There is Coins and Collectables Plus on the Post Road in Orange and Valley Coins in Seymour. I don't know of anything in Old Lyme since I live in Trumbull but Valley Coins has a great selection and if you don't see what you want just ask and he'll gladly pull stuff out of the safe for you. Hope I helped a little.

I'm from CT. What town are you visiting? Try to get to Foxwoods or the Mohegan Sun!

I am not sure about coin shops in the area, though. Did you check the PCGS and NGC authorized dealers list?

Capstick-- what types of coins does Valley Coins have?

I also never heard of that store in Orange. I used to go to Marty's Stamp and Coin on the Post Road, but have not been there in years.

I will be in Old Lyme (shore) and Deep River.

I used to live in Guilford, so I know the Guilford Coin exchange.

I will be goin to the SUN, I have always preffered it over foxwoods.

Longacre, Valley Coins has mostly US coins slabbed and raw. He does deal a little in foreign though. He seems to have a good combination of high end coins as well as the stuff I shop for which is raw US coins. He does have a good selection of both raw and slabbed.

I just stopped by Martys today as a matter of fact. Had never been there before so I decided to stop. Was it the size of a shoebox when you went there?

The store(Coins and Collectables Plus) may have just opened a few months ago. Not a very big selection but decent slabbed coins.

    Cap--

That's funny about Marty's. I used to go there as a pre-teen with my cousin every Saturday morning. It was the same shoebox size then too! He is a nice guy, but a little odd. He used to carry a lot of gold, but when I was in there last, he didn't have any. I have to check out that new store in Orange the next time I stop by Golfer's Warehouse. Also, you should try Sam Sloat in Westport. They have higher end stuff, as well as less expensive stuff (mostly slabs).

I live in southern CT, I can also recommend a little place called AJ Coins in West Haven. Not sure what you're after exactly, but he does have a little higher end stock and he's just a nice guy - he'll talk your ear off all afternoon if you let him. The Guilford Coin Exchange is also a good stop, I've only been to the new shop in Orange once and found them very pleasant but a little thin on material.

Thanks to whoever mentioned Valley Coins as I didn't know about them, I may have to pop in there some Saturday.

That was me that mentioned Valley. No problem. Wish I had known some many people live in CT on the boards. We should get together for Sundays New Haven show.

Longacre: Yeah he seemed a liitle off but he had a nice selection of raw coins. I didn't see any slabbed coins there though. I did stop by Sam Sloat and they had a very good selection of both raw and slabbed stuff. Decently priced like you said.

Seanq: I'll have to check out AJ coin some Saturday also. The guys name at Valley is Ed. Very knowledgeble. Almost seems like he has a photographic memroy sometimes. He can just rattle off figures and stats like no ones business.

Funny you mentioned Marty's. Early in my collecting I got tired him
grading everything MS65 (gem) and charging full load for it (this was 1976-1980). When I finally found out he never bought back his own stuff....at least not for anywhere near the grade/price you paid....I moved on....never to go back. Haven't been back in that shoe box in over 25 years.....and I only live an hour from there.

I live in SE Conn. area and can tell you there is a great lack of quality coins in my home area. Jeff's coins in Norwich (near the Casinos) is new and he might be willing to deal. He's located near the Backus Hospital at the end of Rt 2. Take a left and he's just a block or two away. But you won't find any luck at the 2 shops in New London and Niantic/East Lyme finding anything decent though you are welcome to stop in at them.

Since you know Guilford coin already, that is the best spot along Eastern CT. Steve has a great selection of coins, but he is often hesitant to show them. He gets hit up by area dealers all the time looking to score. And Steve has plenty of neat coins believe me...including slabbed draped bust.

Of all the shops in SE CT I would only think of going to Jeff's or Guilford coin if I was looking to find something and have a chance of buying it right.

Heh. I live in SE Connecticut as well and work in the Old Lyme area. (Off of Exit 71; Kendle International). I can attest to the lack of any real coin shops. This area just completely dried up in regards to sports card shops and coin shops. There used to be plenty of them in the Groton area a mere 10 years ago, but now there seems to be nothing. If memory serves me right, in downtown Niantic on route 156 there is a little shack that has a sign out front which mentions coins and coin supplies. I'm not sure how good they are, but it's really the only shop I know of. (It's near the McDonalds and Cinemas down there).

BTW, this is completely off-topic, but one of my bosses lives in Deep River and his father will be in the area. The fact that you mentioned Old Lyme and Deep River is making me wonder. You aren't by chance coming from Pennsylvania, are you?

There is only one BIG monthly show in Ct. and thats the second Sunday show. The third Sunday show is very small. And the Hartford show only runs a few times per year. The New haven show has 50+ tables and is sold out this month. It runs at the Annex Club from 9-2:30. Clickherefor more info.

    Thanks all for the input-

Yes I have bought alot from steve in Glfd, but didn't want to let the secret out.

I was in NC for 5 years, but recently moved to Northern Jersey. (Where everyone asks "why would you leave there to come here? most people go the other way!)

(An to 1960 NYG I've had seasons tickets since just after the Yale Bowl days)

I would like to get out to the NH show, but all depends on my ability to ditch the family (+ the outlaws)

Mike, it's in a strip mall on the north side of the street, across from Camilo's Tuxedoes. The fellow has one large display case full of coins and afew more tucked away. Nice guy. Worth a drive by if you're in the area.

You're right about AJ. Don't get him started on the Korean War, in which he served. Or if you do, bring some popcorn.

The best-kept secret is Eagle Coin on Park Street off Campbell Ave. in West Haven. The old guy there, Joe, must be about 80 and has been collecting since he was a boy. He'll tell you of a time in the late 1930s when he saw two dozen 1916-D Mercs at once. And how he collected his best stuff in Italy during WW II. Interesting guy, though his grading to me leaves something to be desired. He's always willing to make a deal. He runs the business out of his house. If you stop by, bring him and his wife a couple of donuts and coffee--they will show their appreciation.
