Good evening. LordM is among you, but only for a few minutes. I am still at work, and Dr. Rivera in Room 9 just decided he wanted Room Service at 9:30, so I am chatting on borrowed time, so to speak. Saturday nights this "work" stuff really gets in the way of my Forum time, LOL. I'll hafta speak with the boss about that. I'm sure he'll be really understanding.
Anyway, before I catch up on the PM's and everyone's clues, here is another friendly reminder:
LordM is having a hard time keeping up with his own game, here, and needs a little help.
PLEASE REQUEST YOUR SPECIFIC CLUES BY NUMBER, ON THIS THREAD (NOT PM).
I will not PM any clues if you do not request them BY NUMBER. I don't feel like picking everyone's coins anymore. The game is in your hands, in a way. Use your own strategies in making your selections. I am interested to see who comes out on top, and have no idea who is in the lead!
If you have a complete text description of a virtual coin and need to get the picture, I will still honor these requests via PM, when I can.
Dpoole- nice to see an old pal join up. These virtual coins must look pretty humble next to your real ones. How goes it with the proof 3cN's? You asked for two clues, but as a new player, you are entitled to six on your first day (2 thereafter). You also get the 3cN free, since that is your icon.
I gotta go soon, but I will return after midnight Eastern. I'm off tomorrow, except for keeping Baby Victoria. (Hope her teething doesn't make her too cranky!)
RGL said he didn't think he had a chance of winning, so he asked for some free clues to post elsewhere. If he does not wish to compete for the prize any more, but still wishes to play, I might "deputize" him and put him in charge of most of the pictures, to share while I am not on the forums. Just an idea. Haven't brought it up with him, yet. Anyway, I am off the next 3 days, and the game will probably be won by someone by that time. Maybe I don't need a "deputy". (But the job is yours if you want it, RGL. You'd forfeit the prize but get lots of respect, heheh).
Be back with you later, depending on the whims of our resort guests.
Whew! A three hour window before LordM returns. That means I can get out of this chair (though, it is pretty comfortable). I might get this laundry done, afterall.
Deputy Dawg, Since you're assuming some of the contest duties, can you send me your email address? I can't read profiles or send PMs.
While we are all waiting, click the link below, save the questions and answer them by 6 p.m. tomorrow to help a kid collect! Giveaway link below. Officially endorsed by LM himself!
Don't forget to post what you sent to everyone here in the open, RGL. This way I don't come behind you and send all these beggars double clues.
Everyone- you must request your clues in the open. The 2-clue referral bonus is hereby canceled, though RGL will pay any clues due for that up until now. We have enough players. He has all the URL's but one. I have given him another one of the coins from this set (the real coin, not just virtual) as payment for putting up with everyone's demands. He's gonna earn it. When I started this thing, I knew it would take some work, but I had no idea it would become a blockbuster smash hit beyond my control!
If I forgot anyone's PM's, I apologize. I just got buried. Pester my deputy for a while.
Ok, whew ... (how did LM do this and retain his sanity?). All requested and earned coins have been distributed via PM. Per the Lord, the new player recruitment clue bonus is no longer in effect as of this posting. We also will be placing a few other virtual coins somewhere out there ...
To summarize latest virtual coins granted to help trading requests including the posts that follow ...
ajaan: 77, 78 mact: 42, 48 a2labmom: 70, 71 dpoole: 77, 79 GaCoinNewbie: 43, 72 RGL: 36, 42 (I'm out out of the competition, folks, but these were traded to another player via an earlier trade, so they are out there) ClarkofKent: 81, 82 MS67Plus: 59, 70, 71, 79
Gee, and I became a senior member along the way ...
Hello. I have been so busy answering PM's that I have not been able to post here.
It would appear we have a winner. But that is not, repeat, not verified yet. This winner has all the answers, but there is one coin clue I was holding back, that even RGL did not have. The potential winner says he got the clue in text format only.
Now, before I go any further, I will say that ClarkOfKent's claim to have been the first does check out. He emailed me the full list, and he was the first to crack open the case, with all 89 coins. But he said he used a little wizardry of some sort to get the last bit, so he was a good enough sportsman to excuse himself from the prize. He said he was in it for the challenge and not the prize, anyway. Clark, I salute you. I don't know how you did it, but I know it was mostly above-board. Your skills have earned you the deputy post in the next Virtual Coin Giveaway, the Dark Side sequel to this one, if you are up to the challenge. But that will be a little while, yet. No promises. It's still on the drawing board. I could use a tech-savvy deputy the next time around.
Our apparent winner claims to have gotten coin #57 (my last holdout) from Bikingnut. I did not PM this coin to Bikingnut. I do not remember sharing it with anyone or posting it publicly. ClarkOfKent says that all the clues he published and shared with others were earned the fair way, not through wizardry.
WILL EVERYONE WHO HAS COIN #57 PLEASE PM ME AND TELL ME WHERE THEY GOT IT?
If it shows up in my PM history as having been sent to someone, then our winner's claim checks out, though I will probably question him further and make him jump through one or two small hoops, to satisfy my own mind.
#82 was my second-to-last holdout. Later this evening I released it to RGL for sharing, though.
I HEREBY DECLARE WHITEWASHQTR THE WINNER OF THIS COMPETITION.
His list checks out, and #57 has been verified. I did indeed PM it to Bikingnut earlier, but overlooked it when I checked my PM history the first time. Duhhh.
WWBillman- you PM'ed RGL about two coins that you claimed to be the sole holder of, but I am afraid that might not be the case. I scattered a bunch of clues out there, and may have PM'ed them to someone else. My decision of the winner is final, but if you feel slighted in any way, I'm sure a small consolation prize can be arranged. You earned one, and you made short work of the first 24 "warmup" round. You played a helluva good game, and revealed yourself to be a true sportsman. I salute the rest of our players, as well.
Nothing but #57 (I thought, wrongly) and #82 were anybody's exclusive domain (mine). And I released #82 to RGL in the final innings. If anyone did not get their PM's answered, and a lot of you did not, I sincerely apologize. I had a busy night at work, and I was snowed under with PM's. I couldn't handle all the responses. Hats off to RGL as a great deputy in this, but I'm afraid I appointed him a few hours too late. I wish I had "hired" him from the start.
There is a "Dark Side" sequel to this game on the drawing board, but it will take me some time to prepare, and I have some shipping and other junk to catch up on, first. This sequel will be a little better-planned in advance, and I will try to have firmer rules up front, instead of making them up as I go along. The new game, when it is launched, will not be a formal set like this one, and it will be most (or all) world coins. One idea is this: the first to collect all of that group of virtual coins will win first pick of the group as a prize (choose your own reward!), the second to finish gets second pick, and my deputy will get third pick as compensation for his or her assistance. I will also try to simplify some of the mecahnics of the game, and the clues may be awarded randomly rather than by request. Not sure how I'll do it yet. I will have a deputy who will be given most (but not all) of the clues, to help out when I am absent. Not all the clues will be uploaded at the same time, and I may use different hosting sites. I will take steps to protect myself from hackers, even friendly, sportsmanlike ones, like ClarkOfKent (who I would love to have as my next deputy, if he has the time to commit to it...?) I'm an idea man, but definitely not a techno wizard.
Thank you all for playing. This has been a lot of fun for me, as much as I hope as it has been for you. It was a lot of work, and if it was a bit flawed here and there, it is only because I overlooked some things, and I had no idea this would take off like it did. Now that I have some idea, a little inkling of the magic (and hard work) necessary to pull off a giveaway like this, I should be able to do others more smoothly. I did my best to make this one educational as well as fun, and from the responses I got, it looks like I did OK in that regard.
My apologies to all for getting behind in communications, and to some who are still awaiting shipment of previous giveaway commitments. Bear with me, please. And if a month goes by and it appears I have forgotten you, a gentle reminder is in order.
Clark, I'd love to have you. There are only two concerns. One, your inability to send PM's, only receive them. This is a big snag, and maybe you can talk to one of the administrators about it? The only other concern is your schedule. I would like to have my deputy/assistant be someone who is at least partially available in the mornings and early afternoons (before about 3 or 4 PM Eastern), as my usual times are in the evenings, late nights, and sometimes graveyard hours of the morning. I need a referee for when I am absent.
If you don't work out as a candidate, my second choice would have to be Jarrett "hookedoncoins". He seems to have tech savvy, time to spend on the forums, a love of Darkside coins, and an ability to send and receive and reply to PM's normally. But is he a morning person?
If you get your PM issues sorted out, Clark, are available mornings (not crack-of-dawn, but what "normal" people consider morning- you know I'm not "normal"), and if you want the job, it's yours. I will be "Lord" and master of the next Virtual Collection (patent pending), but you can be the Grand Wizard. (No, wait, that makes you sound like a redneck wearing a white sheet, LOL). Just plain ol' Wizard. Or make up your own title. Actually, your cool handle is suggestive of a good title (which you earned by pulling off your "win", mostly by legal means and some by technological means.)
If ClarkOfKent does not work out, and hookedoncoins has better things to do, how 'bout it, RGL? You were great as a deputy gamemaster, in your brief reign. (Oops, sorry- I guess your official title was "Deputy Dawg", huh?)
When my deputy (or wizard, or whatever) is found, then we can begin planning for the next game. I have some pretty good ideas for it already.
Rob, Great contest. Through it I learned how to send photos in a PM and how to have photos appear in the text of a post.
To all those who I PMed this morning with #77, and 78, I apologize. I had not realized the contest ended when I sent the PMs, I have a 'regular' schedule and am not usually up at 3AM Eastern.
Congrats WWQ.
DPOTD-3 'Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery'
I sometimes wish I had a "regular" schedule. A throbbing toothache plus the usual insomnia, and the fact that I am slightly manic at the moment have ensured that I never got a wink of sleep. Yes, folks, your pal LM is a borderline manic-depressive. Not a serious case, but not a laughing matter either. Ahh, the joys of a bipolar existence! I mention this only because it offers some partial explanation for the sometimes bizarre behavior (which all of us obsessive collectors are prone to, anyway, right?) That is one reason besides work and family to explain the occasional weeklong absences. (Usually during a depressive phase). Now you know I'm whacko; but don't spread it around, OK? The nice thing about the manic phase is that it heightens creativity, producing such brainstorms as this whole giveaway thingie...
Dan, I just spent an hour or two adding all the pictures to the list, plus the story behind many of the individual coins, when the *%#@ing dialup modem disconnected itself, as it loves to do (Can't wait until my DSL-friendly laptop is fixed!) I reconnected just fine, and then the baby, who is awake now and crawling around, pulled up on the desk, hit the keyboard, and canceled my entire edit. Hours of typing and pasting down the toilet.
Victoria is a sweetheart, but Daddy had to take a little time-out there, put Baby back in her crib, and go outside to smoke, before he said or did something unDaddylike...
I will start over later and tell the full story and add the pics when I can. I spent 4+ years and over $10-12K building that set; it is nice to be able to share it in this way, to an appreciative audience. I would love to tell the tales.
After I do that, the work on the sequel Darkside game begins, once I find a partner/wizard/deputy/co-referee.
Congratulations, whitewashqtr, I knew wwbillman to be right on your heels ... and, clarkofkent, it sure was startling when your e-mail arrived with all of the coins! (I did not know you to be in the hunt ) Thanks to all players for the collegiality and cooperation.
But, a particular saute to our gamemaster ... LM put a lot of time and energy into our virtual coin hunt and allowed many players to become more acquainted with one another in the process. We doff our numismatic hat to you, LM. Thanks, Randy
I am sometimes a morning person. I like to get up early, it just doesn't happen too often. I'm sure you can see why, considering I am usually up late nights on the forums.
Try as I might, I cannot get my features, such as PM & Profiles to work. I've tweaked my javascript settings... I've tried everything. So, I guess I wouldn't be the logical choice as partner/wizard/deputy/co-referee.
I'm still available to help in any way I can. For instance, I have a couple of web addresses that I'm not currently using if you want to have a devoted web page for the contest. I don't know if you pay to have your images hosted on the web, but I can do that for free for you. I always have a few gig of hard-drive space available for a good cause.
Not sure what happened to my 4PM post. But I see its not here!
Well the game is over and I'm EXHAUSTED!! It was a great contest and a lot of fun!! I met some really nice people playing the game, in addition to learning a lot about coins!!
To LORDMARCOVAN -- Thank you so much for your time and effort and coming up with a great contest, simply ingenious. You were a gracious host and I really enjoyed looking at your collection. I am glad to own a piece of it. I sure have a great story to tell about how I got the Liberty Nickel.
RGL -- Thank you for your last minute contribution by taking over the game for LM while he helped Dr. Rivera with his stuffed fried chicken.
Bikingnut -- Thank you personally for your help in getting things straightened out at the end!! Enjoy your coin!1
ClarkofKent -- Don't know how you hacked the server, but I appreciate your fairness and sportsmanship.
WWBillman -- I knew you were close. You played with such enthuiasm. It made it fun for me!!
A2labmom, Ajaan, GACoinNewbie, Hookedoncoins and to all the other participants who shared clues and offered their assistance, THANK YOU!!

But, a particular saute to our gamemaster ... LM put a lot of time and energy into our virtual coin hunt and allowed many players to become more acquainted with one another in the process. We doff our numismatic hat to you, LM. Thanks, Randy

Look forward to the next contest if I am around!!
Sincerely,
