The forum is a bit slow now that the latest eBay thread has wound down, so I thought I'd post a GTG of this recent acquisition. Grade posted lower in thread.

It has a good strike, which is typical of the 1853 o. It doesn’t look like it was struck with rusted dies which sometimes happened with gold O dollars. I could see the TPG giving it an AU 58. It sure looks nice to me. Great pickup!

mmmm, very attractive! I think I see some honest rub, so I'm going with 55 shot 58.

It's so nice looking I could see that as a 55+

This is a very tough call... First and gut reaction is AU58. However, in taking a closer look at the fields on both sides of the coin, a compelling argument could be cabinet friction as the fields look exceptional... especially the reverse. I am going with 62+

I will guess 58... I was initially thinking MS, but further study (perhaps too much ;) ) had me change my mind. Cheers, RickO

Just one quick observation... the $1 gold coin is 13mm and the image we are looking at (at least on my screen) is about 140mm... so the magnification is slightly greater than 10x.

Yup. At 13mm, the type 1 gold dollar is the smallest coin ever produced by the US Mint.

I was just the opposite, first glance 58+, but further study of the fields and coin facts put me in the MS.

Plenty of wear, but sure seems better than XF.

  • TurtleCatTurtleCat Posts: 4,600 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yeah, XF seems too low even though this issue is typically well struck. I would have assumed a gold CAC with that look. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’d reconsider it and upgrade bean it.

  • stevebensteveben Posts: 4,610 ✭✭✭✭✭

    wow, i definitely thought AU.

  • coinkatcoinkat Posts: 23,031 ✭✭✭✭✭

Seems an in hand look is really needed - if not required- on this one

XF :D seriously, what good does it do PCGS to undergrade coins?

  • ashelandasheland Posts: 23,110 ✭✭✭✭✭

    I was at 58, that's a solid coin!

  • FlatwoodsFlatwoods Posts: 4,122 ✭✭✭✭✭

I actually was being a little contrarian at 53 but it's better than XF.
I'd look at it this way.
Would I rather have the nicest 45 in the world or the worst 58?

  • FlatwoodsFlatwoods Posts: 4,122 ✭✭✭✭✭

    By the way.
I haven't checked the prices but a gold CAC may add more value than a regrade.

  • BillJonesBillJones Posts: 33,890 ✭✭✭✭✭

That appears to an under grade to me. The coin certainly has more detail than an EF-45 would be expected to have. There is only light wear on the highest parts of the hair detail, and much of that detail is still intact.

Perhaps someone thought it had been dipped and net graded it. The color is on the light side for an old piece of gold.

This 1853-O gold dollar is graded PCGS graded MS-62. The color is more like what you would expect from a coin of this vintage.

That coin is too small for JA to examine that's why it's not gold beaned ;);)<3

I wouldn't have it regraded. Might consider a sticker review if I ever decided to sell, but that's probably a long way off. Meanwhile, the coin kind of speaks for itself. B)

You should do all the O-mint dollars just like that. I enjoy mine quite a bit . It is a doable and cheap short set of southern gold .
    A 40 for comparison

Certainly would invite that one in if it knocked on my door.
