The eBay brain trust cracks me up.

They have started masking part of the cert number in item specifics. Yet they still require images of the slab which, of course, has the cert number on it. image

That sounds like the way they would do things.

With the ebay fee increase I'm hopeful that this will be the spark that sets off a competitive forum. Right now they think they deserve a bidder share of the profits that the sellers. --Jerry

I knew what you meant, and I agree.

For Darksiders like me, though, it would have to be a competitor who could not only match eBay for traffic, but also global coverage.

That might be some big shoes to fill, at least in the near future. I would love to see it happen, though.

gunbroker.com thrives because ebay doesn't allow firearms. It would be much harder with ebay still competing but if word got around that better deals were on coinzip.com or whatever the emergent competitor was, then it might work. --Jerry

I can only hope that somebody with some horsepower (like Google) will decide to get into the auction business and compete with Ebay.

In the meantime we are stuck with the nitwits.

Obviously another example of the person that was supposed to bring the brain to work that day so everyone could share being negligent in their duties.

The previous custodian of the brain accidentally flushed after dropping it off for the next custodian.

Either way, you didn't say that this shocked you, so I assume it doesn't.

Russ ... there has been a change to that policy...this is what was told to me:

After listening to our sellers and their suggestions, we have made the
decision that not all certified coins are required to show a front and
back image. Certified coins with a date of 1980 or later are now not
required to show images at all. Certified coins with a date of 1979 or
earlier will still be required to show front and back images.

I'm missing something here. Why would the coins date have anything to do with the policy?

I suppose they feel anything after 1980 is considered "modern junk"image

  • It's damned strange, as they don't track the #'s. I've sent report after report of a certain sellers Shill bidding on pieces already won; their answer is that they DON't track the #'s.... Go figure?

I actually think it was sellers of modern bullion who complained loud enough that eBay relented and allowed them to use generic images. Not that I disagree with the previous answer too.

Thanks Sean for that perspective on policy changes. I didn't consider the "Squeaky Wheel Gets the Oil" as it pertains to generic images/duplicate items with little numismatic significance image

I hope I do not offend anyone with that wording as it pertains to numismatics.

I just looked at one of Cameron's auctions, for a sample slab.

The cert number info says " **MPLE "

The post 1980 rule is a seperate rule change unrelated to the OP. It is so I don't have to take seperate photos of every one of the 500 MS65 and MS66 Andrew Jackson dollars that I'm selling for pocketchange. It would make listing these low/no profit coins undoable.

However, Russ's original post is applicable to the pre 1980 coins that require a photo of the slab but for some reason they are obscuring the cert number. Maybe they are planning to fuzz out the cert number on the slabs. But if they do that, why require a photo of the slab as they would allow a small fuzzy photo w/o a cert number which could be stolen from anywhere.

They just don't get coins, and don't want to learn. They refuse to accept the fact that the buy/sell spreads in the coin business do not support giving ebay $10% and paypal 3% and still being profitable for the seller w/o screwing the buyer...but that's another thread.

I got a similar answer from my antique mall, when they decided to start charging a 10% commission in addition to the rent. I told them my margin was barely ten percent on some of the US material. They told me to up my prices, and wondered why I tried to stay at Redbook price or below it, when Redbook is just a guide. (The guide most members of the general public use on the sort of material I sell.)

Actually, the antique mall owner did bring up some valid points, and I understand her wanting to keep her own business viable.

I still was gonna walk. Not really in protest over the commission- that's pretty much within the bounds of normalcy in the antique biz. I was just thinking of closing it up and going all-Internet, anyway.

They didn't want me to go, though. I'm the closest thing there is to a B&M coin dealer in about a 70-mile radius. Naturally they wanted to keep me. So they gave me a good discount on the rent (though I still will be paying the 10% commission).

Hey in the old days there where brainiacs that masked out the cert number in on the slab, but listed it in the description. Can you say brain fart!!!
  • SeattleSlammerSeattleSlammer Posts: 10,048 ✭✭✭✭✭
Of course it's a silly requirement. But it's also silly that so many here complain about it (as well as the many other silly requirements) yet keep on sending their money to Ebay. Not unlike complaining about PCGS' grading yet resubmitting the same coin multiple times. You are free to take your business elsewhere. But if you choose to stay, just stop whining about it. It's undignified.

Ebay is great!!! (seriously, I freakin' love Ebay...)
