    1845 is pretty clearly fake.

The 1872 is too dark to see on my ancient monitor (which is too dark despite having the brightness maxed out)... but strongly suspect.

Edit: let me amend that, since I can't see either very well considering the poor pictures and my poor monitor, so I'll just say the obverse of the 1845 throws up some red flags to me and leave it at that. I do not know for sure because of the aforementioned challenges.

Exactly. That was the main thing that triggered my red flags.

    It just looks wrong.

Yep I agree that both are fakes. The 1872 date placement is much too high.

Fake - look at the rims and no need to look further.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Both are fake. 1872 is clearly fake even with dark pictures.

He also has this fake up 1874

The 1872 has no motto so clearly a fake, as for the trade dollar he has up the date is to round or pillowy not sharp as well as rim is off. Personally I'm reporting these auctions.

the 1845 is another 'gashed shield' fake; the 1872 is motto-less but has numerous issues, like the rims.

It's still good to educate the other 25%. image

And sadly given my experience with many collectors I've met at the clubs over the years, I think that your 75% estimate is high. It might be 75% or more among the people who post on this board, but spread over the entire collector population, you would surprised at how little many collectors know about 19th century U.S. coins.

Yes, it looks like it's no good to me. Maybe that's why they keep photographing these things at the wierd angles.
