Teletrade Auction 2487 • Lot 1940 • Sunday, February 10, 2008 $1050 realized price
Same coin.
I have existed since the creation of this world and will exist until its end. Only my form will change. For these 80 human life years, I have the benefit of having a functioning body and consciousness. I will not waste this opportunity.
I'm glad I only big bucks over the melt value for OLD coins. I can skip this stuff and never think twice. (The 2009 High Relief $20 gold was over a thousand, but there was an ounce of bullion.)
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

This is my coin. For the record I have been on this board for 8 years, never a compliant from anyone. I have done hundreds of transactions on ebay. NEVER have I had an unhappy customer. I have bought and sold with the major auctions houses and many, many dealers over a twenty five year span. Never a problem, never a complaint about the way I do business. I am an honest straight forward guy who does what I say I am going to do. If I take a coin on approval, I mail a check the day I get it.
I always conduct myself professionally as a gentleman in all of the transactions I have done over the last twenty years. I pride myself on my reputation.
I bought this coin last year from a national reputable dealer who I have a long standing relationship with for many years. A dealer I trust, not someone who flipped me the coin to make a quick buck. The coin looked the same the day I bought it as it does today.
Everyone has the right to their opinion on the coin.
Let's keep the opinions to the coin and not my character. I am not a fool. I never put a torch to the coin, put it in a burlap bag or tampered with it in any way.
I am an ANA Life member and I proud to say that. I have educated many, many YN's over the years and I enjoy teaching the next generation about the joy of collecting. My reputation means everything to me. The price I have it listed is marginally higher then the price I paid when I factor in my ebay fees.
The coin has been certified by PCGS. I held it until recently when I decided to list it on ebay.
I will not respond any further to this thread but I wanted to let everyone know the full story.

The OP is not Gaudens. Unless you think kimber45ACP and Gaudens are in cahoots.

The toning could be natural. I define natural as storage under honest conditions.
I base my assertion on the following - I have 'cracked' silver proof Statehood quarters out of mint packaging every year and placed them in a Heritage coin board, hanging the boards in my 'quarters'/bedroom (sorry for the pun). These proofs have all toned in various degrees. The Iowa is darker than most would have thought possible given its age. I'm in my first year for doing the same for the State Park series - even these first five silvers show a light gold wash in the Heritage coin board. I would contend that these are NT coins, but admit that they are hardly marketable. They look good on my walls, and I enjoy them as such.
I really like these 2001 Buffaloes - I have two left in the original mint packaging. I have given three away as gifts over the years, and they have been well received.
For my tastes, I'd prefer a white Buffalo. However, the coin for sale could be an honest, naturally toned piece.
Greysheet for the 2001 Buffalo pair is near 300, so I'd surely take seven sets of white buffaloes - total of fourteen ounces of silver - over this one toned piece. IMHO.
Good luck to the seller. ebay is full of suckers, so the coin should move.
It should be noted the sellers honest and effective selling style is to list a coin at a high price and reduce it little by little as with another coin of his I have been watching THIS. It's clear the guy collects coins with interesting surfaces and with any interesting surface coin, other peoples opinions will vary on originality and desirability. I think we should give him a break as I doubt I would like the look of all your coins either & nor would you mine.
The coin frankly looks the same now as it did when it went through Teletrade, and that coin is far from "nasty" imo. What's the owner to do, crack it out and dip the color of it? AT or no, he bought it fair and square and is free to ask whatever price he desires.
Maybe the coin was in a coin and currency set for 8 years or so to get that way, and was sent in still in the outer plastic??------------------------BigE
<< Another numismatic abortion. That coin belongs in a vomitorium. Who buys this ****? I find just looking at it to be offensive. >> Damit son! Now I'm seeing coin doctors with coat hangers... But I always roflmao when you say that vomitorium thing. I can just picture in my mind people sitting around in Ancient Rome looking at ugly coins & vomiting all over the place to rid themselves of excessive wine, food, and orgies. But you forgot to use your other line about the urine toning that you used to say. You're slacking up in your old age Elcontadore. Personally I think the obv is pretty. Too bad the rev doesn't match. I can see everybody's reason for not liking it though; if it were a Barber or Morgan it would look great but the delicate blue, purple, red and burnt orange just doesn't go well with that rough & rugged ugly arse old Indian, especially in the eye & nose area. Makes it look creepy.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
<< <i>AT'ed in the holder after PCGS certified it if you ask me. >>
Gee, it would be easy enough to contact PCGS and ask first, before you folks try, convict and hang someone.
Frankly, I think it looks kinda neat, but overpriced. I'm sure that PCGS thought it was ok too. >>
Where in my statement am I trying to convict and hang someone? I am not making accusations against anyone. To me it looks like the toning was painted on, and I just don't think that PCGS would have graded it looking the way that it does. If it was that way, and PCGS thought it was fine then I don't have a problem with it. Would I buy it? Not a chance, it looks baked. Maybe my opinion would change if I got to see it in hand. Go ahead and contact PCGS and give them the cert number and see if they remember what it looked like when they received it. There is no True View for the coin and PCGS at least did not photograph every coin that came in back when this Buffalo was certified.
<< <i>Looks like someone deliberately placed the coin where it would tone quickly...actually, the results are not ugly. >>
I agree...I would say the coin is market acceptable and PCGS agreed. I also think it was place in an environment specifically so it would tone so I think the toning is somewhat accelerated for sure but I don't believe any chemicals were applied etc. If you leave an ASE on a windowsill for like 2 years you can get it to fully tone so it's not hard to imagine that a coin 10 years old could tone like this but again....in normal mint packaging it't not going to happen so its deliberate for sure.
<< <i>Surely PCGS would not slab such a coin as this, so I'm guessing it was doctored after encapsulated? It would seem PCGS could track down this doc. >>
PCGS did indeed grade this coin prior to the "crackdown" on artificial toning or what "appeared" to be artificial toning.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

That starting price makes the seller look like a fool.
I knew it would happen.
It would seem PCGS could track down this doc.
