A very pretty coin to the naked eye, I was interested in other's input. In particular are the spots under the feather area reason for concern as far as possible PVC. And what do you think PCGS gave this, while you're at it.

    Spots harmless.

It should be 63 due to strike, but I think 64.

  • To me, the spots do not appear to be pvc. They seem to be almost like small milkspots seen on the ultra moderns. Could be light watermarks as well.

The coin has good eye appeal and is very nice.

I always have a tough time grading buffer nicks. To me, it seems like there is flatness above the tie on the braid. Don't know if this indicates weakness in strike or minor rub. So, either au-58 or ms 64.

I'll go with MS63 also. Strike a bit weak for a P-mint, IMO, though maybe that isn't unusual for this particular date?. I'd be more concerned with that than those light spots, which may be PVC or some other light haze.

BINGO! The Wexler/Pope/Flynn guide book calls the 29-P 'a true stike rarity' and Bowers' Buff and Jeff book estimates that only 10% are either well or fully struck (w/ 0% fully struck). Look at some of the upcoming offerings on TT and you can see it can be even worse.

I would give it a 64. The strike is very typical for the date with a nice reverse (sometimes nearly a full strike) but little detailing above the knot. This is actually one of the tougher dates in the entire series to find with any detail at all in that area-unusual for a Philly Mint coin as strike and, more commonly, worn out dies are usually associated more with the Branch Mint coins.

Most definitely a 64 imo. Very nice eye appeal with an above average reverse strike.

Thanks for the input and guesses. From a strictly technical stand point I can't say I disagree with the 64 guesses (although I still struggle to capture the full luster in my pics, of which this coin has plenty). For this date it seems that the TPGs give a bump for any real detail in the braid, and PCGS graded this a 65.
