Re: Coin Shops in Old Lyme CT area
Heh. I live in SE Connecticut as well and work in the Old Lyme area. (Off of Exit 71; Kendle International). I can attest to the lack of any real coin shops. This area just completely dried up in regards to sports card shops and coin shops. There used to be plenty of them in the Groton area a mere 10 years ago, but now… -

Re: Just some notes to consider
<<Coinguy; I think he said he subtracted the shipping fees when he came to his total. Also he still has another coin. I don't know what that one coin is worth but that is more excluded profit. This may not be the best example and there may well be times when it is easier and more profitable to sell to a dealer. However,… -
Re: My new 1922 & 1928 Canadian nickels
<< <i>A little baggy, but nice luster and original color. Just curious. Is one able to find early 20th century Canadian with clean surfaces? (i.e. MS65+)? >> MS65s ?? Maybe. MS65+ (as in a true MS66), not likely. Here is a breakdown of Can. 5c pieces from 1922 - 1930 (including '26 Far/Near). 53 20 55 79 58 185 60 7 61 15… -
Re: Any thoughts on machines to sort 95% copper cents from circulation?
<< <i>laws Best bone up on the current laws & regulations of US coins. >> Well that prevents China from backing up barges in our ports to buy our copper at a discount! I am talking more of the hoarding/collecting aspect of it and the trading of copper cents as bullion. There have been some recent sells of copper cents as a… -
Re: 1957 and 1958 Proof Jefferson Nickels.
RE: 1957 and 1958 Proof Jefferson Nickels. I have often wondered why it is so hard to find these coins in the typical Cameo contrasted state that the Mint had finally sort of perfected. I have a theory or line of thought that is simple --- the Mint worker(s) who were responsible for preparing and re-working the dies… -

Re: Antoninus Pius (New pictures and writeup)
Nice aureus, better than mine. Antoninus Pius is not well known. The last major book about him was published in 1895. The Reign of Antoninus Pius by E. E. Bryant, B.A. Thirlwall Dissertation, 1894, Cambridge University From the preface: It is a noteworthy fact that hitherto no attempt has been made to produce an exhaustive… -
Re: Why do Ken Griffey Jr. cards sell for so much ?
My point wasn't to say that Mantle and Griffey were equal. My point was that popularity drives demand and thereby prices. Your NYC point just supports my popularity argument. Furthermore, my point 1B was that, based on HOF credentials alone, there's no reason other than popularity/demand that the Mick so greatly outsells… -
Re: Bill James on Dewey Evans and the HOF
Thanks digicat, your numbers seem to agree with mine. Yaz had a couple of monster years with OPS+ of 177 and 193. Other than that, the numbers are VERY VERY close to being equal, with Yaz having the third highest with a 170 but Dewey comes in with a 162 they tie with 156's and again with 148's, Dewey with a 147, Yaz…
