Did your taste in coins change this year?

DennisHDennisH Posts: 14,041 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't mean did you change the series you collect, but did the grade or overall "look" that you find appealing change?

For me, a great deal more of my attention in 2009 was devoted to circulated coins instead of Mint State examples. As a result, my appreciation for original surfaces with even, medium gray-toned surfaces grew by leaps and bounds. Now I find myself more attracted to "circulation cameo" VF25 or 30s than to AU-anythings, and a circ. coin that has been dipped makes me gag.
When in doubt, don't.

My taste in coins for my collection did fluctuate a little over the year. I went back and forth between being very picky to more tolerant and accepting. My taste for the "right" color and original surfaces did not fluctuate much though.

I became obsessed with a 'Genuine' coin this year... never thought that'd happen!

    Taste didn't. Budget surely did.
So VF20 is the new XF45.
Still has to look leathery and original though.
    We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

No. I still want stuff that is too expensive. image

I've been pleasing myself with political medalets and tokens that I find almost equally interesting for a lot less money, but the collector bug still bites to "finish that type collection!"

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I want miracle coins on bubblegum money, more than ever before.

My records say I acquired 24 items for my standing collection this year, which is more than I would have guessed. I would have said, off the top of my head, fewer than half that. Looking over what these are, I think I did fairly well in insisting on only good looking coins with some particular extra bit of merit of one sort or another to recommend them. I guess the thing is, my window of tolerances keeps getting narrower.

I finally realized that the look I like the most is XF30-XF45. I'd trade every MS63 I've got, straight across, for XF45's.
So, if I ever finish my set, I'll eventually be wanting to "down-grade" most of them to get a matching set.

Not per se. I have become a lot pickier this year though, as my collecting budget has to get split between coins and space memorabilia (SM) and SM is winning the budget fight about 4 or 5 to 1. So whereas previously I'd be willing to buy coins that were completely out of my field, or borderline for their grade if they had some eye appeal, nowadays I'm MUCH more focused on what I get. I think part of it also is that I've already got a bunch of coins so I'm starting to re-appreciate looking at the coins that I do have.

sure did. Really beginning to get out of the bullion mindset and into the coin collecting mind set. Really like barber coinage as well as frankies, wlhs, slqs, anything 90% image

Same here looking for more nicer coins with a little biger price tags. With the way some coins driped in price or more deals out there. I can get in to some nice coins for less then last year. So I am doing it. Going to pick up a half dime today I'll post it when back. image

I've been thinking of doing a set of Morgans in VF... for a lot of the dates it looks like a real challenge.

i changed from liking dipped coins to not liking them. I am now 100% against dipping and think it should drop the value by at least 50% . Now I just want NT original original ugly stuff, but not rainbow stuff please. image

Oh yes, completed the change to buying toned silver, then made the discovery that copper was capable of attaining wonderful colors and started acquiring examples, first IH's, then tokens.

No, nothing's changed. I still have a champagne taste in coins but only a beer pocketbook, and I don't even drink alcohol.

This year I changed my purchasing strategy - qualitiy vs. quantity or more coin dealers less Flea-bay...

Yes it did! It went from 100% coins, 0% Baseball cards to 95% baseball cards, 5% coins.
