    I would have preferred a few higher grades,but again,with these colors,it really doesn't matter.
The only grade that would really make a difference would be a 68...

Pardon my inquiry, not trying to start anything, just wondering. How does a coin like that get a 66 with the reed mark under the eye and the chatter on the reverse? Would it get the same grade if it were white?

In cases involving toned coins, PCGS is adjusting technical grades for eye appeal. Recently, PCGS made public a sample eye appeal set of coins, showing the effects of a range of toning types on the final grade (-2 pts. to +1 pt.). For toning like this Morgan displays, the eye appeal was probably bumped up by 0.75 to 1.0 pt. Many buyers of such coins (I am one---I bought two of the Sonnier coins from Legend) base their purchase decisions on the toning alone because the 'toning premium' overwhelms even a 1 point MS grade difference in the case of generic Morgans.

I was not bragging at all..just explaining what these coins go for.
One colored coin dealer behind me at the last show had a case full of these, and most were over 10k each.

I hope you don't think I paid a few hundred bucks each for these coins.

I try and make a small profit, and make the new owners happy..

There's similar damage to the brow and lower eyelid, though it's not as pronounced. In defense of the graders, that makeup conceals those zits. In terms of eye appeal, that damage isn't as distracting as were it on a white, for example. As far as those grazes on the reverse go, I could accept a fair amount of that on a 65 reverse, but would expect a 66 reverse to show a cleaner, for sure. All to say, IMHO, they may have been a little generous on this one for the toning. Then again, that's what market grading is about...

Coins like this no doubt get a "bump" for exceptional eye-appeal. And PCGS has stated publicly that such coins will get the bump:

This is idiotic. Guess what, you're allowed to have some marks on Morgans and still get 65s and 66s. Otherwise they'd be graded higher. Learn to grade! Look at thousands of Morgans graded between 60-68 and learn to grade!

    Stunning coins.

My thoughts from another thread re toned coins:

Also, I enjoyed having collectors look at my coins for hours on end at shows and the issue of the coin's grade NEVER entering into the conversation......it was all about the colors, the luster, the toning process, the GSA sale.......nothing about the grade.

In the OP's defense, these coins are desirable primarily for their attractive toning features, not from a technical standpoint in terms of contact marks or strike features. Did you check the grades assigned before making disparaging comments?

3007 A few ticks behind the head but the fields and devices are clean.

    3013 It's graded MS64. Again, it's graded MS64 and not any higher.

3014 That is an 1883-O. That date comes flat-breasted as struck. If anything the strike on the obverse is a more relevant issue pertaining to the assigned grade.

3015 You made an extra effort to point out the evidence of handling on the reverse, but failed to comment on the toning on the obverse. That coin is also graded MS65(+), and from what I see it fully deserves that grade.

3016 Coin is graded MS64(+). MS64 grade Morgans are allowed a few hits on the fields. It's not like it graded a 67 or anything.

The author of that set of comments as quoted above should show us some of his comparable toners and in turn teach us what, in his opinions, good coins should look like.

  • Connecticoin, thanks for the article. At least they tell you up front what their method of insanity is, which is admirable. I inferred as much off the ANA standards, that that's where market grading is going, but it does help to see it laid-out, some, in a trusted TPG, like this, I think. Not saying my methodology ain't a tad more conservative than that, though. Hey, FWIW...

With colors like those shown, MS-64 or MS-65 would be sufficient.

Anything higher is merely icing on the cake.
