I am going to try to go through every page on this thread, and identify each coin by page, poster, variety number and rarity. THat should help me develop some sort of skills.
How accurate are the rarity designations given to CBH anyway?
Thanks Lewy, I am pretty fond of that one as well.
As far as rarity ratings, I believe that the last time they were revised by the BHNC was back in 2004, but I could be wrong. Perhaps others here will chime in and let us know.
Since then, I am sure that some varieties have changed their R values.
I'm curious as to when the next meeting will take place where the R values will be looked at and possibly changed.....
Only the 3rd 1826 since ocon4008 and MaineJim's earlier posts.
MS62 O-108a purchased from Julian Leidman in Baltimore 2 years ago.
The O-108a is different from the O-108 with the following details: OBV. additional die crack from star 1 across end of bust to join top of date. REV. die crack through UNITE and along top of scroll to S OF AM.
ps. I love this coin.....thank you Julian. pss. Crossed from NGC MS62!!
Ok, so now make it four 1826's...........the toning on my 1826 may be darker than typically seen on a AU58, but the surfaces are almost flawless and the luster is all there for the grade.
<< <i>[RIPPP? Seemed like a fortune at the time (2004). I carried it for about a week in my wallet (in it's 2x2), I was so proud of the coin. It will be around long after the seated dollars and liberty nickels.
Now for the rip... it was also a ~$70 coin, ebay this time. Unfortunately I now longer own this one, she's onto a new owner, who was a perfect fit for her. Can you tell why this one is so special?] >>
She looks like an O-121, but I have a feeling that I am missing something else that sweetened the deal. >>
A problem free VF O-121 for $70, how much sweeter do you want? Geeesh some people! lol
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!
<< <i>another visit to this thread to ogle some more. I hesitate to single out any cuz I love em all! (One of these days I will repair or replace my camera and post new images, including the 1813 that got me started on cbh's.
Oh, Lewy, what say you about the stars on Speety's 1830 rip??
And Speety, $65?? She's got AU meat and then some, especially when you factor the LDS. But I am guessing she landed in a 53 holder. How's the luster?? >>

Very cool, Speety!! Now interpret the 'specialnees.'
Here's one from my collection I haven't learned to love.
I bought it a while back, when I started to develop a fever but didn't have the disease. At the time I thought about returning it and maybe I should have. It is just so damn dark it's hard to enjoy. That's really my chief complaint.
I am considering selling it and moving on. But I guess I'd like second opinions.
So, Dave(s), John, Michael, Al, Jim and the rest of you. What would you do? This isn't a difficult piece and I'm sure I can do better. Lance.
Bully, that is a very neat Bible page that you have there. I am looking to purchase an 1820 O-108, could you please post 'that' description to help me in positive identification? Thanks, Lewy
Yes, self portrait, but had a little trouble holding the camera straight as you can see.
Hey Lance, Your 33 looks like an O-101, an R1 variety. Is the coin this chocolate brown color or is it a darker steely gray color? Some collectors love dark toned coins while others prefer a lighter, more colorful tone. If you own this and are having second thoughts I believe that fact alone might be telling you what type of tone you prefer. I think the coin is very collectible and you would have no trouble selling her. She will probably be scooped up by a collector who prefers a darker tone. I would prefer if the coin was a tad less brown, but I think that may be the case as I know when I take a pic of a dark toned CBH they always look brown
Thanks, John. Yes, that's the attribution I came up with.
It is very dark chocolate, not grey. And you are probably correct...if I'm on the fence I'm likely to fall to the sell-it side. It doesn't fit the look of the rest of my set, either.
Good to know to know there's a market for ones like this. But I may have to give it to Lewy since he asked so nicely. Lance.
Yes John, I now have the image of that 1820 O-108 reverse branded in my mind, but I wanted the verbiage that Lance provided just to round me out. Thanks very much to both of you !

Thanks for the clarification on the Rarity rating Dave.

I posted an 1820 O-108 earlier in the thread if you need to take a look.

That is not an option, but an executive order. and it will be kept going, so get out and buy the ladies!
OK. Now let us get down to business. What is it that this coin is lacking (other than a slab)?

I suck at judging luster without the coin in hand but that would be my guess.

Yeah, well, luster is totally obliterated from the surfaces, but there is something else that is not present...
