In honor of bear

rld14rld14 Posts: 2,390 ✭✭✭
At the Sunday Parsippany show I was hanging out with Larry (SeaEagleCoins) and we got to talking about donuts.

Now. Since I am a PROUD recipient of Bear's "Growl of Approval" award. And since we know Bear's affinity for donuts...

I present to the forum Larry holding a Donut in honor of Bear.

Post a coin with a Bear on it or a donut on it.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

The 49er on the California Diamond Jubilee commemorative kind of looks like Larry panning for donuts.

The dealers all scarf them up first thing in the morning image (Bear, if you're ever gonna be in our neck of the woods...just give a growl and I'll make sure to stash a jelly donut or three just for you image )

Bill, you took a few seconds too long to take that pic... cause I had a big toothy "donut" eating grin right before you took it... I was gonna take a big bite out of that donut for the pic... but I didn't want to upset Bear... cruelty to donuts and such... image

I vote Larry, The 2009 Numismatic Coin Stud Award.
    Reasons:
    1. Sexy Coin Necklace
    2. Thick bushy beard, with just a tough of grey.
    3. Only needs a 'training' Man Bra
    4. Holds donut with thumb and index finger
    5. Is that a leather hat??? image
    6. Only posts happy things on the CU Coin Forum.

Anyone care to agree, or do you have another candidate??

  • Goldbully ... you are a character, dude imageimage

Regarding #3 ... that's what happens when you are a Furniture Mover for 10 years... then become a coin dealer... years of muscle get soft fast and then the belly starts to grow... I ate like a Bear when i was a mover... burned it all off... problem is, I still eat like a Bear... image

...and yes... that's my signature leather hat... only time I don't wear it at a show is during the summer... gets way too hot under there...

Also need to add... I am not sure I'm comfortable with a guy nominating me for a Stud Award... maybe if it was Charmy or Lucy, then that would be a bit different ... image (edited to add... or pakasmom image )

  • Mr. Bear Sir,

I have a couple of coins with bears on them but no pics. So allow me to speak of donuts. Back in the late 60's and early 70's it seems a lot of times on Saturday nights we would , for whatever reason, usually the munchies, get in the mood for donuts. We would load up the car and make the 25 mile drive to the Krispy Kreme donut shop in Charlotte. Since Krispy Kreme is out of North Carolina I have had the pleasure of knowing KKs my entire life. Don't know why I'm telling you this, just want to congratulate you on your own thread here on the Forum.

  • No pics to add to this thread... but I do have a little story... about how the name Sea Eagle Coins came about... and it has to do with a Bear...

Sun Bear, that is... a Chippewa Medicine Man... who I lived with for a spell back in the 70's... he took me to a PowWow of sorts... the Omak Stampede in Washington State... he would travel the circuit of PowWows... with a "cover story" of buying/selling/tradng Navajo and Zuni jewelry... many cool tales to tell regarding this... but I'll get to the point of the name of my business...

While with him, I asked him about me getting an "Indian" name... he said that usually came about as the result of vision quest... well... with a looooonnnnggg story behind it, around a year or so later... on a beach in Western Washington... I did have my quest... along with a vision... and a "connection" of sorts with a Sea Gull... since I have a family member (in law) named Larry Seigle... I thought it best to not name myself Larry Sea Gull image... so I went with Sea Eagle... a number of experiences after that confirmed this name... as well as Sun Bear...

So when I started up this business... in honor of Sun Bear and my experiences with him... I named the business Sea Eagle Coins...

One more side tale... and this one is for our beloved donut eating bear... there are those who might reprimand him for eating such unhealthy foods... however... here is another tale...

While leaving the Omak Stampede, we were driving along and I spotted a Kentucky Fried Chicken joint on the other side of the highway (back then it was still called Colonel Sanders)... he saw me looking and asked if I was hungry... I sheepishly said yes... he asked if I wanted Fried Chicken... again, sheepishly yes... after all... he's a Medicine Man and here I am craving junk food...

So he turns around and back to the Colonel we go... we walk in... Sun Bear, a Crow woman traveling with us, Shining Turtle and little ole' me... he starts greeting everyone... telling some jokes and getting everyone to smile... even called out the folks from the back of the kitchen... introduced himself and got everyone in a good mood... AND THEN he ordered up a bucket of chicken with some potatoes and biscuits... even some soda... and off we went to a table to eat...

I looked at him and watched him delicately enjoy his chicken... and he's a big man... not easy to be delicate when you're that big...

Anyway... I wondered about him being willing to eat Fast Food (naively thinking he should only eat fresh foods and such... which we mainly did back home)... a few other times on little field trips into Spokane, he would take me to a little "greasy spoon" diner... down home nice folks... knew them all and always said hi to everyone, including the kitchen stafff before sitting down and ordering... always got everyone smiling and happy...

So... I finally asked him... "What is up with you eating all this junk food? I mean, I like it but I didn't think a Medicine Man would eat this kind of stuff"

He replied... "First off... I am not a Medicine Man... I am a Medicine Teacher..." (I still am not sure what the difference is image ) ... "...and the way I approach food is this... if it is prepared with care and offered to me by friendly folks with good intentions, I will eat whatever I am served. But if I go into one the those health food places and everyone is unfriendly or snotty like they tend to be... well, they can keep their sprouts and tofu and such. It is good positive energy that will keep me happy and alive... it is negative energy that will harm me..."

With that said... Mr Bear... sir... eat yer donuts and live long and prosper... image
