I think its fascinating how worn 16-D dimes tend to be. Think how FAST they'd all be taken out of circulation if ANYTHING like that happened today image

Exactly. If it gets BBd for added mintmark, its going to come back BBd every time you submit it. This isnt something like "questionable color" its morecut and dried than that.

The mint mark is not worn enough to go along with the rest of the coin.

Soak the area in acetone and see of it comes off!

My 1st impression was the same as LanLord. If you have one of those 100x pocket microscopes...look for a seam at the base.

Interesting.... Any input as to the specific diagnostics that determined it was added?? Cheers, RickO

That "D" is on there with glue. Some of the glue is peeking out at the top, I think. I agree about soaking in acetone for kicks. Many (but not all) glues and cements will dissolve in the acetone, leaving the fake "D" to fall off. It's not worth more than melt anyway, so you've got nothing to lose.

That's what I was going to say, mintmark has way to much detail for such a worn coin, also there is an odd discoloration around the added mintmark.

I vote added mintmark. You can see an obvious light colored "shadow" around the 12:00 to 3:00 area around the mintmark, which also looks too nice compared to the surrounding detail.

  • Just an uneducated observation but the "serif"( I believe that's what they call the style of the font) on the "E" next to the mint mark in question looks allot like the style used at the Philadelphia mint for that year based on pictures I looked at in Coin Facts. The bottom of the "E" is rounded at the point, verses the pointed end on the 1916D.

It looks "glued on" to me. The central opening is not the right shape. Sorry if you got stuck with this one.

I vote soak it off with acetone, too.

I can't say this is an added mintmark for sure, but I do see the discoloration others are talking about. The discoloration is even evident in the larger photo. It starts at the top of the D (12:00) and goes around to the front of it (3:00)

Roger on the discoloration... and I agree, if glue, acetone will likely dissolve it. Be sure to cover the container you soak it in. Cheers, RickO

You can only see this by tilting the coin at a certain angle to see if the mint mark is sitting in a shallow depression. That would indicate the surrounding metal was moved to create the letter "D"

A good rule of thumb is to look around the outside of the mint mark. Do you see the lighter ring around the mint mark on the close-up picture? It goes all around the mark, and is a very different color then the surrounding area. That is the tip-off.

I'm with LanLord. My initial reaction was that the mintmark was not worn as much as the rest of the coin.
