People can't help it when someone only includes the first page in a story..
I truly hope your not naive enough to believe these coins are not stolen. If these were stolen by someone who regularly goes to the house there is a good chance they don't even know they are gone..
I will give you a word of advice.. The people on here aren't "holier than thou" types.. They just really don't like people taking advantage of other people which is what you've done..
Enjoy your new found riches.. I have a feeling it will be taken away in due time...
The only hole I found in your story was the amount of clad Kennedy halves left over.. Coinstar machines take clad halves..

I have 2 managers, a security guard and a few employees that can back the story up. Plus there are other ways of coming into old coins then stealing them. A relative dieing and cleaning out there house seems to be a common one everywhere. You all just SUSPECT theivery. I have had these coins for 2 months and normally if someone is robbed they know it. Unless these people clean up and put everything back where it is suppose to be the owner will know (which I think is kind of uncommon in theft).
Enjoying my new found riches isn't what I want. I want to enjoy the coins just as much as you all...

Unless it is ebay and the seller has a BIN of 300 dollars on something worth thousands....then it's okay to take advantage of an unknowing seller. Sadly, on these here forums it's almost like there are two sets of morals. The ones expressed in person and the ones expressed digitally. Consistency in the moral world has declined with 'stories' and 'excuses,' but seriously, I am with iceman, giving what he said was truthful. He couldn't give them anymore money than face or he would had been stealing out of his register, even temporary theft from his employer. He had to go to an ATM to do an exchange later on. They obviously wanted the money and did not want to wait around based on his expressing of them appearing disgruntled. You people judge character over these stories too promptly, but everybody holding a YOU SUCK award I would regard no different than the OP on these forums... iceman, stick around, people will cool off. Another new member recently went through some crud here with some members and he's still here. Hang in there, not everybody's out to judge your digital identity. You are after all, just a bunch of 0's and 1's.

Have a Merry Christmas... P.S.. I could care less if your story is true or not.. Just pointing out a flaw that stuck out...
This is a tough one, but to call Jeremy a hypocrite is not knowing Jeremy.
He is one of the fairest most honest folks on the board.
The board does have flexible morals. Just read a few of the threads. Buy something for nothing on e-bay and the seller renigs.....we get mad at the seller. A dealer tries to buy something for nothing, he's scum.
How does anyone know these coins were stolen??? I think its ludicris to think that since they are Hispanic, the coins are stolen. The other thing is to prove those coins were stolen evne if there were reports of coins being stolen in the area.
We need to look at the mirror ourselves BEFORE we go condeming people.
<< <i>I agree. They tried to put them in the machine, which means they only wanted face value. >>
Yes, and then they were given the chance to get more. If someone goes to a coin dealer with a proof 1895 Morgan dollar and wants $1 because that's what it says on the reverse, the dealer is scum beyond belief if he pays that. They may have wanted only the dollar, but it's a dishonest act to give it to them. >>
They didn't go to a coin dealer. They went to a Coinstar machine. If they went to a dealer they would be expecting professional advice because they thought their coins were worth more than face. They had "tubs of coins" per the OP. Out of all of those coins there were four silver dollars and 21 silver halves. Maybe these people were from a local church and they were converting the collection money that had accumulated into cash. Maybe they run a small business and get a lot of coins. That the coins were stolen is not the only explanation.
This almost makes me want to be a cashier at a grocery store. A lot of people think coin dealers are criminals for paying less than spot. If a person "not in the know", sells to someone who is "in the know", it's not a reflection of the buyer's criminal behavior (he's at work, remember ? ) , as much as it's a possible reflection of the seller's ignorance. (he's cashing out for food and it ain't Food4Less).
This isn't necessarily "MY VIEW".... I'm just trying to see this scenario from an objective point of view.
Congrats on your score. The 1880 S has been cleaned in my opinion. The 1896 is an AU. Is that a die crack on the '80 S , or a big scratch on the obverse ?
<< <i>Congrats on your score. The 1880 S has been cleaned in my opinion. The 1896 is an AU. Is that a die crack on the '80 S , or a big scratch on the obverse ? >>
It sadly is a large scratch...it has a couple large scratches and gouges but I still love the detail showing.
<< <i>If you ever find yourself as a cashier again and a Spanish speaker can not get their CC Morgans into the coinstar and you MUST help them, repeat this gringo Spanish:

or Hey man, you're in America, learn english and I'd be paying you what your coins are worth.
<< <i>I think its ludicris to think that since they are Hispanic, the coins are stolen.
Yup.
And being young and poor is no excuse for character issues. >>
Time to settle down. We're all human, and we all have character issues from time to time, by definition, as it were. Who here could honestly claim that he or she has NEVER been hypocritical or self-righteous? As a very wise man whom many believe to have been more than human once said, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone!"
I think our new member got the point. Iceman, I don't intend to speak for you, so let me put it this way: If I were you and this exact situation were to arise again (you should be so lucky, but that's another matter), I might at least think a second time about handling it at least a little differently. And if you would not, that is, imo, your prerogative. At the end of the day, I am a libertarian on these issues, and it is up to the individual to adjudicate these matters of explicit moral ambiguity.
So welcome back, and please hang around. There's a lot more to learn here!
