Your Year in Review: What Was Your Favorite Coin Purchase of 2021?

It's that time of year, holidays right around the corner. A good time to stop and take a look back at your year in coins, and do a bit of self-reflection. What was your favorite purchase? Was it a big score $-wise? A big coin for a set/collection you're working on? Did you finally find your white whale? All of the above?
For me, it was an uncertified 1891-CC GSA.
NGC 63 today, pending CAC. Slots nicely into my CC GSA on a budget (all buys under $1k, not sure I'll ever get the '79-CC!) set.
I had bigger hits $ wise, but this is my favorite long-term piece I've added to my collection this year for a combination of reasons.
Honorable mentions go out to the following;
1841 $1, PCGS Rattler MS63 CAC.
1839 10c, NGC Fatty MS64 Gold CAC.
1856-S $3, PCGS Rattler VF35 Gold CAC.
One more I don't want to spoil yet.

For me, it's this one.

Raw and just a bit of an old cleaning but I absolutely love it. It sits in a capital plastic holder now and I'm always admiring it.

I did not add many this year.... I am very happy with my CC privy Morgan and my 2021 Peace dollar. Both are exceptional quality. Cheers, RickO
I would have to say this 1853-O Arrows and Rays half. I just love the look of these coins and I have been looking for a nice example from the New Orleans mint. Now on the hunt for the quarter version of this coin!
My favorite purchase this year is an aureus of Caracalla with a facing head of Medusa on the reverse. It's exceptionally rare, and one of the finest known examples. Medusa is a symbol used to avert evil, having the power to turn her adversaries to stone with her gaze, defending the empire from invasion:
Pretty sure 2021... I tend to lose track.
I bought a series of Year sets at auction the Walking Liberty Halves from which are all currently at PCGS being graded. I see no reason why they shouldn't receive lots of love. I trust these will be my favorite purchases.

A popular poem when these were in circulation was: "To make a dollar of Spain for five shillings pass, stamp the head of a fool on the neck of an ass."

I'm not actively collecting but got bit by the 1955 Lincoln DDO bug recently
That's the first time I've heard the first line!

should be arriving in the mail today, albeit by FEDEX, which makes me nervous in light of the Alabama dump last week. I am pretty excited about it.
I only bought 2 items in 2021 to add to my collection...
Definitely this 1814/3 CBH….bought it as a PCGS 55 and upgraded it to 58 on a regrade submission!

I'll trade you Dave 👆
Far from my 'biggest' purchase, but my favorite, as I love 1924-P Peace dollars, and this one has the right combo of condition, textured luster, and enough color to make it interesting.
My MS65 CAC Walker 1941-S

It's not a U.S. coin since I am now on a very low profile. It's this Gordian II denarius. This is a really rare Roman coin, especially in this grade. Gordian II was emperor for less than two weeks in 238 AD with his father, Gordian I. After he died in battle, his father Gordian I, who was about 80 years old committed suicide.
And here a nice a Gordian I denarius, which is a bit less nice than the previous piece.
How do you tell the difference between them? The son is bald, and the father has hair.
Very nice everyone, I been gone most of the year but did add a boat load of the Peace and morgan silver dollars and 2 palladium that is good enough for me I may buy one or two things I still have a few more days. If not I have next year.
Hoard the keys.
My favorite coin purchase of the year sold within days of me putting it into inventory
Part of being a coin dealer
Bought a 21s morgan in Feb. to finish the set.
Really nice stuff so far! Love that counterstamp!

It's so interesting to look back. The year has been an incredibly slow one for me, numismatic-wise. I've only purchased 5 or 6 coins. I sold about the same number.
This one is probably my favorite of the year. There are tons of these "out there" but scarce few with the sort of look I like:
Didn't buy any coins this year.
I did buy a Slinky, that flew on STS-92, that was used to show school kids how things moved in space.
U.S. Type Set
Got these two very expensive indians this year.

I guess it would have to be this. Not so long ago I never thought I would spend this much for a coin for my collection!
Definitely this.....

Out of one of the Simpson sales..

Nice coins have been few and far between on the market this year, and ive only bought 2 coins this year. One of them was an upgrade for my typeset, one was a nice key date that i bought to throw in my key date box.

Tough call, but I'm going to have to say this one. I just need a 21-D and my broadstruck 1921 Morgan set will be done.

I've got three in particular that stand out, and I am still in love with all of them:

1) The ex. Gardner 1904 in PF-67 Cam. This coin just glows, and I can see why Gene had it in his amazing collection. 2) The Simpson 1892 Half in PF-67+ Cam. The coin is just out of this world. I never thought I would own it. 3) The ex. Simpson 1941-s, not a high grade, but the color is crazy, and typifies many of the top-flight toners he had in his collection. Notice a theme here?
All beautiful coin posted so far! I love each and everyone. I have 4 (cut down from 8)\
That I am supper great full for. Oddly enough them emulate coins but are not.
I must admit even those this year I have been in the crapper as far as health goes but, unbelievably
lucky in numismatics.
And even more curious they is ins’t one that is a coin, there all token!
.
1) top left, an o/s creation Of Daniel Carr. This 1793 silver center is amazing
creation. If looked close enough you can see the stars from the undertype.
2) and Dan Carr creation of a 1848 CAL o/s….fabulous!
3)right is an 1803 Kettle token I found in the wild !
4) Is a GMM piece 2000 One Concept struck on silver.

I have two favorite purchases this year. One ancient and one modern.
The ancient: Faustina Senior Aureus. I like the Choice-AU portrait.

The modern: Multi-struck Sacagawea dollar. I have been looking for an example that shows two Sacagawea faces. Nice to find it this year. Extra happy that it is a multi-struck, which is rarer than double or triple struck. No need to think about upgrade

Hmm, favorite one of the year... Lots of contenders there...
Probably this one. I bet it would PL if sent in for reconsideration.

well, that "Society of Medalists" 111.1 did in fact arrive in the mail/FEDEX this afternoon. surprisingly, the images don't fully depict the depth of the medal, it probably rises a full quarter-of-an-inch above the rims. I've never seen anything like it and can't stop looking at it.
How timely. I was just writing up this narrative as I always do at the end of the year.
Like many of you I had to adjust my collecting habits during the second year of Covid. Compared to 2020, I purchased around the same number of coins (33 Vs 39 in 2020) but I spent nowhere the same amount of time on line searching. That’s because I spent the winter of 2020 building a camper Van and hit the road hard during 2021 piling on 23,000 miles. My timing was not good to attend any large shows. So my first and only show attendance since Covid was at my local Ladsen, SC show which as usual, took 15 min of my time to find nothing.
With most of the coins now purchased other than the Ultra rare 6-7 Lincoln Varieties I mostly spent my time and money procuring a few upgrades. Since there is no new Cherry Pickers Guide on the horizon I am also anticipating a few coins (actually this is a wild a** guess) as to what may end up in it when it does finally hit the book shelves. So, when I see a nice variety example, I will buy it and plan to hold it until that updated book ever comes out. As usual there are the new year cents purchased to fill both the registry and my raw set. So what’s left is not much but the 3 highlights for me are:
1911 D/D RPM 3 upgrade to MS 63 BRN. This is a scarce cent. Not sure yet if it’s because of different die states that it’s hard to pick, or, its simply scarce. Regardless, I did not pick the coin. My friend who collects R&B cents was delighted to get a 66 R&B 1938 D RPM 1 I had sent him after upgrading mine with a 66 RED example. He already had the 1911 D cent graded, but not attributed so he gave me the coin in exchange and I sent it in to get the attribution. This is a Pop 1 coin.

Next up was my 1956 Proof DDO# 2 FS-101. This coin I have cherry picked a lot in the past but never could get an example graded better than PR 66. In fact, the only higher PCGS example was a PR 67. I really do not consider a PR 67 grade hard to obtain so I was on a mission to find one. But these have been getting harder to come by because of so many others searching for them. I also see a lot of incredible greedy sellers who are clueless on market price acceptance for this DDO and ask Moon Money and they are mostly in NGC holders. This has always been a problem for me as I felt not only does NGC over grade proofs, it means I have to take a chance if I buy a NGC coin to get it to crossover. But low and behold, an example shows up in a NGC PR 67 holder with good pictures and the BIN price of $250 so I felt I could afford to gamble with a crossover attempt and if it did not cross, sell it and recover my money in the NGC holder. Keep in mind PCGS statistics on Cross over attempts is way less than ½ the coins submitted. Much to my surprise it crossed making it a pop 2 none higher graded example.

My only other highlight of the year was the purchase of a MS 62 BRN 1966 DDR. This is simply too hard of a coin to pick with crappy eBay photographs so I just bought it out right and paid dearly for it but I also feel confident it is a very scarce coin that seldom comes up and rarely in MS condition. Only 5 total have been graded and this is the second highest MS graded example.

Probably my 1921 Peace and 2021 Peace dollars.

The Bust rarities and great Trade dollars don't hold a candle to the absolute rarity of this one. Bought as an ANACS AU50 and crossed in grade. Lafayette DuVall-4E, with only 4 known.
Those are common as water ...... but nowhere near THAT GRADE. Wow!
Didn’t do a lot of buying this year…more selling. But this was my fav pick up:
@boiler78 dayum 😆💪🏻⭐️
Great stuff, folks! Aside from a few trivial bullion items I only bought one coin in 2021, but I am very pleased with it. These are the seller's pics. It's got a lot of PL flash in hand.
Sorry I don’t have better photos but she’s in New Jersey seeking a CAC review.
My first bust dollar.

Wasn’t a busy year for buying, but this is probably my favorite for 2021. Bidding has been really strong for Classic Head gold lately. Lost out on quite a few auctions during the year. Found this one on the BST at a very good price. Looks fantastic in hand.

It's a tough call, but I feel like I need to include two coins here, a nice 1813 bust half and a toned 1883 Morgan in a color scheme I didn't have.

Gorgeous Coins Everyone! It wasn't the most costly, but this one completed my Early Coppers series in my 7070:

My favorite coin has to be the
Morgan 1879s NGC ms 64 CAC.
Picked this up online from a guy I met at Chicago's ANA Convention.
Ben the Coin Geek from YouTube.
This was my first ever CAC coin. The Morgan looks better than the grade, which probably explains the CAC sticker? Love the PL appearance.
My favorite coin buy for 2021. Thanks
