A collection ruined.
Imagine that you were a long time collector who, for one reason or another, drifted away from the hobby.
Slowly lost interest as many people do. You take the tubes and rolls, albums and mint sets and place them in the
safe deposit box.
There they sit for twenty years. Then one day you think about them and the enjoyment they once brought.
You decide to make the trip to the small town bank and view them again. You think about maybe even filling a few of those holes.
Yes that might be enjoyable. It occurs to you that you would like to pass them on to your grandson.
Even though there's nothing there extremely valuable you hope that he might appreciate them.
You enter the cramped little viewing room at the bank full of anticipation.
You slowly start pulling out items you had forgotten about long ago. Lots of memories here in this little box.
Then you notice something isn't exactly right. Curious you investigate further.
That's when your hopes and new found enthusiasm come crashing to the ground.
There in front of you is page after page, book after book of.. of...
I wonder how many times this story has been repeated in recent years?

I don't think I could sleep until I did something about it. Acetone for sure. Can't hurt and may save many.
Regrets,

Many members on this forum that now it cannot fit in my signature. Please ask for entire list.
<< <i>why don't more people store coins in 2x2 flips? >>
Back in those days, this "soft vinyl" was pliable and was not believed to be anything but a benefit to the collectors for storage. It seemed the perfect fit.
I recently got a set of Franklins like that. It was a quick trip to Home Depot for a can of acetone and a jar.
The residue left over after evaporation was a green plasticized goo that peeled off the bottom of the jar. Quite nasty stuff and it must be depressing to the OP, but there is hope...to be honest.

Just sad.
The '60's era French mint sets and '70's Japanese mint sets are almost totally
destroyed. 1968-P cents in mint sets are all carbon spotted now.

<< <i>We have several 1970s era Japanese mint sets and the coins are destroyed. >>
I think the '75 is the worst. I haven't seen one with good coins in it since the early '90's.
So few people collect moderns one has to wonder how many survived. I've lost many many
coins in mint set holders but always get them out when I see one starting to go.

I do know the owner and offered to help him clean up the mess.
He is still undecided if he wants me to do anything.
He has heard that cleaning coins will lower the value!!!
Make sure that there are no open sources of flame anywhere near you, and no ignition sources. Use small amounts in enclosed containers.
Gloves are a good idea, acetone will take all the oils from your skin. Use good ventilation. Be careful and don't compound your loss by creating a health problem. The coins are mostly recoverable, but it will take some time.
I knew it would happen.
<< <i>Those albums are notorious for damaging coins via PVC. >>
Yep.
Complete set of Washington Quarters 1932-64... All bought from Bowers back in the 1960's/70's. A lot of them were in cardboard 2x2's cradled by the PVC holders they came in. EXCEPT.... the 1932-D. All of these were sold as 'MS-65' which many of them have a shot at... I almost cried when I saw the green on the surfaces of the 32-D.
Acetone will do the trick on the collection mentioned in the beginning. Does anyone know what happened to the company that made these albums? Was there a lawsuit? They sure do look like the vintage version of Dansco Albums...
