Only 6,879 minted with 887 believed to have been issued by the Confederacy after it seized the mint in April of 1861. Perhaps this is one of them? A beautiful and fascinating coin to admire. Thanks @coinlieutenant for another wonderful coin.

Very nice coin , perfect for the collection.
Congratulation
It would be very cool if there was information to see if if was struck by the rebels. Maybe there’s info like on the CSA half dollars.
Beautiful!

Great coin! I looked for a 1861-C half eagle for several years without success. Most are cleaned or really marked up. The piece you purchased is a rare exception.
A++
They certainly don't make them like that anymore................
Wonderful coin!

Really happy you got this, Jonathan. A very cool coin that will serve as a lovely centerpiece for an already great collection.
Given that there is only one die for this date, and die issues are present in only the later stages of die failure, and that the Confederate struck pieces are the last, I would put this piece as a maybe? Evidence of some crumbling at 4 oclock?
I've often wondered if the work has been done to explore how many examples extant have the die degradation of the total population as a proxy perhaps for when the die started to fail. Would be a fun numismatic project just to see if die failure was underway before April 20th, 1861.
On a shameless plug note, I have really moved forward on the website and my offerings, building a steady drumbeat of NEWPS every Thursday at 9 a.m. If anyone wants on this list, please email me and I'll add your email. And, if you want to work with me on building something great, shoot me a note and we can talk about goals and want lists on the phone.

My goodness that is a heck of a coin. I am happy to see it land in your hands.
Exceptional coin. I owned one of these in around the same grade once, decent, but not even close to as nice as this one.
I wonder where in the heck this one surfaced from.
Made it through the war without a scratch literally. Congratulations on a great acquisition.
Congratulations! That is an exceptional gold coin.
Awesome coin.
