I just purchased this from Heritage. I realized that when I first started, this coin would have been considered a "modern" (and I was a YN). I presume that is no longer the case ... which is somewhat sobering. Anyway, its PR 66 RD with a CAC sticker.
This may have been struck for the death of camp commander Brevet Major General Henry Goddard Thomas in 1897. He also served the Union in the Civil War.
Classic commems...just when I thought I was OUT, they pull me back in...

"1876" 1776 Liberty Bell - Mining Tools Medalette - by George Bache Soley - Raw
This is a gold-dollar sized piece I recently ran across for the first time and picked up for my Soley collection.
He likely struck this one in the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia like he did other tokens with the Liberty Bell die, often pairing it with his Lord's Prayer die and Independence Hall die.
I've never seen this one before and was happy to pick it up. Anyone else ever see this particular piece or any piece with the mining tools die?
I posted this previously when I purchased it but received it from DLRC today. It's just stunning. I just wish my photography skills were up to the task.

The following isn't mine but shows how it was often fitted. Note that the two pieces have the same two die cracks on the obverse.

Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
I’ve gotten into medieval coins. A lot of them have saints on them as this piece with St Paul holding a sword.
Apparently the saints were often portrayed with the instruments of their martyrdom!

That’s a great provenance!
I saw the ANS sell their holdings of these.
Did you get a COA? You should try to get the provenance noted by a TPG.
