The United States Mint is offering previously available products for sale, as well as last chance opportunities for current products until December 19, 2008. Many of these products were taken off sale at previously stated dates; however, while preparing to move inventory to a new fulfillment center, excess inventory was identified. Other products, that are currently available, will be discontinued.
This is a limited-time, first come, first served offer and no household limits will apply.
At least now we know the bullion coins were not part of the last chance sale so people will have to pay the normal prices. I think this last chance sale may have slowed sales of bullion as people expected lower prices and now that it hasn't happened either they pay regular prices or don't buy.
So this could be a slow sales week as a result, but we will see in the next mint sales report.

I think you may be right, although really nothing has changed. the discontinued lines are discontinued, and when they run out they're gone.
If one had an opportunity to purchase a Buffalo gold four-coin set which would be the best value (potential for monetary appreciation) to purchase? The proof set or the uncirc set?

Thanks for the response, but why would the uncircs be a better value than the proofs?

In my opinion, stick with the proof .... a lot more proof collectors for this series than unc. & if the sales numbers indicate, not much difference in the numbers sold.
"Bongo drive 1984 Lincoln that looks like old coin dug from ground."
Thanks for the response, but why would the uncircs be a better value than the proofs?
This isn't a question where a definitive answer can be given. Just opinion. There are a few reasons why the uncirculateds could be a better value than the proofs.
(1) lower issue prices. The unc. coins are less expensive to purchase, so if they reach the same price level as the proofs on the secondary market, they'll be a better value.
(2) lower mintages?: This is not a given right now, but based on last reported sales figures, the unc numbers are 1oz: 2,854 1/2: 2,281 1/4: 3,381 1/10: 12,231 set: 4,823
the 1oz proofs are way out of the park right now. on the 1/2 oz, the proof compares very favorably at the moment, and might prove to be the better "value". the 1/4: proofs sales are about 20% higher. 1/10: neck and neck (though unc singles are sold out, proof singles still available).
Anyway, typically if there's a BIG difference in mintages for proof and unc, the secondary market favors lower mintage uncirculated coins over their higher mintage proof brothers. Here, with the exception of the 1oz coins, the numbers are pretty close. If they stay close, they might prove to be equally good buys. Proofs could do better, uncs could do better, hard to tell at the moment.
all good insight...sales numbers will obviously change as the Mint closes out these coins...I wonder how many they have left...thanks for taking the time to respond!
Don't forget to add in the numbers from the 08-08 sets for the Unc 1/2.....
good point. what about the celebration coin? should that be added to the 1oz unc? I think someone else had posted that it wasn't a "w" coin, but I'm not sure if that's accurate-- does anyone know?
I just received a second backorder email from the US Mint regarding the 1/4 oz uncirc plat. This one gives the date of Dec 05; first one gave the date of Nov 21 as the expected ship date. I ordered around 7:20 pm on Oct 21.
Found this old thread. It's an interesting read about things I wish I had a chance to relive.
Oy vey. Coulda shoulda woulda...................
But in late 2008 I was looking at my Plant in Newark, Delaware closing down. By around April of 2009 my Corporation would be in Bankruptcy. I ended up in a new job in a new State with a reorganized renamed Corporation. We've survived the storm of 09 but more trouble could be just ahead.
What a blast from the past! Man I remember those days. What fun for moderns. Those were the days of ericj's epic moderns thread.
When i think of how many fractional gold buffaloes that I sold for so much less than they ended up being worth a few years later it is pretty sickening. At least I kept a good number of them. Funny but I still have one four coin proof and one four coin unc gold buffalo set still sealed in the original mint box from all those years ago. I don't imagine that there's too many of those floating around today.
Shoulda, coulda, woulda indeed... It sure would have been nice to have really backed the truck up on stocks after March of 09. So much is Just impossible to predict of course.
Anyway, really enjoyed seeing that pop up. Some of my most fun coin memories are from those years. Thanks for posting.

2008 Plat UNC-W sets are gone for good! "PRODUCT IS UNAVAILABLE" and it is on the No Longer Available list.
This was not true, I remember this item went back on sale for two weeks before any one saw it. I sold $45k of it in 1 week on fee bay as fast as I could post them and they where sold all buy it now's very few knew about it, That was a fun and good month.
If any of these coins would come back in demand I'd have my mortgage paid off, a porsche in the garage, and out of state tuitions covered for my kids lol.

Which specific coins do you wish would come back in demand?
I managed to get one 1/4 oz gold Buffalo. Still have it-it fits nicely with my set of proof Buffalos since it's about the same size as a nickel. Sure wish I would have gotten more.

Hang on if you can 92vette! PMs will go on a tear. It's only a question of when. When the herd is running, sell.

The Celebration coins do not have the W on them...same as bullion just in a box...

The celebration Buffalo gold coin is a bullion strike without the W mintmark. Therefore its sales numbers shouldn't count in the Buffalo mintages.
Oops...Casman already answered this.
BTW...thanks for the interesting analysis by NYCounsel, 7over8, Ericj and others. This has been an informative thread.
you're welcome... I think we all benefit from these discussions.
