Looks like there are 2 1997 Topps chrome basketball hobby boxes in stock @ $325 each...these would be a fun and potentially rewarding rip at less than $15 per pack

  • pjb103183pjb103183 Posts: 1,330 ✭✭✭

Not sure of the difference in contents, but there are also 3 retail boxes available @ $250 each

  • I assume Steve at BBCE can still not wrap any of the individual packs in his BBCE wrapping? Still not possible even for multiple pack purchases? that is a big selling point for pack collectors and I would certainly buy many more packs if that was possible. No exception he can get from PSA for these group breaks? Would love some of those 80-81 basketball packs wrapped.

Also...I am interested in the 1997 chrome basketball boxes too.
Also the 2000 football boxes that have Brady---those are relatively cheap on a per pack basis
Also some of the 1996 basketball boxes with Kobe rookies
And the 2001 topps baseball boxes that have Pujols and/or Ichiro rookies... Those on a per pack basis are relatively cheap and good for a rip or for personal pack collection.

Also nice to throw in some 93 product with Jeter rookies----cheap packs and boxes--Score super packs, Topps, etc.

even some 90s junk wax boxes can be fun to open..--,

Steve cannot wrap individual wax or cello packs due to his contractural agreement with PSA.

I am 99.9% positive that the only packs Steve will wrap will be any rack packs that are purchased. He cannot wrap packs that PSA grades. If you get a nice 80-81 pack (especially if you get the prize with Bird Magic) I would say subbing the pack to PSA would be a no brainer. As for your other suggestions, I would definitely be happy to request more boxes. I am not a big BB or FB collector though, so you would have to make the recommendation as to what product you want. Go to the website and then PM me or post on here your specific request and we can go from there.

I am open to adding the 97 Topps Chrome BK boxes. They will have the possibility of Tim Duncan and Tracy McGrady RC's. I am guessing the difference in hobby vs retail for that product is simply the number of cards you receive and the number of refractors. I will see what I can find out.

    Bird/Magic pack showing!

Vote is noted. If anyone else is looking at the 80-81 packs, please vote, regular box or Bird Magic Box. For $26/pack more, my vote is also for the Bird Magic box. Steve has pulled both boxes for now but he would like to know by the end of the day which box we want so he can put back the other. Get your votes in. Right now it is 3-0 for Bird Magic.

Can someone clarify if the wrapped 80s football cases are not FASC? I don’t think they are but if Steve is confident the contents are original, that’d be good enough for me.

I talked to Steve and the 80s FB are unfortunately not FASC. I asked if he thought they were original cases that just happened to be opened and he said he could not confirm that one way or another.

    Good job on the discount.

Let's go for the Bird/Johnson showing box.

Provided nobody has done so already, I would like to request the aforementioned pack.

So it is now 4-0 for the Bird Magic box. You will have a 1/36 chance for every $185 you spend :)

Steve, I’m in for the 80-81 bk stars showing wax but I’d be interested in a head count for how many buys so we know if there is a realistic chance to fill that order. I’m open to other considerations. My main hope is that we get a large number of folks participating.

We will have an announcement of when the break commences once the list of items is finalized with Steve. I will give at least 24 hours notice so that everyone has a fair chance to log in and see the start time. Spoiler alert!! I am hoping the start time will be either this coming Sunday or Monday night. We are probably looking at sometime between 5:00-6:00 PM so it is not too late for East Coasters, but the West Coast guys can log in after or at the end of work. I will start a new thread when the break goes live for reservations!!!

Agreed. I am trying to get some variety. I think the rips are fun when you have some lower dollar packs that include all budgets and encourage more people to join and also rip! But I still like the higher dollar ones too, stuff that may be ripped or kept unopened as a rare, cool collectible part of an unopened collection.

In in for Bird/Magic box. I'll take several packs if we can't fill it up. That's about the only break I'd do. I could be arm twisted for the 76 football, but it would be a one-off for me.

    Collecting PSA 9's from 1970-1977. Raw 9's from 72-77. Raw 10's from '78-'83.

I think this is spot on. The right combination of higher value and lower value packs will help bring more people into the break to participate which is the goal of any group break. I think we should also implement per pack and per box maximums for at least the first 24-48 hours so that everyone has a chance to reserve the items they want. Maybe 2-3 packs for any box break and 1 box for any case break.

Yes, this break will follow breaks of the past where there will be limits for the first 24 and then 48 hours on packs and boxes. The limits will depend on the product and the quantities, but your numbers are in line with what to expect. The goal is to make this as much fun for as many collectors as possible!

I just updated the first post with what is currently reserved for us. I think it is a pretty good product mix. I do plan on adding more product to the mix, but I don't want to have Steve reserve a bunch of stuff and end up not filling the breaks. So I really need input from the group on what products they want and I will go to bat for them with Steve. I definitely think we are light on FB and BK so I will add more on my own if there is not a groundswell for anything with those. For BB I think we have room for some more as well. Golf seems pretty well represented, lol. But hey, the vocal minority will be heard! The 80-81 BK box looks like it will be the headliner. Right now the Bird Magic box is leading the vote in a landslide. If that box fills though, we can always add the regular box if there is enough demand.

There was a set of group break rules that developed over time that promoted inclusivity and fairness. They could always use a review, but I suggest you copy them from one of the old group break threads and start from there.

It’s great to see the excitement of a group break ramping up here on the board again!!! Collecting together is one of the truly great things that is possible in our hobby. It would be a shame if any of this was tarnished by forgetting what we’ve learned about providing good advance notice, having reasonable start times (taking into account time zone differences), limiting requests for specific products per time periods and making sure that the “biggest fish” aren’t getting full boxes leaving not enough individual packs for the “little fish”

The most important thing we did was start a completely new thread for the break ahead of time and requiring all requests to be posted in the new thread GOING BY THE POSTED TIMESTAMP IN THE THREAD. That prevents anyone, including the break organizer, from getting the “jump” on anyone else. If you post before the official start time as indicated by the system-generated timestamp in the post, not you own computer, then your request is no good.

Looking forward to a great break.

My vote on the 82 donruss is to bypass the vote and issue an executive order.

Luckily, it seems we have another landslide with 82 Donruss. Don't worry, when the time comes for an executive order, I will be ready ;)

    74 and 76 football

We have the 76 FB Cello on the slate already. I would be happy to request the 74 if we have sufficient interest. Anybody else looking for 74 FB?

Steve L, if Steve H is willing to release the 2014 UD SP hobby case (golf), we're 2/3 of the way there already

I think I already requested this. May have forgot to post in the list.
