Looks AU to me. Lots of breaks in the luster, wear on the high points. Those hairlines on the cheek area aren't good either, possibly cleaned, possibly just from circulation though.

Sorry, the coin is not even Mint State let alone MS-63. It's an AU.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
OMG! Lighten up folks! Can you imagine anyone actually cleaning a coin with a brillo pad with the "special pink soap" just because they read about it on the forums? It is Friday! Maybe some of you could use a sense of humor for the weekend.

NO question is stupid, it just may be better to read the posts and find a member who you respect and send them a personal message with your questions. There are a lot of respectable members here that can help you without all the Fluff

Unfortunately yes. I'm sure it has happened. A lot of newbies read the forums and Internet search engines often find isolated comments out of context. Humor and sarcasm are difficult when facial expressions are missing. I'm sure more than a few newbies have done terrible things to their coins because some smart veteran forumite thought they were making a clever joke. Be careful what you write. If you must make such comments it is a good idea to add obvious disclaimers into the post such as <just kidding>.

Geez, what just happened? LOL Overreacting and humor...that's a coin forum for ya'
The coin is AU, as it shows signs of wear, and has been cleaned. An acetone bath wouldn't help this coin, but acetone baths can help other coins. It depends on what is on the coin/what it looks like. Killer26, if you have any questions on what coins you have that could use an acetone bath, don't hesitate to post them.
Killer, I don't think STONE meant to call you IGNORANT as in stupid or anything. I think it was a general statement when referencing the joke of a brillo pad and the soap. Some new folks may actually take that as a serious action to follow.
And I know you may think of it as a joke, your thread title, knowing its not a 63, but if you knew that much, wouldn't you have known this is an AU details coin? It looks like it may have been cleaned, but the only real way to know is to have the coin in hand. I'd say AU53 and possibly cleaned. Can't say with absolute certainty in this case whether or not it has been cleaned.
We welcome the "ignorant" folks here. This is a place to learn and every poster on this forum is actually learning...every day they come here!
Welcome to the forums, by the way! I don't know (remember) if I've said so yet.
I just re-read this post and noticed my "ignorant" comment stirred up a few comments.
I apologize if it was offensive to the OP (or others posting after me), it wasn't meant to be be directed at you per-se, but to the general public who are not involved heavily in coins and think that "improving" their surface appearance will enhance their value.
But when you go on to say "should I clean the coin", and then specify "with acetone" those two have widely different meanings, easily misunderstood on these message boards.

Yes. It's amazing what non-collectors will do to coins to shine them up to make them purdy and more valuable. Usually a pencil eraser or a polishing cloth is their first choice. I remember seeing a coin cleaning kit in a hobby shop many years ago that included a brass brush and chemicals in a neat little blister pack. A chill went up my spine when I saw that.

The coin is not mint state, but has some circulation wear (as evidenced by some flat spots on the high points of the design elements). The coin has been cleaned at one time, likely to high the small amount of wear. The wear which shows on an original coin as flat spots of a slightly darker color. Cleaning the coin generally changes the darker "wear" spots to be consistent with the rest of the coin and with the intent of mimicking an uncirculated coin.

Cleaning with acetone... GOOD or BAD, depending on a lot of variables... if it needs it... it hasn't been over-dipped... or if you're getting ready to sell it to someone who just cleaned their other coin with pink soap in a Brillo pad!
this is not an over/under, nor a 63 or push. Pull it from thought, and that ratty 2x2 and place it in a Taco Bell napkin, set it on the water heater or in your attic for the next 6-9 months, allow it to mature. Remove it gently from the wrap and view it with 2 fingers on the side (wash yer hands foist!) and give it a spin in natural light- it may show signs of advanced patina (aka- artificial toning from a napkin)- put it up on ebay as an old piece and you will triple your money in a heartbeat, so you can turn that $$ into a nice graded MS64 in an NGC or old Anacs holdered coin.
