We've completed our review of your unauthorized activity case, and we’ve determined there was no unauthorized use.

there's your mistake right there. you initiated the payment, so there was no unauthorized use.

this was a payment for goods and services. you should have waited for the bad tracking number to not work for a week or two then filed a claim for non-fulfillment.

I filed the claim with a full explanation of what happened hoping a human would look at it and call me to discuss the case. Obviously, I was wrong and I believe a computer made the decision and not a human.

I am hoping the appeal will get me to a live person. If not, I am hoping my bank will validate the dispute if PayPal doesn't make it right🤞

I assume that the contact process at PayPal is heavily automated, and I have no idea what your options are/were, but the charge was not "unauthorized".

Hopefully they will present another way to claim fraud. Maybe the appeal will elevate it to an actual human.

Very discouraging, though. What are the added protections we pay for when we use PayPal? Maybe it takes a bit longer to get to the fraud stage.

Exactly! I agree and thank you for your support. I knew it wasn't unauthorized use but it was the only option I could choose at the time to notify PayPal.

You would think PayPal would want to know immediately instead of making me wait 20 days to prove I never received the coins.

Also, this is why I am being transparent and posting updates so other members can learn from my mistake. Hopefully I will get my money back but if not I will not dwell on it. Just learn from it and move on.😎

Based on our review, we found this transaction is consistent with your PayPal payment history."

I have filed an appeal and am waiting for a response from PayPal.

Also, I have now filed a dispute with my bank since PayPal denied my claim.

Also, my buddy Teddy sent me this email:

    Good morning,
I got notifications from paypal which says you said you aint aware of the money you

Please let me know what’s going on
Anyways I already issue a refund back to your account

Unfortunately, he lied. The money has not been refunded as of now and he has not sent me a tracking number. I have not and will not respond to his email.

As you can see his email is grammatically incorrect which is a huge red flag that this guy is a scammer. Still licking my wounds over my mistake😫

I will provide updates accordingly. For now, Teddy is winning😤

If the email he sent you above matches the email address associated with the Paypal account you sent the money to, show this to Paypal. In it he states he already sent you a refund.

  • WQuarterFreddieWQuarterFreddie Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭✭✭

Nope. The email for the PayPal account is different too. I missed so many warnings! I was in a hurry and really didn't notice any of it until I saw others posting about him.

Hindsight truly is 20/20 because there were so many warning signs and I missed them all until I looked back at everything 😩

That being said I do plan to mention his email that he claims to have refunded my payment. Hopefully PayPal will accept it as documentation. 🤞

I posted in BST awhile back looking for specific semi-numismatic bullion from 2007. A month ago I discovered the exact same post copy and pasted from a different account. There are numerous scams going on with these message boards; I am surprised at how vulnerable members make themselves without knowing it.

Just tell the scammer to send you the coin prior to paying for it and never deal with a non-forum member third party stranger. It's always dangerous buying from someone who is not a member of "The Circle of Trust."

I just got the following PM in response to one of my World coin BST wantlist items.

New user, registered August 24. I note the similar language and same last name as one of the earlier scam attempts posted above.

Glad I had already read this thread. The old "hey, this third party has one" solicitation triggered my spidey-sense, though I've certainly got this thread to thank for that, as it might not have raised a red flag with me previously.

I just replied "thanks" to the PM, but obviously have no intention of emailing Anderson Owens or whoever that is.

I shall now flag this very post of mine so the mods will see it.

I got the exact same message this morning from JM33 to email Anderson.
    The fraudster is back.

I got scammed by the same person teddy. Good thing I pay with PayPal. It wasted my time but I got my money back. Don’t pay cash unless you know person otherwise also use card to pay.

  • RegistryCoinRegistryCoin Posts: 5,117 ✭✭✭✭

From my experience, PayPal is great to pay, but with a credit card. That way you can make a claim, if needed, through either PayPal or your credit card.

PayPal claims take a long time, while you prove your case.

Claims through credit cards almost always immediately go in the cardholder’s favor.
Simply call the number in your card. A person will assume your explanation is accurate, and money is refunded usually right away.
The credit card company will then investigate to confirm.

PayPal will subsequently send a notice saying they noticed you handled a claim through your credit card, and close out the transaction.

lots of time scam can be avoided if you pay more attention to the details. Same as buying on eBay. Paying attention to the details can avoid buying counterfeit items. I just bought a counterfeit medal. When I look back I should have known better. Well, another claim with eBay that will take another 20 days to get my money back. It just waste time. One more thing I want to add, don't just rely on 100% feedback to buy. Some 100% feedback sellers on eBay do sell counterfeit coins

  • Project NumismaticsProject Numismatics Posts: 1,579 ✭✭✭✭✭

He does send pics - he sent me pics lifted straight from a then-current Ebay listing. It was a relatively hard to find coin with only one EBay listing and therefore easy to tell.

No, but when I went to do that just now, I see that others have blown the bugle.

This incarnation of the snake is probably about to get mod-slain, but it's important for everyone to recognize the style and MO here, for when the scammer comes back under yet another new identity.

How did you pay? If it's PayPal, call them immediately. If by check, call your bank and tell them to stop payment.
