A smelly visit to the coin shop.
Some coin collectors are known for their poor personal appearance. Today I ran into one at the local coin shop that went far beyond that.
This individual was standing near the type coin case I want to see. As I moved closer I was nearly overcome by this individual's BO.
No purchases today.
Wow! That was really bad!

He probably hasn't changed his shirt since that show in Baltimore this summer;......when it was seventeen million degrees inside that building!
At the Macon, GA show this January, I found the room very crowded, and smaller than I was accustomed to. I usually only do the big national shows, but even the NC state shows were in bigger rooms than this one. It was a fair sized room but the aisles were kind of narrow, and there was a lot of humanity packed into the room. Most of it middle-aged, overweight white male humanity.
While I fall into the "middle-aged, overweight white male" category myself, at least I know my way around a razor and a deodorant stick.
Soap is not a foreign concept to me.
Some of my fellow GA numismatists, on the other hand, apparently have not discovered it yet.
Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.
Besides for the foreign novelty of soap to some dealers, I have also noticed how many coin show attendees on both sides of the aisles conveniently neglect to wash their hair, consequently festering a grease trap on top of their heads that would rival any fryer at McDonalds. Unless you're one specific dealer from Michigan washing your hair should be quite easy and take less than a few minutes each time.

Hey, I resemble that remark!

That can also be arranged.

I'm definitely no fan of cigarette smoke but I'll take that over some of the foul smells I've experienced at coin shows.

I know that there have been times i've been interested in a rare coin...but then the stench hits me...and all I want to do is run away to get fresh air. The coin becomes unimportant when you feel that you cannot breathe properly.
There has to be a story behind this!

I can easily handle cigarette smoke although I try to avoid it. Soap dodgers are a different story entirely. Some old codgers at our local coin show must not shower or launder their clothes for weeks at a time. I end up relocating to the other side of the building.

<< <i>The good news for you is that the guy with the foul odor was just visiting the same shop you were in. Imagine if you were set up at a table at a coin show and your neighboring dealer carried the same repulsive odor. It made staying around your own bourse table a miserable experience.

would that be justification for refund of table fees?

While the big fat smelly guys sit down with 2/3's of there azz hanging off the chair at the local coin shows with pappers scattered across the entire dealer show case is irratating to me, i do not Fabreeze them. I just stroll on by and feel sorry for the dealer. Hover rounds have opened up the world to so many new people. No wonder the shop at home channels have problems now. Mobility to the masses.

They're in every state, and not just at coin shops/shows.

<< <i>I had a co-worker like that. It was so bad I reported him to a manager and they had to break the bad news. He was really surprised and denied that he smelled. We had to get HR involved so that he would either start wearing deodorant or quit.

One guy at my work would put a bar of soap and a deodorant stick on people's desk if they stunk it up too bad.

People with BO and death breath seldom get the hint. They have to be confronted in such a manner as not to incite One of the things that Minions of The Man™ need to learn where I work is how to tell their employees that there are complaints about their hygiene. In many cases, there are cultural barriers to self-awareness of this situation.
Best thing to do when walking into a shop and being driven off by the aura of a customer is to make an appropriate face that the guy behind the counter can see and interpret correctly and tell him you'll be back later. Chances are he'll sympathize with you and you already will have broken the ice when you return. A funny thing to do would be to go to a nearby pharmacy and get a small container of Vicks rub, go back to the store, smear some under your nose and offer a hit to the dealer.

We have had a few like this too.....one is a woman, who sounds like a man and is HUGE and wears spandex a lot
The rest have all been from some other country (ahem.....they weren't named Ghandi but they could have been
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
I could tell other stories which are worse. The B.O. thing IS annoying, but I keep in perspective.

Don't furriners have a tendency to wear the same clothes over n over?
<< <i>I wouldn't complain. When I was in Japan, a guy who was really wasted came into the car of the train on which I was riding. He made some grunting sounds, whipped it out, did his thing, and left the car at the next exit.
