1937 Proof Walker

What do you think of this coin? Does the black stuff on the coin just look like toning or something else? What do you think the grade should be? I'm posting several pics because I couldn't get any good ones.

It is almost impossible to assign a number grade to Proof coins from a photograph because the grade hinges so much on the presence or absence of hairlines and then on the number of hairline marks. A grader must review these coins under a strong light.

I don't like the spots on this coin at all. I think they make the piece look unattractive. There is a chance that they might dip off the piece, but given their look, they probably will leave some marks. This might be one of those situations where the coin could get a high technical slab grade if it were to be left undipped, but would be quite unattractive to many collectors.

If you have a choice I think I’d pass on this piece and look for one with more eye appeal.

Based on your images, I'd judge that to be mildew. Most of it will likely rinse away in acetone, but I wouldn't be optimistic regarding the appearance of a proof surface where the mildew has been for years.

It could be album tone. I don't know if it will grade or not and won't offer a grade opinion.

Those marks go right up and over onto the rims.
Does not look natural to me.
Something is off with this coin IMO.
The marks around her midsection do not look the same as
the spotty toning. Looks burnished/boinked in some way.
Look at this one close before you buy it.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Based on the pictures, I would suggest that you send the coin to NCS for "conservation". They might be able to make its appearance a lot better. JMHO.

I don't really care for that type of toning.

    Hi,

I have seen these spots or spots like them on Proof Walkers. They usually don't come off or have bitten the surface. Sometimes they look like this after the dip. In general, there are many nicer Proof Walkers.

    Best wishes,
    Eric

To add - especially the darker marks midsection - those often don't come off. They look like burn marks - I have seen them called "carbon marks" when they won't budge.

    Best,

So did NGC get it wrong on this one? Or do you think it may have changed after it was slabbed?

Wow, I am amazed at some of the opinions offered. This is a 100% ORIGINAL coin. The toning on the coin is not PVC, it is simply toning. You don't see many like this anymore, many have been dipped white. I like the coin a lot, and I have seen MANY 1936-42 Proof coins.

I'm in total agreement with Paul. That type of toning is 100% natural for this era. It may not be attractive but it is natural.

I had a couple of PR66 Mercury Dimes with similar toning. Not the most eye appealing in my opinion, but original none the less.
