Bank refuses coins

1946Hamm1946Hamm Posts: 805 ✭✭✭✭✭
A friend of mine had about a hundred dollars worth of kennedy halves all clad that are discolored in a fire. Not bad just blotchy discoloring. No bubbles, warping or damage and the bank refused to take them. I didn't know that a bank could refuse to take them. I know if I had an account at a bank and they refused them, I would find another bank. What say you ?

Did they say that they thought they were fake? I can see why some banks would think fire damaged coins would be fake. Might have to head to coinstar...

The real answer is that there is no law that says private banks have to accept your money. Obviously that is their business, but they are under no obligation, nor is any other business, to take your cash, no matter what form its in.

..........talk to the manager. why should you have to spend 9% to trade in the halves at coinstar? especially if you have an account at that bank.image BLASPHEMERS!!

    Thats a B-I-N-G-O!

Our economy has become so spoiled that few are aware that a bank does not even have to deal with you if they don;t want to!

  • I never have a problem at Bank of America. Sometimes, I take in as much as $1500 in quarters or halves. Another option that I sometimes use if I have a bunch of mixed denominations is Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union where I live. They have coin machines that are free for account holders, but you can only redeem up to $100 per day. Fortunately, there are 5 offices within in 20 minutes of me, and you don't have to be in the employ of the school system to open an account.

Use them as a down payment on a new SUV.

I'm sure they would take them.

Is getting some wrappers and rolling them himself is out of the question? It's not like it would take more than a couple of minutes to do so.

The bank may do as it pleases... roll them and take them in... less chance of being rebuffed.... or go to a free coinstar... Cheers, RickO

  • Many grocery chains have have self check lanes . if yours accepts halves , shop there .
also good as tips at restaurants . Self serve gas stations are also useful , after you've
pumped in $22 . how can they refuse? Money orders at post office may be another way
out, after they printed your M.O. Other similar options exist .

Spend them or pay your tax bill with them. If my bank refuses any coins that i bring in-I would quickly find another bank.

What reason sis they give for refusing to take the coins?

I can see if they only take loose coins at certain hours, or have you roll them first. I would ask to speak to the manager.

You could always clean them up with soap and water.

The other option is to just spend them a little at a time.

  • I have had a bank refuse to take a few Kennedy halves because of fire damage as well. Ended up throwing a few away as it wasn't worth the hassle to try to redeem them.

Years back I used the service offered by the Treasury Dept. and sent in $660 something in fire damaged coins. There were many that were melted together and many partial coins. I kept a few for soveniers but later on had little need for them and was stuck with them at that point. On some the copper layer melted out and the two thin steel layers were stuck together. I may still have one somewhere, if I can find it I'll post a pic.
Witty sig line currently under construction. Thank you for your patience.

Burnt coins won't clean up with soap and water. Been there, tried that.

Thanks for the responses. I will tell him to try a coinstar. They are not that bad. Just spotted and splotchy looking. This particular bank will not take rolled coins of any kind.

Never heard of a bank refusing rolled coins. I would look for a new bank if I were you.

Doesn't surprise me a bit that they won't take 'em. Our banks were sick and tired of Kennedy returns back when silver was $6/oz.

I ran into that problem in the video arcade business. People would exchange bent or damaged quarters for good ones. The bank stopped taking them, so we stopped exchanging them in the arcade...

Out the bank. I'd like to know the name of the institution (and branch) that refuses to accept coinage from an account holder.
  • fishcookerfishcooker Posts: 3,446 ✭✭
Washington Mutual has many branches here that don't accept coins. They are (were?) basically manned ATM's.

Maybe that is why they went under!

CoinStar can be used for free is some circumstances. The ones in our local grocery stores are free if you get gift cards for the store (or other vendors on the list) with the coins.

Commerce Bank has coin counters that are free (even to non-customers)!
I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff will be coming down for quite a while!

I had the same problem with some Ikes a while back

those things were cursed. from the moment I touched them everything went wrong. ending with them being stolen by a USPS employee once I finally found someone to take them off my hands

many years ago my Grandpa accidentally tossed the reciepts into a fire. No bank would take the change and I remember sitting around the kitchen table and scrubbing them so the bank you take them. Every time I see a burnt coin I think of that time.
