I am not seeing bullion listed in the last chance sale so I am also expecting no lower prices on bullion. Perhaps if that is the case and people see the bullion at the same price then they will start to sell out.

Also wouldn't it be a PR disaster to have a Platinum 1/2 UNC for $619 on Friday and then $410 on Saturday? Sure we would all love that lower price but how can you drop things like that and not expect massive returns? Some will order what they did the past few days all over and guess what, send back the old orders.

So sure, I hope they drop prices and I can get an actual order in before the website freezes like with the first spouse, but chances are if they drop the prices that far every credit card will be pulled and every piggy bank broken, and the website will melt down like it did yesterday on far less orders.

Anyway I think the mint did a great thing for all of us by ending these series of coins, it is a historic move as I see it and 2008 while a bad year for the mint financially perhaps it will be remembered for the great coins the mint released. It may take some time for people to see this IMO but looking back in say 2010 when there are far fewer series to collect they will wish for the old days, at least some people will.

I only recently discovered coinnews.net, but they really seem to do a nice job with their articles. link

I agree. They don't need to discount these coins- for all the complaints about premium over melt, the current prices are basically in line with historical markups on these coins. They were never intended to be just bullion, any more than the silver American Eagles they sell for more than 2x melt are, and pricing them at spot would fail to reflect the Mint's production and carrying costs. What's the markup on a silver proof set? I'm not saying there isn't some room for a lower premium-- there probably is-- but even though these coins are discontinued, they AREN'T spoons. The Mint doesn't need a blue light special to create a market for them. They should keep prices as they are. If you want them, great. If you don't, no problem. Plenty of us see upside based on the low mintages at current prices, for platinum and for gold.

Congrats on the 100+ numismatic thread

Thanks! Although I didn't really do anything more than reprint and link to the Dave Harper's report. He broke this story, and it's a really big one for a lot of us.

I disagree. I belive that statement refers to any 08 coins that are left but not on the list. While the coins not sold will be melted immediatly if not sold by dec. 19th statement is referring to coins on the list. >>

That would be to good to be true!

Of those that don’t sell, Brunhart says, “We’re going to be doing a significant detrashing and melting (of) the products that do not sell by Dec. 19. Those products will be immediately broken down and sent to the melter.”

seems unambiguous. i suppose he could have been talking about the clearance items as opposed to the discontinued bullion lines, but I'm not sure what the value of melting spoons and the rest of the clearance stuff would be.

He also said some items would remain on sale until June when these also would be melted. Presumable he was talking about any 08 items.

This is what it says on the mints web site in the press release.

"WASHINGTON - The United States Mint is moving its products to a new fulfillment center and will use the opportunity to clear its shelves and offer several coins, coin sets, bags and rolls for the last time to customers. Additionally, the United States Mint is discontinuing several products that will be offered for the last time."

To me it makes no sense to mention discountinued items in the same press release as the "sale" if the discountinued items either will not be discounted or still offered for sale after the sale ends.
Wouldnt they just make two seperate announcements?

At least it'll be collectible soup and cereal.
  • I believe the US Mint likely has in inventory several millions of dollars worth of various bullion coins on that list.

I'm sure after the past years whip-saw action in PM prices they would like to get rid of these asap after which I expect we will see an end to the 30 day return policy for bullion products.

I estimate they had over 1 million in returned Platinum during the crash in platinum prices from early July to mid August.

I hadn't focused on the melt date question, and it's a good one.

The article which started this thread was not an official Mint announcement, but from what Dave Harper wrote. Looking at the announcements from the US Mint website, there were 2 press releases made November 10.

    FIRST PRESS RELEASE

United States Mint Offers “Last Chance Sale” to Clear Warehouse Shelves

Agency Prepares to Move Fulfillment Center

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint is moving its products to a new fulfillment center and will use the opportunity to clear its shelves and offer several coins, coin sets, bags and rolls for the last time to customers. Additionally, the United States Mint is discontinuing several products that will be offered for the last time. Sales of these products begin Saturday, November 15, 2008, at 12:01 a.m. (ET). Many of these products will never be available again from the United States Mint. The sale will end at 5 p.m. (ET) on December 19, 2008.

The United States Mint is transferring its contractor-operated call center and fulfillment facility from Memphis, TN, and Plano, TX to Plainfield, IN, near Indianapolis. The "Last Chance Sale" is intended to clear as much old inventory as possible from the existing system to facilitate the transfer.

The transition in early January is expected to be seamless, and customers should encounter no service problems. Ordering information via the United States Mint Web site, telephone and by mail will remain the same:

The "Last Chance Sale" will be a limited-time, first come, first serve offer, available online and by phone. There will be no household order limit. No damaged products will be sold. There will be a seven-day return policy from the date of receipt if the product is delivered to the customer damaged. No returns will be accepted unless a product is damaged in shipment. If a return is made because the product is damaged, the United States Mint cannot guarantee a replacement, and a customer's payment will be refunded.

The sale of these products will increase previously stated "final" sales figures. For products with a maximum mintage or product limit, the United States Mint will not sell coins or products that exceed the established limit.

Press Release re: Last Chance Sale

    SECOND PRESS RELEASE

United States Mint Embarks on Major Update of Its Numismatic Product Portfolio

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint is conducting a comprehensive, top-to-bottom review of its numismatic product portfolio to focus next year on those products collectors most appreciate and order most often.

"We are responding to the collector community which has spoken loudly and clearly," said United States Mint Director Ed Moy. "Customers have told us there are just too many products. We agree, and it's time the United States Mint trims down and concentrates on the products our customers love most."

Trimming the 2009 portfolio will afford the United States Mint the opportunity to focus resources on its core products. It will spotlight offerings with broad appeal, such as its annual United States Mint Proof Sets. With fewer products to manufacture, the United States Mint will be able to offer proof sets and other products earlier in the calendar year beginning in 2010, making them available for customers to purchase for more occasions.

The United States Mint relied principally on the number of units sold in determining which products or product lines have been most popular with collectors and other customers. More than 550 individual coin and medal products were evaluated; nearly 200 of those coin and medal products will remain in the new portfolio.

The United States Mint will analyze its products each year to ensure the best portfolio is maintained.

Second Press Release: Trimming the offerings

Based on these press releases, I think it might be an open question as to whether the discontinued series are part of the clearance sale, or if the final sale date will be December 19.

    David Harper's blog said:

The sale will conclude at 5 p.m. Dec. 19, but some products are likely to be gone well before then.

Of those that don’t sell, Brunhart says, “We’re going to be doing a significant detrashing and melting (of) the products that do not sell by Dec. 19. Those products will be immediately broken down and sent to the melter.”

The clearance sale is part of a major re-evaluation of the Mint’s product line. Brunhart says the product offerings will be reduced from more than 550 available in 2008 to roughly 200.

Leftover 2008 products will stay on sale until June, when they will get the same detrashing and melting treatment.

    Dave Harper Blog

Looking at this, it seems to me we've got 2 announcements.

    (1) reopening sales of old inventory as a clearance sale, closing December 19, with unsold inventory to be melted.

    (2) Mint is discontinuing certain product lines, which Dave Harper reports are:

    Discontinued Products

United States Mint Presidential $1 Coin Historical Signature SetsTM
United States Mint Presidential $1 Coin – Individual Proof CoinsTM
American Eagle Platinum Uncirculated Coins (all options)
American Eagle Platinum Proof 1⁄2, 1⁄4, 1/10, and Four-Coin Sets
American Eagle Gold Uncirculated 1⁄2, 1⁄4, 1/10, and Four-Coin Sets
American Buffalo Uncirculated Gold Coins (all options)
    American Buffalo Proof 1⁄2, 1⁄4, 1/10, and Four-Coin Sets
50 State Quarters® First Day Coin Covers (continue through 2008)
Greetings From America Portfolios and Card Sets
    Coin and Die Sets
    Collectible Spoons

It looks to me like this stuff would be part of the leftover 2008 products that will stay on sale until June, when they will get the same detrashing and melting treatment.

  • nycounselnycounsel Posts: 1,229 ✭✭
If my last post is right, this changes the gameplan on these quite a bit.

    (1) this eliminates what we've been confused about-- return period would not be impacted for 2008 product lines that are being discontinued.

    (2) no repricing would be necessary for those discontinued products, as they are not part of the clearance sale.

    (3) presumably, sales of 2008 products on the discontinued list would continue to be available until sellout or until they would normally be pulled from sale. Dave Harper's article says "Leftover 2008 products wil stay on sale until June, when they will get the same detrashing and melting treatment."

    That changes things.

First, I think the current groupthink is that the Mint is selling remaining 2008 platinum proofs and uncirculateds, and that no more will be minted. I think that remains correct; based on the failure to hit sellout so far, it seems like they have enough inventory to meet demand, and there doesn't seem to be much sense in minting more of a coin slotted to be discontinued.

Second, ... well, there is no second. The landscape has shifted again, all items are showing as no longer available. This is like playing a game where the rules are constantly changing.

I don't think the mint can legally lower the price of the bullion coins without notice so I am not expecting any lower prices. Do I hope that I'm wrong? Sure, I will order up what I have and send back the stuff at the old prices like everyone else.

But I don't think they can do it so I am not holding my breath on that. Also i will be shocked if they are holding old bullion to put back up at low prices and harm past collectors like that. I was hoping the mint was going to eliminate these programs like this but wasn't going to announce it until next year before they would have started them up again with 2009 stuff and after all the coins had already been sold.

The way it is now there are more questions than answers and nobody has any idea what they are up to.

I am also surprised nothing is on backorder yet after this announcement either, either people expect lower prices or they are broke from the collapse of the financial system.

Sounds like a maximum of 1500 sets or less were produced and I wouldn't be returning them. Mine are staying in my safe deposit box to age and mature.

This is a great thing! Less worthless sets and the Mint will be a Mint and not a producer of 500+ different "collectible" items.

But, but, but ... what will Jimmy Gerstel have to sell on his Treasure Hunter Show? Will he have to go to the Treasury for a bailout like Amex?

Looks like the Buffs too. I may have to order another set if they're cheap enough since I ordered a few on Monday. That way I've got an order that can be returned within 30 days so I desire.
  • nycounselnycounsel Posts: 1,229 ✭✭
I don't understand this at all. Even with the news these will be discontinued, it seems impossible to believe that ALL these would sell out on the same day.

If it's a repricing, that's equally difficult to understand-- why would they reprice this stuff, especially given the return window?

    This is bizarre.
    Dan
  • nycounselnycounsel Posts: 1,229 ✭✭
It also looks like the American Eagle gold proofs are showing as unavailable. Those aren't part of the discontinued program, and I don't know why those would sell out.

Maybe it's a website issue, or maybe the Mint is repricing the bullion issues after all?

If it's a repricing, can we expect sales to go dark long enough for the open return window to close, and then have a short sale period in late December?

If they reprice immediately, I would think it would result in chaos... it would give an incentive to return any recently received orders and place a new order at a discount price.

    One possible scenario:

    1) Lower the prices.
    2) Everybody returns their recently-bought gold & platinum, and they order at the lower prices.
    3) The Mint refunds the returns, but does NOT ship any of the new orders because the gold and platinum suddenly needs to be diverted elsewhere ?
  • jmski52jmski52 Posts: 23,297 ✭✭✭✭✭
If they are repricing the bullion coins, it's only because they will be included in the sale. If you return any of your orders now, you still have a replacement or refund option.

On the sale items, all sales are final, so if you plan on returning anything, it might be a whole lot safer to return it now, before the sale begins. Or, you can trust the Mint to do right by you. Good Luck with that.
