Cash 4 Gold VS Jack Beymer....

I went to Jacks B&M to sell a $50 AGE this morning. Coddingtown Coin doesn't open until 10 am. I had 10 minutes to kill so I walked thru the mall. Lo and behold there was a Cash 4 gold booth. The girl running the booth was embarassed to quote me a price, she's obviously aware of Jacks competition. When pushed for a price quote she offered $525.00. I almost felt bad asking her but I had to comparison shop! Right? Jacks shop made a very fair offer of $1250.00 on a day when the market was headed down a bit.
On the other hand I upgraded my $1 seated liberty pcgs 40 a couple of months back and took that with me to see what they would offer. After inspecting the coin, Tom said he thought the coin was real good for the grade with nice eye appeal. His offer was $350.00. I thought about it for a sec and decided I could do better on the BST or Ebay and thanked him for the offer.
Coddingtown Coin is, in my opinion, a top notch outfit. We also have Don Rinkor about a mile from Jacks shop. Pretty blessed here in the Wine Country!

<< <i>I used to do some biz with Jack Beymer, but then received some pretty marginal coins in the mail, and was treated rudely several times by Jack himself at shows. I still get their price lists in the mail, and they appear to charge some of the highest prices in the country for their coins. Not exactly what I'd call a blessing, but if you are selling, and not dealing with Jack, then maybe it's not so bad. >>

I've received the same service at shows from him, but his wife was always nice to me.

Ditto - Mrs. B is a winner!
60 years into this hobby and I'm still working on my Lincoln set!
<< <i>Good quality coinage too. You're just going to have to pony up and pay for them. >>
Yes, in general the coins are fairly well graded and problem free. But he's never had anything I couldn't find elsewhere at more reasonable prices, and I'm not going 'pony up' and pay high retail+ with a dealer I do not care for. But he's been in biz for a long time, so obviously some folks must like doing business with him. I'm just not one of them, and I know from talking to other dealers and friends in the hobby that I'm not alone.
<< <i>Man it is bad, people are getting screwed and there is nothing stopping these places from doing it. >>
These places survive because the vast majority of people are ignorant of the true value of gold. People who go to those stores have every right to leave (or never go in the first place) and shop their gold around. The fact that they don't isn't the store's problem.
<< <i>ridiculous offers.....I hope those cash 4 gold places go out of business. >>
<< <i>Mrs. B rocks. Jack's fair on his buy prices and his sell prices seem to be high retail at minimum. It's been my experience that he's not overly willing to negotiate on those sell prices too much either. Good quality coinage too. You're just going to have to pony up and pay for them. >>
Jack is a nerd and it shows. He always has his nose buried in a magazine or coin book.
If Mrs. B wasn't there with him at the shows, I don't know who would talk to his
customers. She is a real asset to him and I think she realizes a need to be his complement.
I've had several nice conversations with her. My conversations with him have been
mostly monosyllabic.
Jack grades conservatively, old school. For example, to him a buffalo nickel isn't VF unless
it has a full horn. PCGS doesn't currently grade buffaloes that way, and even Photograde
doesn't show a full horn until VF35 (or maybe VF30 if you squint and pretend). But when
you buy that VF full horn buffalo from Jack, you're going to pay XF money for it. Because
any other dealer would call it XF and charge XF money for it.
It's like the old story about the dealer with a coin marked $100. When a customer asked
if he thought it graded VF or XF, the dealer replied that he thought it graded $100.

<< <i>Am I missing something. He offered $350 for an XF Seated Dollar in a PCGS holder? Isn't that a $700+ coin? >>
Depending on the year, it could be a $450+ coin, but more likely $550+.
TNFC has one posted on their site for $575

I saw one posted last month on another site for $525, but it's no longer
showing up in my search so it might have sold.

I was in a convenience store in Portsmouth NH a few weeks ago, and a woman came in to buy some beer. She went to the counter gloating how she got her beer money by selling some silver coins she had at the Portsmouth Hilton. She got 40¢ for the dimes, and $1.00 for the quarters, and she was thrilled.

Not a fan either, and I love copper. I tried a few times to buy and sell but the numbers were silly...almost offensive. I don't even stop at his table anymore, though I do flash a friendly smile to his pleasant wife.

<< <i>The Cash 4 Gold type businesses will be around as long as there are morons who will sell to them.

Couldn't she have paid a lot less for the beer at a Sam's Club
The point being, selling your coins at the Hilton involves the same sort of "convenience factor."
How awful it is that convenience stores charge more than regular stores. They should all be arrested.
<< <i>That's funny, I did the same thing about a year ago accept it was when Check City started buying gold. Check City is a payday advance outfit. Now they buy gold, so I called in and played totally dumb and tried described the coin as if I had no clue what I had to the girl which happened to by a $50 gold eagle. She offered me $326. I asked her if that was a fair price and if I could get more elsewhere. She told me that their pricing was competitive and fluctuates with current market. I wanted so bad to call her out, but didn't. Man it is bad, people are getting screwed and there is nothing stopping these places from doing it. >>
I place a lot of the blame for these back alley dealers on the newspapers.
Ours has them frequently selling "fat burner" pills, Amish fireplaces, and "no freon air conditioners".
Also advertising is the outfit (you probably know who I mean) which absolutely glows with pride about all the gold, toys, guns, etc., they buy.
Once, they quoted a former dentist who saved all the gold fillings he had gotten in his 30-40 years in business. They paid him about $100/Oz.
Needless to say, he was "happy as a lark" as we said in the Southern part of the state.
I've thought about giving them a call and asking them if they think this is a public service they're doing for the community.
I've never taken that action but when they stop delivering our paper, I just might.
One particular TV commercial, maybe TitleMax, shows half a dozen people telling how happy they are with the service.
You never saw so many idiotic grins, WIDE grins, in your lifetime. I grab the mute when they show that one.
And that's all I have to say about that.

<< <i>About twenty years ago, I used to make a point to stop at Beymer's shop. About that time, I also checked out his table at coin shows. Since then, I simply pass on by without looking. Wasted a lot of my time, since I was never able to buy even one coin from Beymer. >>
Why? Overpriced?
