Do you keep the "good ones"?

ambro51ambro51 Posts: 14,487 ✭✭✭✭✭
Every so often in my pocket change a coin pops up with stunning luster, crisp details...a few jeffs, dimes, a quarter here and there...some lincolns that look fresh and fairly spot free...

these get set aside, rather, tossed into any number of 'archival' little cans, jars, boxes etc etc I have laying around. Seems Ive been doing this for years...

nothing of course, ever comes of this. those wannabe MS67s still sit there. forever? probably......

do you have a 'good one' can going?

I used to be terrible about hoarding really nice pulls from circulation, but I was never good about storing them properly, so by the time I reached this point, at which I learned about grading and populations, most of my great finds had faded or had just enough dings that I would guess MS65 or 66 grades--nothing Earth-shaking.

I do hang onto coins with personal significance. Some are my first finds of a new design--i.e., the first Delaware statehood quarter I got in change from my favorite coffee bar across the street from my old medical school. Others are interesting novelties, such as a wheat cent I found on the driveway at the airport in Orlando right before getting on Disney's Magical Express, the bus ride to Disney World and my wife's and my tenth anniversary. (Where Disney is concerned, a bus can't just be a bus, and even a penny laying on the ground has to be charmingly and magically distinct!) As of late, I am hoarding wheat cents, since they've in the last year or two started popping up with increasing frequency.

I've done this too for years now. Anything that just looks way better than a "usual" coin. I guess I am looking at the really long term-not in my lifetime - kind of appreciation that might come from them by someone 20, 30, 40, who knows- maybe even 50 or more years from now. On a side note: About 8 or 9 years ago I started a savings program where if I would get a paper bill that was really crisp or even sequential, I would not spend it- it got saved. Did this for about 3 years maybe 4 had quite a nice collection or "stash" of about $1500 and all like brand new. It averaged out to about $10 a week. Used the money to buy a couple key coins. I did a similar thing with golden dollars when they came out and statehood quarters, too. Just as a way to save money systematically. I really enjoy when it starts to add up and just keep finding more jars, boxes or whatever to keep it all in. Whenever someone tells me they are not good at saving I recommend one of these methods, because they work for me. Most recently it's nickels- I just won't spend 'em.

Lots of bowls and jars of the stuff...the mantle has quite a collection.
I always save the Nat. Park quarters, they turn up so rarely around here, it's kind of fun to get one.

Yes, I have been saving eye-appealing coins from circulation since the late 1960's. Over the years, most of the halves have been sold, and many of the cents developed spots or fingerprints and were spent, but the nickels, dimes, and quarters still look good.

Not really as I don't get nice change haha. I do put aside copper pennies, coins with errors, and any older coins but most get dumped into a large jar that when full, is used for the family image

Tough to go wrong setting coins aside at face value, plus the kids enjoy shiny items for their piggy banks.

This week I found a gettysburg quarter in my pocket that sure looks flawless. Keeper.

I don't even look at my pocket change, never have. It's just a bunch of moderns that I have no collecting interest in. Any classics that are in there are usually well worn and again no interest. I prefer to leave stuff to others to find. I occasionally even salt the pot with wheat cents to help spur interest. All that said, if a silver coin ended up in my hand, I'd instantly notice it and pull it from the spending pile...
