Recent thread about 1960's folders made me take a look at albums I'd long forgotten about.

Was pleasently surprised to find this red-green 1/2 cent in a type album. Prettier in hand than in the picture. image

    So why is this so much different from all of the colored Indian Cents?

    I like it too.

    coinguy1, do you think the coin was dipped then placed in the album? What do you think happened to that one? I'm not too familiar with copper, except I'm getting familiar with the blue Indian cents, to know what happened to this one.

    Regardless I would put it in my half cent collection...

    I believe (from one of QDB's books) a small 'hoard' of mostly red 1828 half cents was discovered some years back, and my initial thoughts is that this was one of them.....I would not be quick to dismiss this as a dipped and retoned example. But who knows - there is some very deceptive copper around. I would also not be surprised if the nervous TPG's bag this one, though personally I like it.

    Personally, I couldn't care less if the top tier TPGs wouldn't slab it, or if others here don't like it's looks.

    I think it looks great and would love to have it in my collection!


    As for the color, who knows, it may have spent 70 or 80 years in a wooden cabinet where many early collections were kept. Follow this by several years in a coin album, and who knows what you're going to get.

    In the case of mint state Indian cents, I don't see ones with these colors that look original or are typically slabbed as such. And even in the case of colorfully toned Proofs, they would tend to tone differently from business strikes, and I don't recall having seen any with this color combination.

    It does not look like a mostly un-mellowed or mellowed blend of red/brown seen on original copper coins. Consequently, I believe that it was previously dipped and/or re-colored. I have never seen one with this type of appearance slabbed by a major TPG. Don't get me wrong - I think it is attractive, just not original.

    That half cent is okay, but it's nothing special. I agree that it is not original, and the 1828 with 13 stars is a "common date" in the series in Mint State because of a hoard.

    If you want a slabbed half cent, my advice is to buy one on the holder. Don't buy a raw one with the idea of getting it slabbed. The major services are very fickle when comes to grading early copper. I've seen coins with major problems and extensive "restoration work" in slabs, and I've seen choice fully original pieces come back in body bags.

    Sheesh! All the guy is asking is if anybody else likes it as much as he does. He already owns it, and evidently has for quite some time. He never said anything about getting it slabbed or whether or not it was a desireable date. He likes it and just wanted to show it off.

    Wow, I'm surprised anyone ever shows a picture of a coin they own here. Even the slabbed ones sometimes get slammed for being overgraded, undergraded, cleaned, etc, etc, etc.

    Sorry for the rant, but some of us collect for fun - as a hobby - and it's just nice to have somebody else say "Hey, nice coin!" once in a while.

    All I was trying to do was to advise others about what it's like to get earlier copper coins into slabs. I've wasted a fair amount of money on grading fees in the past, and I was trying to help others avoid that mistake.

    Now that you get a "genuine" holder it's not as bad. In the old days you got nothing for your money and that stinks after you submitted a coin that really had no problems.

    So, when someone starts a thread titled "Anyone else like this 1/2 cent? ", you feel that those who think it has a problem, shouldn't comment? I know the original poster and he has some incredible coins. I doubt that the comments in this thread will cause him to think twice about posting in the future. To Tim - if I am wrong about that, please feel free to correct me publicly, here.

    I could have refrained from commenting at all or said "pretty coin" and ended it there. But I felt some posters might want to know or learn that, while attractive, copper coins with those colors are, almost certainly, not original.

    I recently traded off a Large Cent that was very attractive in a similar way to this Half Cent, which is also very attractive. After owning it for 20 years, I discovered that it wasn't "original" and I decided that I would let it go.

    Now, I kinda miss it. Fact is, you may not see that many Half Cents this attractive, original or not. Beauty is in the eye of the buyer.

    Just my unprofessional opinion.

    I forget what it looked like when I bought it 15 years ago. I was a newbie w/o a camera. Put it in a dansco album, the type with sliding plastic front and back.

    Dug it out earlier this week after reading the 1960's album thread and was surprised to see the colors.

    I plan to keep it in the folder and check again in 15 years. image

    Some years ago there was actually a hoard of relatively high 1828, 12 star half cents that appeared on the market. The hoard has since been absorbed. I have one in EF somewhere in my collection, but I’d have a picture of it at the moment. The 12 star is not super scarce, but it is hard to find in true Mint State.

    I sincerely apologize if I offended anyone with my previous post in this thread. I did not mean that anyone should ever hold back on their educated opinions, as we can all benefit from some additional knowledge.
    Even though I have been collecting for more than 25 years, I suppose I have never lost the enjoyment and wonder in seeing a nearly 200 year old coin, and trying to imagine where it has been and who has held it in that time and I sometimes grow weary of the strings of negative comments. If it were fake or harshly cleaned, I can understand that, but I don't put too much weight on the color of a coin, especially old copper, that I've only viewed on my computer screen. As the OP stated, it looks much better in hand.

    Anyway, I'm sorry. Please forgive me.
