A new Liberty Nickel ... guess the grade and comments appreciated

pursuitoflibertypursuitofliberty Posts: 7,874 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well, I think I got kinda lucky on this one.

For those who don't follow the series closely, the 96 is a really tough coin ... and finding one with a nice strike
and unmolested surfaces has eluded me for some time.

But patience and a little negotiating paid off.

I just picked her up from the post office an hour and a half ago ... and I sure am happy. image

Without further ado ... here she is

feel free to guess the grade and/or comment ... and/or post yours!

That is a lightly toned MS63, and, YOU SUCK! If not for the crud near the top on the obverse, it would easily go 64! It has details on the left corn cob on the reverse and that's hard to find!

Just kidding Todd, I'm jealous! Very nice pickup. I need to learn to be patient like you...

The only tougher non-key is 1894. Those seems to be nearly as tough as a nice 1912-S, 85 or 86.

...Great strike from new dies and well preserved.

It probably doesn't have a high technical grade but what's not to like?

From here, I say 64. Luster could give it a bump, though. It sure has a great strike.

    *Nice* coin!

Nice tone and a 64 from the picture. It seems to me that many of these that are shown here are dull and drab. I like this coin.

I agree with almost everything said here -- except i'd put the 1898 ahead of the 96 as well (at least in my target grade of MS-64) and also fully struck 12-Ds are nearly impossible below MS-65/66 and even then they are tough!

I also like the coin at the MS-63 grade, but would not be surprised if it got holdered AU-58; it looks identical to a coin we bought as a MS-63 which came back as a AU-58 by pcgs. Here's one of ours in MS-64:

Thanks for all the comments !!

It is a PCGS graded coin, and is graded (acurately IMO) as a 63. In hand I don't think this one could be looked at as a 58, although I do have many 58's that are sometimes confussed as 63's, and I have owned a few 62/3's that are really 58's. From a picture of course, that is nearly impossible to discern.

IMO, the origionality of the coin is wonderful, with varigated shades of golden, steel and bronze colorations. The strike is strong, with minor high point weakness on a few curls, and a touch more on the reverse on the left corn. The luster is strong, but slightly muted in it's original toning. The surfaces are relatively clean with only a few minor distractions.

I agree with Cladking's assesment that the coin was struck from fresh dies, and has been well preserved. I also do not consider it a high "technical grade", but it has a lot to love. For this series, I do not generally colelct high grades anywya, so for me this is the ideal coin.

Speety is spot-on about his comments as well. A well struck original 98 or 12-D are rare birds indeed. BTW Speety, I really like your 64. Looks like it has a nice natural skin with nice luster and surfaces. Thanks for posting her for comparison.

    Anyway, thanks again !!

I could see this coin in a 4 holder on a good day. The nicest one of this date I've seen was Dale Friend's in PC 6. The coin was flawless, and worth quite a bit of money. The mid 90s are tough coins to find nice. With very few exceptions, coins from all mints made in 1912 I have found to be softly struck.
