It is not that life is short, but that you are dead for so very long.
Some very cool coins and tokens posted - congrats!
While not my most expensive purchase this year, I was really happy to find 2 Saints in Compugrade holders this spring.
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose.
Probably this coin - a lightly cleaned and nicely retoned, mid-to-late die state 1855/854 overdate - my first official eBay cherrypick and the start of my interest in scarce die marriages. Unfortunately, these sellers' photos don't show the nice, colorful secondary toning this coin has.
This spectacular carving from Gediminas Palsis is one of the coolest pickups from this year.
Also getting my photography setup dialed in. This is my photo of the coin.
A good year, filled some rarity holes and finished my early half dollar year set with a 1796. Added a couple of big tens, this one is common but looks good:

It's that time of year, holidays right around the corner. A good time to stop and take a look back at your year in coins, and do a bit of self-reflection. What was your favorite purchase? Was it a big score $-wise? A big coin for a set/collection you're working on? Did you finally find your white whale? All of the above?
It's been by far the biggest year for me and as I look back perhaps spent more than I intended. Being a general type collector, there are no white whales, but these set me back a bit. Overall, I'm happy!

(1863) Good For a Scent/ Good For A Drink token-2 1/2 Chapman Pl. Boston, MA. ex. Steve Tanenbaum, Rich Hartzog
Yea, it doesn't look like much, does it?
But this little token is very important, and it is the only example known. It is a Civil War Storecard that mules Joseph Merriam's famous Good For A Scent reverse die with an unlisted obverse die. This advertises an unknown bar owner on Chapman Place, right in the middle of Merriam's Boston neighborhood. It's "Good for a drink!"
Very exciting to me. Most people have never even heard of this variety. Not even me until this year, and I specialize in Merriam's work.
A new variety of the most popular Civil War token design in the whole series? After 150 years? I fell out of my seat, and I consider myself very fortunate to now own this.

1928 P Peace dollar - Bought this coin at the coin show in Raleigh from a SC dealer that I have purchased from in the past and he made me a great deal on this one - if I recall it was ~200 which was a nice example for that price. Yes it has an unfortunate bag mark from hell but outside of that it is a nice example and some thick luster which I rarely see on the 28.
Has the luster of a 23 but really is a 28..!!
I may get it graded but doubt it goes higher than a 61 or 62 with this big scratch (flawless otherwise) but I might get it graded just to see how this would be graded and learn from it.

should be arriving in the mail today, albeit by FEDEX, which makes me nervous in light of the Alabama dump last week. I am pretty excited about it.
I probably spent more this year on coins than all my years of collecting combined. I was more of a thrifty collector opting for cheap type coins but gradually moved away from that to quality pieces I have to pay up for. These 2 bust quarters are my favorite purchases this year and the most expensive coins I've bought to date.

This year I spent a lot of time focusing more on Canadian coins so didn't pick up nearly as many American coins as I typically do.
For whatever reason, I’ve always been super picky with peace dollars and struggled to find one I really liked (toned or untoned). When this coin was available I jumped at the chance to add it to my typeset, and I think it will be a great match with the other coins in my collection!
@Donato - that chain cent set off a bunch of bells! That looks like that exact coin I was going to trade for back in the mid to late '90s but had to back out. How I wish I could go tell my younger self to get on with it! Its value has climbed steadily upward since... Such is life. Congrats on that chain cent addition!
What a fantastic year for all of you. I'm in awe of the coins in this thread. While my biggest (literally) purchase of the year wasn't a coin, it still tops my list. Although I received it in May, it seems like a hundred years ago now:
My purchase yesterday from the mint of the 2021 uncirculated P & D set. It keeps me up to date. That's very important to me. The only 2 other coins that I bought this year were an1808 Capped Bust half and a Vancouver Comm. The 1808 is AU 55 and very nice. The Vancouver is good too. MS 65. Only problem is after looking through everything....... I have BETTER 1808 halfs and better Vancouver Comms. I have to STOP! Get back to the basics. Be like a kid again. Go for the important stuff.......So.....My favorite purchase of 2021...... the 2021 mint set. Not to go off topic, but I definitely would, not for the grade but for the guarantee of authenticity. It'll be much easier for you or your heirs to sell that way.
Very cool - Is that struck in a quarter planchet or an SBA?
