something other than modern,i'm willing to go to $300 if price is right.problem is that i am just not familiar with early coinage.I can't go to early, but is there something i can buy now (slabbed) that will appreciate in value in twenty years? i would love to buy ban SLQ any years suggested?
I'd buy some junk silver and wait till it doubled, then sell it. Then get into searching for VAMs and slowly buy all the Hitlist 40 you can find and when they are recognized at PCGS, triple that money. BEfore you know it retire wealthy.
Here is a 3 cent nickel I just bought for $90. If you look around, maybe you can find two. It's graded AU-58 but looks like most 65s, imo. (The reverse is on par with the front)
I can't think off too many pre 1900 coins you can get for under $100 that are this nice.

I agree with Tom if you don't know what you want then hold till it yells "BUY ME". Something out there will be just what you need when you see it. Then your on the way to a collection.
I thought the idea to look through some coins at JJTeaparty was a good one ... maybe several other sites as well
BUT ... based on you question and the way I read it, I would look and learn a bit more before I dropped a dime anywhere.
Figure out a design or two that you like, and then narrow your search ...
Read up a little on the series ... maybe ask a few more questions here ...
Then select a grade range you can be comfortable with ... maybe it's a EF Seated Liberty Quater, or a Ch AU Standing Lib'??? Of course make sure those grades are available in your range ... but I think it's important to have a grade in mind ... because if, say a VF (insert any grade) coin isn't enough overall detail for you, you probably wont be happy with the coin in the long run ...
Then, IMO, try to find a less common date in the most original, attractive state you can around that grade in your price range ...
Be patient and keep the powder dry, but when the one you have now been learning about and seeking speaks to you ...
pull the trigger.
Hope the hunt is worth the prize!

Regardless, the best advice given to me is to buy what you like...
