Anyone Else Hoarding 1905-O micro-O Dimes?

I've been snapping up this variety since my Barber mentor, Lindsay Ashburn, first turned me on
to the Barber dime series in the late 1990's. I'm closing in on a full roll by now with the majority in the G-VG
range. It is TOUGH to find the coin with the LIBERTY complete. I've accumulated less than a dozen at that
grade or above that are raw coins. Maybe once a year I find a nice example on the 'bay that has escaped
my competitors' attention (insert "happy dance"). I also picked up examples in PCGS 30 and 40 and made
NGC 12 and 25 myself.

So, who are you guys always bidding up "my" variety??

Nope, I sold the only one I ever found, an AG or G, to SeaEagle (Larry G.) for $20 as part of a group deal he bought. It's an interesting variety, but they seem to be relatively common in the lower grades.

  • No doubt one of the hardest varieties in any series that I collect to find in F (full Liberty) or better. I have 2 in my Barber dime inventory, one I grade a G-6, the other VG-8, but none in my collection (a date/mm set in which I don't care about varieties).

I have an EBay buddy (you'd recognize the EBay userid if you're a consistent Barber dime buyer there) who's the only other person I know who has a hoard of these to compare with yours (last time we discussed it, he had just over a roll, but I don't think his Fine count was in the double digits at that point). Another EBay pal has somewhere north of 10 but south of 20.

    So you're a Top 1%er, I bet!

Sometime last year someone posted a raw image of
a Micro O Dime - it was a raw coin - and looked every
    bit an AU 55 - maybe a 58.

No change in the PCGS POP's since then - no 55's
    and just one 58.....image...mine

    ...and no, Dimeman...it ain't for sale !!

I own the finest known 1905 Micro O PCGS ms 66 that I bought raw out of a Stacks auction. It is proof-like to boot.

  • Steve, neither of the people to whom I referred in my previous post is you, I'm pretty sure, since I know them both personally! They might not have been as active in buying Barber dimes on the Bay over the last year or two as they were, say, 3 or 4 years ago. But still, I bet you'd recognize them if you've been doing this for a while!

    Good luck assembling the roll!

I had five years ago in vf-au and sold them. Then I started my registry set and needed one. I finally got a VF30 a month or so ago.

I missed out on a MS63 for $700 a few years ago when a dealer friend of mine couldn't find me so he offered it to a collector friend of mine and he bought it raw. This guys collection is a houdge-poudge of grades anywhere between ag and bu. Anyway he showed me the coin and asked what I thought it would grade. When I saw it I couldn't believe it. It was beautiful. I offered to buy it. He wouldn't sell it. He was going to stick it in a whitman book and I begged him to have it graded. He doesn't belong to PCGS so he sent it in to anacs. It came 63 like I thought. He still will not sell it. And YES it would cross over to PCGS63 NO PROBLEM and maybe 64. It's that nice.

$700 for a micro-o.....brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it!

That's funny, I sold a nice PCGS VG08 to Larry at CoinFest. I look for them and cherrypick them when I can. I've put four or five into PCGS holders, all in the 4-8 grade range. I probably still have half a dozen or so around, the nicest might have graded Fine except for some heavy corrosion.

Tony, I believe I know the eBayer you speak of, he has the initials of a major west coast college in his userID. If I'm correct, then he is also a board member here.

Did that coin come out of the ground and straight grade ?

  • mr1931Smr1931S Posts: 6,415 ✭✭✭✭✭

The dug coin pictured should not straight grade. AU details, environmental damage. Coins that have been in the ground for many years have countless fine hairlines from the surfaces being abraded by silica in the soil. Still, that's a nice find, a very nice piece.

If you run across a PCGS XF40 with PCGS cert number 26751941, it was stolen from the PO. Just a heads up.

Nice to see this thread again. I recently cherrypicked an example with UNC details, there are lots of heavy rim nicks and hairlines from a light cleaning. I will probably send it in to our host even though I think there is no chance of a straight grade. These are the seller's pictures, I am going to try and image it myself this weekend.

I hope that no true collectors are hoarding anything because all that does is to make things worse for other collectors. Just look at the 1909-VDB in Matte Proof. One guy owns the market, and now the coin is essentially uncollectable. I don't care for what you want to do.

As a collector I am glad that I don't want one of these coins.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

@Dannyj74.... Welcome aboard... that coin is amazing for a dug coin.
I agree with Bill Jones... hoarding drives prices up and hurts collectors....Cheers, RickO
