though they're painted with the 1950-1970 brush officially. With the scan below it was slightly too big for my scanner to accomodate all four sides (8.5ish x10.5ish).

1950-70 Rawlings Advisory Staff Photos - Mickey Mantle (Waist Up, Road Uniform)

Awesome pick ups. Looking at the stuff you have been buying the last couple years, you have really hit the jackpot on several cards(not that you are looking to sell), but you have been buying in a great lane. Superb!

Really kind of you to say. I have been very fortunate, yes, and I think there’s a lot of really great material out there that for whatever reason just needs a little more light shining on it to get it noticed. The pre-Topps era features so many of the sports most esteemed players and there’s some incredibly beautiful baseball material from that period of time: postcards, 5x7s, strip cards, hand cut cards, premiums, panels and pinups, to name just a few that are out there, in addition to the more traditional, standard sized baseball card. The image on this Ruth is just amazingly clear and the size is like that of a cabinet card. Babe Ruth had his likeness on many things during his career and sizes were played with by all the various companies until Topps settled on a size in 1957 that would basically become the ‘standard’ size that we all embrace today.

Very well said, and very wise advice to collectors in a market that has priced many people out.

A while back I rolled the dice and bought a box of 81 Football vending off of EBAY that was not BBCE wrapped, at a good price. I wanted it to open for fun. I reached out to the seller and he explained he had the box and others for decades. I then bought another 81 Football, 2 - 78 Baseball and 1 - 80 Baseball from him. I opened one of the 81 Football - the year I first started collecting.

When I first opened the box, the vending "collation pin stripes" on top looked great so that was a bit of a relief. I then went through the entire box. All the cards were super fresh/glossy with stars and HOF'ers included. Centering was a little hit and miss as usual. A fun walk down memory lane and even pulled two nice Montana Rookies!!

Will share the results of the other boxes as I open them.

Sweet pulls Chris - is that par for the course for Montana pulls out of a vending box. Those looked pretty good condition wise.

    Super nice card

Thank You! Centering is good for this card and no tilt that plague so many of his rookies.

Because I’m not really condition sensitive, I will grab cool items in off grade condition at low prices often. So when this tough to find beauty popped up, it was a no brainer for me. I have a sharp one, also, but this double poster - basically two 8x10 prints in one, for lack of a better description, retains some really solid appeal despite the obvious wear: four pinholes, two that tore off the top two corners, staining, minor rips and creases all present. And yet…

    1960s Manny’s Baseball Land Mantle-Maris Poster

Those are both great images. Maris looking uncharacteristically relaxed and happy and Mick doing a full action pose.

I finally added the first graded card to my collection, and here it is. EXTREMELY low pop -- in fact, there are just five more PSA 9's of this card than there are 1952 Mantle PSA 9's!

To which I'll hastily add that no, I didn't spend some insane price to have it graded, but rather got it off eBay.

I should also note that the white flecks were on the scanner or case, not the card.

Because I lack patience, the Bambino has hit the coast! While it’s not better than PSA 1 or authentic because of the torn lower right corner, I can’t wait until George Herman returns!

Curious about the rare, mysterious and beautiful 1951 Wheaties Premium Photos?

Todays my birthday, so what better day than to get a shipment back from PSA!

I have a PSA 8 of the triple Reynolds card that was graded over a decade ago, and yours is so much nicer. It couldn’t be clearer that grading standards for this set have substantially tightened since then, and anyone buying an old flip 1971 should definitely make sure they are getting their money’s worth.

I overpaid for this card because I have been looking for a nice one for a long time. I don’t know what to do anymore, every card I am interested in on eBay is priced at 2-3 times historical norms. Seems like the only choices are overpay or take a hiatus.

I feel the same with the cards I do purchase but I can also say that I have always come out ahead on every single one that was high quality (such as the Sutton example you purchased) if I held long enough simply because I purchased as a collector.

Agree - cards go up over time. My collection is primarily graded 7-9. The 9s in my collection have gone up exponentially compared to my 8.5s, 8s, 7.5s and 7s.
