What are your thoughts on this type of toning?

My personal opionion is that I like it, and I think it shows a level of orginality. What say you.

    Although it does show originality, I don't particularly care for thos type of toning.

    The coin is original, but the toning would not sell the coin to me. I'm neutral on it. I don't dislike it, but it does not get my pulse going.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    I like it, but could see why others don't or are neutral on it. It may lighten up a bit with some acetone.

    Super nice, coin looks PQ, pics appear to show dripping luster . If that were a Seated quarter it would go for premium money.

    Screams originality... but not attractive IMO.

    Looks original and a dip would make it look worse.

    And just to add something of value to the discussion here, let me explain:

    Take a look at the rims- the third side of a coin that never gets attention and from what little I see here speaks volumes.

    It looks original and fairly attractive to me personally, but I wouldn't pay a premium for it. The main thing is whether it appeals to you or not.

    I don't like it but I wouldn't dip it...I would just sell it to a collector who likes the look and purchase something more my speed.

    I kinda like it, but I don't know how much of a premium I'd pay over a less toned specimen. Probably not much more.

    Look at what you can see with respect to the rim. It has a dark color and was likely in an album. The rim for this coin leads me to believe the coin is original and has not been dipped. Had the coin been dipped, the rim would have an inconsistant look in terms of the level of color. The rim of a coin is important and is too often overlooked in evaluating a coin. This coin seems to be an example as to why collectors need to look at the rim -besides just for authentication purposes.

    There are those that want white and if they want white - buy white and leave this one for those that appreciate it for what it is. It may not be perfect and it is also may not the color that catches the eye, but the last thing the hobby needs is another dipped out 1932 quarter

    It's a touch on the "streaky" side for my liking, but I would prefer it over a dipped example.

    Is it any wonder why so many coins are played and messed around with in this
    hobby based on the replies to this thread that basically show why people do it
    to maximize their potential profit when it comes time to sell?

    This will not be a surprise, but I do not like it....not at all. This type of tarnish/dirt/residue is, to me, very unappealing. I can never equate this appearance to 'original surface', since, the accretion has affected the true original surface. Dipping would only make this coin look worse. Cheers, RickO

    I would rate that type of toning a slight negative in terms of eye appeal.

    It appears to be russet toning and I'm not a big fan of russet toning.

    I like it a lot...the toning and the skin and satiny luster suggests it was put in a kraft envelope and has not likely been molested

    As Ambro pointed out clearly, many, many times nicer than the rainbow stuff.

    Relics...is that '32 Washington in one of your ANACS graded flips? If so, what did they grade it?

    I like anything that hasn't been cleaned or dipped. I think it has an "individual" quality that most coins lack. I prefer my coins to have character, that they stand-out...for better or worse... and that is what this coin has. Empirically, I don't mind the toning...there are many more that I prefer above this one, but it's OK. I like the color...I'm a fan of russet toning.

    In your opinion. Aesthetics is an individual matter.

    Seems like different people have different definitions of "original" around here. Mine is
    generally a coin that hasn't been subjected to dipping or doctoring. That said, original
    coins vary tremendously in their eye appeal. I don't hate the coin in question, but I've
    seen several more attractive (original) examples of the date.
