<< <i>Whoever I was standing next to at Mike's booth in Baltimore, a belated hello! Darrell I think you were one of the culprits.
Between Mike, Arnie Heller and Glenn Holsonbake, I was in barber overload...Nahh!!! can't happen.
>>
LOL! I didn't have any Barber 1/2's!0 -
It was great seeing all of you Barberites - and
I was sorry many of you didn't make the BCCS
Meeting this afternoon.
It was a very worthwhile meeting and was a
refresher course for some and it held a wealth
of information for the novices.
It opened my eyes to help me with the ANA Summer
Seminar that Glenn Holsolbake and I are co-hosting.
I have a few newps to post - and only the Barber
Collectors who came to Darrell, Arnie's and my table
were able to check them out.
I noticed a trend withnBarber collectors I spoke with
today, seems Seated Liberty Quarters are very much
in Vogue now. Tough set and very exasperating not counting
how expensive a series that will turn out.
Arnie is heading out to an Illinois show tomorrow so he's
vacating a case which I will have no trouble filling.
Please stop by table 310 and say hi to Darrell and I.
It was great to have finally met you Leon, and Justin,
it's always a pleasure to see you again, and imwas glad your
friend heeded my advice on buying the 1886 Nickel. Walt,
always a pleasure too. As it was with you, Carl.
Had a great meal with Broadstruck and Kaz this evening.
Now, it's time to retire with my favorite beverage, Jameson.

My Mega Barber Thread Contribution. I found this in my pile of "Junk Coins". I was photographing a bunch of coins(Mercury Dime Varieties Of Course) so I decided to grab this one while I was at it just for the sole purpose of participating in this thread. I hope I got the grade right...I'm sure you all well let me know if I didn't.

Boy Greg, you won't stop at anything to get more posts than me.
That is quite a Barber Half you have there!

Most of my photos of XFs turn out looking less fetching than that G4 08-0, so count me as envious of your imaging skills.

To Mike's point about Barber fans going for Seated Quarters: I admit to having flirted with them despite not much caring for the Seated design as a whole. The reason I think may be rooted in our quest or enchantment with the "Big Three" Barber quarters. We are drawn to these low mintage San Francisco issues, and see comparable SQ S-mint quarters within the same pressing numbers that are actually much scarcer, yet up until recently, sell for far less. It's a value play, in my opinion. One could grab a VG 64-s and have a much scarcer coin than an 01-s in VG.We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.0 -
My only win at Stacks Bowers auction...

The coin dances in the light and has a fully proof like finish and the devices are frosted
and, yes, I fully plan on having it professionally imaged.

Gee...it's horrible that's all you could win!

What a trophy that 97s is.
That frosty look with color is amazing.
Congrats.We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.0 -

It almost eerie, but another Barber Half collector mentioned to me today that he's seriously
thinking of selling his collection off [ very solid Mid to High End VF set ] in order to persue
a collection of Seated Quarters !! Too funny !!

To that collector: prior to making such an irrevocable decision to sell a nice Barber Half set for Seated Quarters, do a forum search "Seated, Roadrunner" and read every post he's written on the subject of the quarter series. Brain food. We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.0

Mike, that 97-S has a strike that is absolutely hammered!
I want to extend an invitation to any of the serious barberphiles that read this thread to consider joining the Barber Collector's Society. You get quarterly journals, a chance to contribute to the journal, and there are regional and national shows where gatherings occur. Just received the latest journal yesterday. You can also buy many of the back issues which are full of great articles. Many of the posters on this site are already members. (end of shameless plug).Dr. Pete0 -

Dogwood, I think you could have figured out who is possibly selling their Barber Halves if you look at some older PMs - particularly concerning someone not jumping at the chance to acquire a 1905-o in 35. So, while I appreciate MFH keeping me anonymous concerning the sale, it is not necessary. I have completed, broken down, revamped and refocused the Barber Half set so many times over the last 5+ years that it is just time to do it again. I felt, for the last year or so, a bit Ancient Mariner-esque. I was just buying coins to complete the set because of the specific grade and dates required to do so. Plus, I would never have been able to buy a 1904-S in 35 anyway, because I think it is grossly overpriced - not 01-S quarter gross, but similar.
But, I don't really follow why you suggest reading Roadrunner's posts on Seated Quarters. Could you elaborate on that?0 -
<< <i>Most of my photos of XFs turn out looking less fetching than that G4 08-0, so count me as envious of your imaging skills.
>>
Thanks dogwood...but you know what's funny, I'm getting ready to have ALL of my core collection imaged by someone else!
I think I do just fine when having to image something for sale or discussion on the forums but for the presentation of my collection, I'm just not there yet.

Wow, you didn't even cross my mind. Your remarkable quarter set is well established. I could see why some of those last vacant places could be fed with Barber meat. (ouch! Did I say that?)
I assumed a little under such a bar, for someone who hasn't had a dog in that fight for such time.
RR posts are endless, well constructed histories of data regarding dates of the Seated Quarter series that are one man's observations and opinions that I have hard copied and refer to often. Highly recommended reading.
And with that, more dodgy images from my latest submission:

Well, Greg, looks like the cat is out of the bag now.
I hope my insights into the disposition of your
Barber Half collection were helpful.
Although we only met once last November at
Baltimore, and you bought my Newp 1894-P
before I even had a chance to see it in my set,
I had hoped you'd continue to fine tune your set.
As you realize, not all 35's are the same... Putting
Together a set evenly matched is hard enough, let
alone an evenly matched set all in the same grade...
Just not gonna happen. Remember Craig's XF 45 set ?
Coins were all graded 45 - but were 40 to 53 in actuality.
Good luck - please keep me in the loop as to your set.

Sorry to hear about another Barber collection up for sale. Good luck as you move forward.
dogwood, even with the dodgy images, I still like that 02-S.
0 -
Dennis - I am wondering what the verbal description is on that 02-S.
The coin looks like a nice one - but I can't say without certainty that
its an AU 55. The small image seems too dark - and doesn't compare
with the larger images.
Here's the 02-S I picked up at January's S/B auction - in PC 45:

Oh, I just picked this up from Glenn this afternoon. Its a duplicate:

Same coin. The thumbnail of the slab was just hastily cropped from a group shot taken with an iPhone in natural room light.
Full cartwheel luster both sides, believe it or not.

I submitted this NGC coin to PCGS while I was at the Baltimore Convention.
I asked a number of dealer friends how they would grade it [ I had the sticky
label over the NGC grade ].
I got a wide variety of responses - some as high as MS 63 - some as low as 45.
How would you grade this [ or - did I already spill the beans in a previous post
]
0 -
Stuck for sure this time...
Here's an old image ...
0 -
I believe you already spilled the beans on that coin already, Mike. If I remember correctly it is in a 50 holder in that picture.0
-
Log Potato it was great to meet you and spend a few minutes chatting. Glad I could help out with a couple of those newps!
0 -
This date just in from the House, which has been hard to come by for me.
Moderately lustrous, especially the reverse, but I'm not able to skill it up in image form.
I'm really a fan of the subtle toning, even at the expense of it's flash factor.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.0 -
Dennis,
I bet you're a happy camper !!
Sweet looking coin. Finding a 53
just isn't that easy, as you can attest to !
Nice pick up... Looking forward to see
"the others" ...
Justin... Sorry it's not a 50... Don't be looking it up now
and reporting the "correct" NGC grade. You had your one
guess.
0 -
Dogwood,
That's a great 01-S half. Looks like original skin and nice subtle toning, but not too dark. That is a really tough date, a premium quality example (if sold at auction would bring WAY more than any list). That coin is NICE!Dr. Pete0 -
Anyone see the post of the 1912 Half that was a double die clash ?
There is a thread about it and I've asked the OP to repost the image here.
Should he not be able to, I will. I think all serious Barber collectors should
have a chance to see it, if they missed the other thread.
It's the strongest die clash I have ever seen on any Barber.0 -
These two coins are basically unique - one for the date - and the other for the denomination.
I didn't trust any shipping venue to deliver the coins - so I hand delivered them to Todd Pollock
to image them for me. Todd had mentioned that he was going to be in Baltimore and as I am
only attending a few shows a year now, it was a perfect opportunity to get my prized errors
professionally imaged.
The 1895-O Dime is unique for the date [ and mint ] and was purchased from Andy Lustig last
November - almost at the insistance of my good friend, Broadstruck.
The 1898 Quarter is unique for the entire series of Barber Quarters - and I have wanted that
coin for years but it wasn't until Pittsburgh last Fall that I opted to finally grab it from Andy.
Just a side note - I thought I liked the Brockage Reverse to be turned - so it looks like Lady Liberty is looking at herself.
Great job, Todd. Many thanks.

Ladies & Gentlemen:
Having touched and viewed the 1898 Barber Quarter obverse die cap and brockage piece I can honestly say images will never do it justice. It is INCREDIBLE Mike! I know a beautiful Barber Quarter date set where it would shine.

I was updating my Registry sets this morning and plugging in info on
different newps - and I noticed one of my newps had a True View image...

Thought this 1896-O could easily slip into the next grade...

No wonder CAC gave it a Green Bean...
EX: airplanenut
I thought I'd show how close the grading is on this series...
Here's a nice XF 40 I own ... I think it just makes 40 myself: [ sorry no holder images ]

and another I own... PCGS 30... a little too light grey for my tastes however - yet, a nice coin none the less:

I think the 35 CAC coin is a touch nicer than the 40 ... any one else share this opinion ?
------------------------------------
Edit:
Just picked up two newps :
1905-S & 1907-O - both PCGS 45 -
Images to follow.

Dropped to page 8.
No one doing Barbers anymore?
Yesterday, in between my checking newly listed Halves on eBay at 11:15 and 11:30am, a 97-o Half NGC AU53 BIN'd for $1099. SNAP!
What possessed me to do so, but I vow to never check complete listings ever again. We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.0 -
Have bought a couple in the past week or so. I'm just mainly waiting on my submission to come back.0

I always check out the new listings - but usually just the PCGS coins... I got to start looking at all the new listings, now !!
So... When the 97-O in NGC 53 comes home to roost, please image it ( & don't say your images stink... They don't )
Now... I need to see if I can look up that "completed sale" for myself to see that kind of a rip you got.
Edit: I just looked it up and it's a bit brighter than you like. Coin's images are not the best. Nice coin for
the price. Crack er out and resubmit to PCGS.
Pm sent, Dogwood.

Justin: I have two Econony submissions at PCGS now for 20 Barber Halves.
A couple of cross overs and the rest raw coins.0 -
It WASN'T ME!
only saw it on completed (sold) listings.
It sold the few minutes it came up between my views. And again, what possessed me to check completed listings is still a mystery. We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.0 -
I guess I misread your post - I thought you said you
bought it - and knowing your taste in toned coins - the
NGC was sure a bit too bright ... to say the least .
Now - there is nothing wrong with thise image -
that Dogwood took a few weeks ago... Looking
forward to its inclusion in my set:

That 98-O looks killer.0
-
Thanks, Justin. It's a really nice coin.
Recently, I sold off my 1898-O in PCGS Secure
MS 64 - which was part of my better set auctioned
off last August. It didn't hit reserve back then - but
it sold for close to what I originally paid.
This XF 40 replaces the other circulated one I have,
a very nice PCGS 30 and a back up of PCGS 15.

Was a ANACS AU/53, now in a PCGS AU/53.
