Los Angeles to San Diego is under a red flag warning for high fire potential. That's a lot of real estate and people.

You and your family all survived "the deadliest fire in California history", unharmed. You have the support of friends and family and even people who don't know you and who you never met. Recovery won't be easy but each step that you take going forward will make things better. Happier times are ahead. Hang in there and keep moving forward.

Can they arrest you for trespassing on your own property?? Or is it sneaking in the back roads that is the tricky part?

I'm not sure I would be as patient as you are. I think I would be the squeaky wheel a couple times a day till I got my property.

Glad to hear you guys are hanging in there. Stay safe.

How bout squeaky wheel to where they throw you outta the Sheriffs department? That’s how squeaky this wheel is. Then I hear that if ya got a buddy affiliated with PG&E, who started the damn fire, well then, you get a pass through the town lines. So! If anyone from PG&E land out there reading this that can get me past the town lines in Paradise I will sure make it worth your while to take a day off and hang out with me . Or, just get me in. You bet I’ll give you a good ol tip. Just as long as I can open my safe I’ll give you a very nice reward. Just because I’m looking under rocks for a way to get to my safe.

So sorry to hear that Joe. I couldn't sit still for more than an hour without trying to figure out a way to get to my property. I hope you can get back up there sooner rather than later.

Seems like some good news feed there. If you expose the favoritism and restricting your rights to access your property to the public, then possibly they will be forced to let everyone in.....

Don't get upset or demanding to the point of getting thrown out. That is the easy way to be told no and to leave. But I would be a real nice old concerned man. So nice and concerned that no one could get mad at you. Maybe act a little confused so they have to re-explain why. A visit or two a day to see how progress is going and what steps are being made to allow a resident man see his property. Go in for a five minute talk but stretch that five minutes out to thirty if you can by being nice and personable and very concerned.

I am sure that with thousands of residents wanting the same thing that they would be overwhelmed if they started escorting each person in. But maybe they might occasionally grease a nice old annoying wheel?? Is there an officer friendly that is more empathetic to visit with?

Sounds real frustrating, keep calm, don't get upset or pointing fingers about others. I don't know what would work or what is a waste of time but I do know, if you get too exciting or demanding it is easy to be asked to leave. If you are nice and confused, it is a little more difficult to get kicked out without them trying to take time to explain things to you. Of course this is also dependent on the personality and overriding directive of the deputy you are talking with. Keep trying and good luck! Just don't be calling me for bail money ;)

Don’t get me wrong. I was the nice old man. I was gentle but at the same time very persistent. I have nothing but respect for law enforcement officers. I would never go in there and jump up and down insisting that I get served. They didn’t kick me out it was more like we are done and there’s nothing we can do to help you.
It’s just a hard pill to swallow that if you have a buddy in PG&E you can get past the town lines and that was the point I was trying to make. You have no idea the frustration this has caused. Right now it’s raining, hard. Depending on which way my safe is sitting will determine if it fills up with water or not. My entire collection is in there.
    Yes frustrating.

I would sneak in after midnight to at least cover the safe with black tarp to prevent future damage .... or better yet 'bury' it after it is covered.

Yes a very high rating. I’m more than sure that what’s in there did not burn. Depending on the way it’s sitting will determine how much water it’ll take on. I’m hoping for the best .

Joe, if and when you are allowed in, maybe take a uhaul and rent a wrecker to lift the safe and put it in the uhaul along with anything else that survived from your properties. It maybe nearly impossible to open it without some assistance and that might be hard to come by the day you are allowed in. Best of luck, my friend.

It would be much easier to rent a trailer than trying to finagle it into the back of a box truck....of course if U-haul rents pick up trucks that's a different story!

If it were me I would hire a flatbed tow truck. He could winch it on the trailer and go!

Uhaul here in WV rent trailers(open and closed), pickup trucks, and box trucks. I would think they would there also, but then that's me.

I have an idea, buddy! I'll head over to the airport in town and steal one of those little Cessnas, first I have to figure out which one is actually a Cessna and then learn how to fly it. Then I'll swoop down and you can parachute out of my plane and onto your property, assuming I haven't crashed the plane into something else by then. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. That way you don't have to walk over any of that nasty weed killer.

In all seriousness, I sure hope you get to go back soon. What a joke.

Why not just steal a helicopter? ;)

I very strongly believe that a crew should be "licensed" to go in and pick up safes for residents who request it. A big flatbed truck, a crane - just pick up a safe and deposit it on the truck and on to the next one. No rummaging, no poking around, just targeted pickups of previously identified safes. It is inconceivable to me that they do not allow this. There are safes bursting with coins, jewelry, cash, guns, etc., just sitting there with nothing to stop looters or even an organized crime rings impersonating some of the chosen few who are allowed to enter the zone.

Just talked with PJHelicopter in Chino and your assessment is correct on this type of recovery.

Several County and Federal agencies permits are needed before they can dispatch such a recovery flight as well as FAA clearance permit for "fly-over" if the recovered item (safe) should be in their possession to take back

To avoid FAA special requirement; she suggested the best way is to hover; recover and lifting the safe then place it over a lowbed pickup truck while over the property.
The weight of the safe is required for them to determine what type of helicopter thus the price.

The problem right now is no commercial companies are allowed in the area .... ground or/and air.
..... so CHD may have a better chance getting there first before we hire this pro.

Thx PF for jumping on it and getting some valuable details!

I am thinking that a huge flatbed like the kind used to haul concrete forms (pipes, septic tanks, etc.) with a built-in crane might be best. I have seen these on the highways so I know they exist. ;) Or, a helicopter to lay the safes in the back of a pickup truck...

The idea would be that only one approved team would go in - no residents or family to slow things down or disturb the ruins that might still need to be searched for remains.

I am sure it is all more easily said than done, but it drives me crazy to think of what little is left for the residents is still off limits.

Fireproof but not waterproof?? I would think if it’s not waterproof then heat could get in and damage the contents despite the safe itself not burning. Hope not but that popped into my head.

Yes I already have some pics and I can see my 2 safes my woodstove and a few other items that didn’t burn. It’s tough to look at it. I lived 28 years in that house, raised my kids there.

The level of suffering here for Californians is off the charts, I just hope that the good people charged with doing the restorations are successful. My brother had a house fire a couple weeks ago and as traumatic as it was, his bases are all covered and his family have a lot of good connections for social, emotional and economic support.

Now that you mentioned it, it just did. I do believe we have found a home we can lease for a year and that’s ya a huge shot in the arm for us :)
It’s an hour and ten minutes away from ground zero but trust me when I say it’s very difficult as everyone is doing the same thing we are, looking for a house to rent/lease. We gotta get out of these hotel hell. We have been bouncing all over Northern California.

Great! Getting a semi-permanent place to live will be a big relief and one less thing to worry about so you can focus on the rebuilding.
