Mine actually arrived today. That Steve guy is one fast sob. Now UPS is holding them hostage!!!

Will rip and scan tomorrow night.
  • Ok my scanner is not working for some reason. In 84 I got a Fleer Mattingly and Ryan. The Mattingly has 9 corners but maybe 8.5 centering. The Ryan is a sure 9. Maybe a 10

What was the condition on the 77 opc cards? Also, was the gum stuck to the card it was on?

Got my packs from Steve Hart today as well. Nothing earth shattering, but definitely a fun rip. A few cards from my 1983 Topps pack were damaged during packaging back in '83, including a fairly well-centered Mike Schmidt. Too bad the right edge was mangled! Here are the other highlights:

1977 OPC: Fred Lynn, Jim Rice, George Foster, Dave Winfield
1978 Topps: Bobby Murcer, Clint Hurdle RC
1979 Topps: Don Sutton, Willie McCovey, Carlton Fisk AS
1981 Donruss: Pete Rose, Jim Palmer, Tom Seaver
    1981 Topps: Rollie Fingers
1982 Donruss: Joe Morgan, Jim Gantner
    1982 Fleer: Jim Rice
1982 Topps: Steve Carlton, Don Sutton, Rod Carew AS, Fred Lynn IA, Von Hayes RC
1983 Donruss: Julio Franco RC, Gary Carter, Nolan Ryan, Willie Stargell DK
1983 Fleer: George Brett, Howard Johnson RC
1983 Topps: Home Run Leaders (Reggie Jackson/Gorman Thomas/Dave Kingman), Alan Trammell
1984 Topps: Ozzie Smith AS, Home Run Leaders (Mike Schmidt/Jim Rice)
1985 Fleer: Cal Ripken Jr, Ryne Sandbert, Bill Hatcher/Shawon Dunston RC
1985 Topps: Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose

Scans of the better stuff to follow. Thanks again for running this, Bill!

    Scans as promised...

    Mangled 1983 Topps:
    image

1978 Topps Bobby Murcer - other than centering, a nice looking card
1979 Topps Don Sutton - too bad there's a print mark by his mouth, nice otherwise
1979 Topps Willie McCovey - so close on the centering
1979 Topps Carlton Fisk AS - again, close on the centering
    image

1981 Donruss Pete Rose - the only centered card in the pack, too bad they cut the top and left edges so poorly
1982 Donruss Joe Morgan - nice centering, I might submit this one someday
1983 Donruss Julio Franco RC - it's his rookie, but not worth submitting
1983 Donruss Nolan Ryan - t/b centering issues but may send in someday
    image

1983 Donruss Willie Stargell DK - I'm definitely sending this one in, has a shot at a 10, imo
1983 Fleer George Brett - slight rough cut on left edge, but might submit someday
1984 Topps Ozzie Smith AS - nice centering but tiny chipping on l/r edges, again - might submit someday
1985 Topps Pete Rose - nice centering, but touched bottom left corner and fisheye on his armpit
    image

1982 Donruss Jim Gantner - I already have a 10, but this will go into my raw collection

    Thanks,

  • Pretty good centering overall.

Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
  • Not too bad Craig. If by chance you send in the Stargell and get a 10, I am slowly putting together a complete set in PSA 10 only. The Ryan is not worth submitting because apperantly PSA is pretty tough on the 83 Donruss. Somehow Donruss managed to produce some decent quality cards that year.

Sweet! Anyone have any scans of their 77s?
  • hopefully mine will come tommorow!

I ripped all my pack besides the 77opc. I havn't decided if I am going to rip it or put it with my pack collection. All of the packs were in good condition. I didn't get anything special besides the Fleer Ripken rc but I had alot of fun opening all the packs. Are any of these cards worth getting graded? I also purchased a box of 90 UD and 90 Score Hockey. I have included the pics of those cards as well

That Ripken is definitly a 9 (OC). Nice scans! Now go rip that 77! image
  • If by chance that is just a bad scan and not whitening on the borders, the 85 Donruss Sandberg DK is a low pop card with only 8 PSA 9's and 2 10's. For some reason all the DK cards are low pops. Quite a few have no 10's and very few 9's.

Ya the ryan dk looks pretty good with little to no white around the border. I think it has a good shot at a 9 or 10

I would've said 8 or 9 with the top/bottom centering such as it is. Also, is that chipping on the bottom edge, just below the A in Sandberg? If so, it won't get better than an 8, possibly even a 7 considering the centering.

I carefully went through the cards today and here are the cards that I think have shots at a 9 or 10. I only pulled out cards of guys I have heard of. I really like the Andre Dawson I think I have a shot at a 10. Are any of these cards worth getting graded?

Got mine today, I'll rip after I finish the crown moulding project my wife told me needs to be done before her and the squids return from Florida tonght.
  • I think that 83 dawson is worth a shot. The 81 Carlton is nice also.

Anyone find it strange there is not SMR pricing for 77 OCP? Or am i missing something?

Got my box today...opened the first pack of 77 OPC, saving the 2nd for later.

First card (The one with the Wax Stain)...George Brett #170, centered 50/50 top/bottom and 70/30 L/R. Probably the best cut card in the pack, four sharp corners and only a little of the edge fuzz, although the wax stain sux, will be visiting my wifes nylons compartment later. Rest of the cards were commons that looked like they had been cut from the sheet with a butter knife

Didnt pull anything great but my best two cards are of my least favorite player. What can i say the 1984 cubs scared me for life! I dont remember 1982 topps having stickers but I think most of mine came from rack packs at KB Toys.

Tough to tell is the upper right chipping or a diry scanner just like mine?
  • If anybody gets Steve Garvey cards or Steve Yeager cards that will grade in the PSA 9-10 range and are willing to part with them, let me know.

The Ryan looks like and 8. T/B Centering.

I opened about 10 boxes looking for a sweet Ryan. Check the surface. That is one of the major problems of the 86 OPC's.

Stick the card in the freezer overnight then the gum should come off clean

Current obsession, all things Topps 1969 - 1972

  • Will PSA slab it with the gum still attached?

  • Got my cards today, will show scans after football. I pulled a 1985 Topps Clemens, 83 Fleer McGee and a 82 Topps Nolan Ryan. Centering very nice overall. My 80 pack seemed kind of tight, I don't think a 10 could have came out of it. The 77 OPC are very nice.

  • This was a fun rip and stroll back along memory lane. Overall I think I made out alright scoring a 78 Ryan that is probably PSA 8 worthy....... Here are the highlights.....

Justin, from the scan that 77 Rice looks AWFUL sharp! So does Pepe.
  • Man those 77's look sharp. Hope mine look the same. Actually I hope I can resist opening all my packs instead of saving one lot for my unopened wax display.

I think the Rice has a legit shot at a 10 as does the Pepe. Unfortunately the rest of the pack was all over the place on centering.
