Coinstar Morgans....grade them

The story behind these..... I work as a cashier at a local supermarket. I was helping a customer and right in front of the Coinstar machine and noticed some people cashing in tubs of coins. Once they had completed they took the tubs and the cash voucher to my lane and started to complain that it would take them all. I cashed out their voucher and told them I would buy what they had left from my drawer.
They proceeded to dump $72 dollars in dollars and half dollars on to my register (I'm sure my eyes lit up). I cashed them out and went to break. I went to the ATM pulled out some cash and bought it all at cost.
Totals: 3 Morgans....those 2 pictured and a 1890 CC that has a beat up rim.
1 1922 peace dollar.
14 MS quality 1964 Kennedys
2 crappy 1964s
5 silver clads
and the rest newer Kennedys

Coinstar machines won't take silver coins, spits them all out so nothing of true precious metal value. However, there may have been some good old cents or nickels.
I'm just curious to see what you think they grade.
I don't really care for the grade they were a face value to me and are staying in my collection...the CC I'm only selling to buy some other coins I'm interested in....
Here is the CC if you want to see that

Ahh, thank you LanLord. I did not know that, since I've never even seen a coinstar machine.
Steve
let me ask you, when they dumped the coins down and you spotted a 1 oz gold american eagle, would you have given this person $50 and told them thats the denomination like the back says or truthfully told them that was a 1 oz gold coin worth 1200+?????
Many members on this forum that now it cannot fit in my signature. Please ask for entire list.
I'm wondering...

I've had these coins for a few months now the only one I got today was the dime....these coins actually resparked my interest in coins and I joined this forum and started buying coins because of these.
<< <i>I would say congrats if you got those from the reject bin with no owner in sight, but you essentially told people, face to face, that their silver dollars and other silver pieces were worth face value. Granted they may have been willing to sell them as face when they didn't know what they were, but you clearly have the knowledge to have informed them, and instead you took advantage of them. That makes you no better than the dealers we constantly complain about for screwing grandma.

I agree.
I would of offered a "fair" price.

Being a young cashier I don't get payed too well....I spent $70 on a Morgan on ebay this week and have to watch what I eat now of I will not make it through the week. If I had worthy money I would have gave it to them or atleast a better portion. I am not a bad person I am just young and poor.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

I'm wondering too, maybe some non silver goodies for coinstar.

With something like that I probably would have told them it is gold cause I know that word in spanish and then gave it back.

<< <i>I don't know a lick of Spanish, but the word for silver is "plata." Either way, even offering them $15 for the Morgans would have been fair if you had no idea what they were actually worth. >>
I understand and at that point I didnt know the true value (this set of coins got me collecting). I didnt know there was a CC i didnt even know they were called morgans. Either way I had to pay face value for it at my register cause I couldnt buy it direct on the clock and I didnt know how to have them wait.

Just goes to show you can't fix stupid.
Mucho dinero por la plata. No esta una dollar. El coinos are muy oldo y consist de la plata. No esta moderno plated crapola. Oh!!! Bien! Bien! Es CC! Que? No, no, Senor...no es ChimiChanga...es Carson City. Mucho dinero, amigo!!! Andale! Andale! Vamos to el bricko y mortar shoppo por mucho dinero!!! Coinstar esta no bien...muy rip offo!
If you get a silver quarter in change from the guy at 7-11 are you going to give it back to him or are you going to keep it? When you get rolls of coins from the bank looking for silver do you go back to the bank and pay them the silver value of the coins you found?
Just because someone has silver coins in their Coinstar jar doesn't mean they were stolen.
And to call the OP a troll is shameful.

This thread really makes a person think "what would I do".
MY personal rule. Getting silver from the bank or cashier fair game. Banks do not know/care what coins they get or give out. Just as long as the amount is correct. The same with cashiers. Also the money in the till is not theirs it belongs to the business.
If I receive money from a customer, an notice something of interest, I make a comment. Most of the time they don't care.
Personally I would try to convey that the coins were worth more. Thought i am of Mexican descent i know very little Spanish.(Speedy Gonzales and the taco bell chihuahua were my Spanish teachers). Silver coins from the Coinstar, quaters, dimes, half-dollars, rare but happens. Morgans and Peace would cause me to call loss prevention. Have them get cameras on them before accepting them. The reason many people think they are stolen is cause every few months a news story comes out where robber cashes out some collectible coins at a store. Their is a news story about a man trying to spend a stolen gold coin at face value at a auto parts store. Unable to find it at the moment. I know it has been over more than 10 years. When I still had a 486sx/w 33mhz cpu.(with blazing fast 33.6k modem)
2nd Edit: Also congratulations on the find. Working in retail has made me bit cynical. If the customers are not out right shop lifting. The will "miss" read signs, move signs, try to haggle, or just be plain mean.
<< <i>He did nothing wrong >>
This is true
If this story is true I would wager that the OP just bought a jar full of stolen coins..
Just give a ring to your local Police Dept and see if they have a recent report of any coins
being stolen in a home burglary....
Or I can do some profiling and say the woman stole them from a house she was cleaning...

I noticed the goof up, too. Maybe while we're on the subject of language, it makes sense to slip in a little allusion, to wit: In this thread, The Iceman Cometh. I'm just waiting to see if, after this, he cometh back.

lol you are kidding right? How about handing them more money?
Geez the stories you read online.
Steve
By not trying to convey to those people that their silver coins were worth more than face value, the cashier may have closed doors not only for those uninformed people but himself. Having been more upfront as possible could have resulted in these people bringing either similar coins in later or referring friends with other coins of possible value to the "honest" and helpful cashier.
People place a high value on honesty and integrity when they encounter it, especially in a situation where they could have been taken advantage of easily, people may be uninformed but they usually aren't stupid.
Who knows what possible future "scores" may have been missed for the short term gain.
I won't both going into the lame communication issue.

It seems that many people place a higher value on honesty and integrity when those traits are exhibited by the other party. Otherwise it's the other party's fault for not being knowledgeable or, heaven forbid, speaking the language clearly enough.
You gotta love flexible morals.

Iceman ........ I hope you don't let these goody two shoes get to you. Airplanenut started a bunch of C****. What a bunch of self righteous hyprocrites on this board.
Further more, I dont' give a ratsss azz if I mispelled anything ....... and neither should you iceman.
But yes, I agree ........ the scum of the earth stole those coins before they entered your store. They don't deserve anyone paying them anything over face for stolen coins.
Simply Incredible!
The name is LEE!
Also working at a high theft store I know the local PD well and actually hang out with some of them. I asked one to look into the coins last night and nothing was found in the four cities around where I work.
I'm glad to see some people are on my side of this because last night I almost deleted myself from this forum due to the mass flaming of me.
To the people who treated me like a crook and a horrific person for doing this.... I hope you see that flaming people based on a single event and condemning them is wrong in itself. Reading a books first page doesn't tell you the story and if you base your opinions on that first page you might as well throw away the book.
<< <i>I agree. They tried to put them in the machine, which means they only wanted face value. >>
Yes, and then they were given the chance to get more. If someone goes to a coin dealer with a proof 1895 Morgan dollar and wants $1 because that's what it says on the reverse, the dealer is scum beyond belief if he pays that. They may have wanted only the dollar, but it's a dishonest act to give it to them. I once picked up a Morgan and Peace dollar from a bank. The teller told the man to go a few blocks away to the coin shop, and he declined. Fine, he had every opportunity to make a few more dollars and chose to give the coins up at face with full knowledge and understanding of the situation. In this case, the opportunity was never provided.

A hypocrite would say one thing and do another. If this came to me and I couldn't get out a word of Spanish (I know no part of the language) I would have either found another worker who could translate, or simply given them extra money when I paid for everything, whether they realized it or not. I'm somewhat surprised at the number of board members who have said or implied they would have done the same thing. Call me a hypocrite, call me self-righteous. I've been here long enough to establish what I would consider at stellar reputation. I wouldn't throw it away for a few bucks.
